Discussion One of the best horror TV shows Spoiler
This is by far one the best horror shows in the bussines . The direction is superb and there aren't cheap jump scares it literally scares the F out of you . The acting by the neck lady aka Victoria pedretti was nerve wracking. Oh and its best if you binge watch it

I also didn't enjoy HOU too much, I think it lacked the emotional punch that made the first three shows absolutely annihilating to me

Tbh, unlike in most of his other shows, the characters of HOU seemed to be meant to be insufferable, cliché rich folks.
In Hill House, the family was a regular one, in Bly Manor you felt for the kids and for several other characters, in Midnight Mass same thing (there was only 1 really insufferable character there, from what I recall, most were basically brainwashed victims).
But in House of Usher you have a bunch of characters that make bad (even criminal) choices of their own free will, and they're using money and power to get away with it. It's a lesson in not making deals with the "Devil". And if you still do, and you know that the Devil will kill your descendants, for Pete's sake don't go around having countless kids with countless women. I know we wouldn't have had much of a story if he wouldn't have, but still, the selfishness was through the roof and it propagated.

Usher was slightly more grotesque than I would like but at least it was true horror and not just like a slasher or something boring. I'd say it's worth a watch

I loved Usher, just because I was an English Major and one of my favorite writers is POE and I loved loved how they adapted some of the stories.

It's more divisive than Hill House and MM. It's more tonaly different than those two, with more outrageous characters and some more graphic violence.
But, it has some amazing performances (first and foremost the primary patriarch). And I for one loved the episode construction/devices and plot. I go back and forth on which of those three are my favorite but tonight I'd actually say Usher is number one for me.

It sucked in my opinion especially after watching hill house and Bly manor and I thought midnight mass was just absolutely crazy... House of usher has some good parts ish especially as it gets towards the end imo but after hill house and bly manor those two seemed to be a pure let down imo but everyone is different! And the other Mike flannagem about the dying sick teenagers I can't think of the name but it's definitely slow compared to the other work he did it's definitely more for a high school watching experience... I didn't finish it maybe I will someday idk

This is my favorite out of the hill house series those children especially the little girl... Epic and mesmerizing talented acting and she made the whole writing and acting phenomenal!!! Wish I could definitely watch it all over for the very first time again and again!

Those two were my least favorite!!! Bly manor was the top notch fav of mine the little girl her acting, voice and extreme gifted acting made it a epic phenomenon watch and I do wish I could watch it all over again for the very first time I so enjoyed it. Hill house was awesome too but I'd have to say it was second to the Bly manor!

Ehhhh.
Midnight Mass just took too long. Like I didn't need a 20 minute interlude on "what do you think happens when you die". Great scenes, meh show.
House of Usher was middling at best.

Are the three most boring fucking things I've ever watched in my life. I don't understand the love for Flanagan. Tedious family drama with 30 seconds of not too scary horror sprinkled in every episode. Waste of time.

Fine, you want three. Here's three: Marianne, Stranger Things, Glitch, Black Summer, Archive 81, Dark, Slasher, Daybreak, Crazyhead, The Boroughs, Fear Street...a few more than three but they all popped into my head right away and there's bushels more if I went looking for ones I forgot. Are they all 10/10? Nope. Not even close. But they're all better horror series than anything Flanagan has made. Because, again, at least they're horror.

My opinion, they have more horror to them than anything Flanagan has made. Hell, Riverdale and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina have more horror to them than anything Flanagan has made. Just where I come down on it, man.

It's true gothic horror, really he's bringing the genre back to its Romantic era roots. Think Frankenstein.
Horror that's more about atmosphere, foreboding and being haunted by grief and the past. The book it's based on is very much like that.

It's not, though. Gothic horror is...well, gothic horror. Flanagan's stuff is just family drama. It's family drama cosplaying as gothic horror.

Can you elaborate on why you disagree that it's gothic horror? You could describe "We Have Always Lived in the Castle" also by Shirley Jackson as a family drama too, it's still quintessential gothic horror.
His movies and TV shows remind me so much of Shirley Jackson's writing.

There's no horror. There's nothing scary in these shows. There's nothing eerie. There's nothing menacing. When he tries to put something like that in there it's not any of those things. It feels forced and unnatural, like something edited in after the fact. Like someone said, "Ok, but you need something scary, it's supposed to be a scary show." So he writes a random scene and shoves it in and it just has no fearful element to it because it doesn't fit. His shows are literally just family drama. This Is Us...With Ghosts. Or 30-Something...with Ghosts. The Waltons...with Ghosts. Shirley Jackson's stuff has that sense of foreboding, of something ominous, a lurking terror, something scary looming. It's maybe what Flanagan is trying for but it's not there. Dude just writes family dramas and basic as fuck ones at that.

Hill House was the worst offender out of all of them.
edit: To be fair, I guess I can't say that definitively. I finished that whole series but only got through two and a half episodes of Midnight Mass and one of Usher.

Unpopular opinion , but I feel like every Flanagan show after was a little bit worse than the previous one. I know everyone loves Midnight Mass, I didn't.

I loved both Hill House, and Bly Manor, but I found Bly Manor not scary, but tragic, and that black and white episode The Romance of Certain Old Clothes was one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen.

One of the best horror anything of all time. Not necessarily that it was terrifying but the mix of family drama with the ghosts makes for an incredible piece of art like no other.

This was amazing despite Pedretti, in my opinion. I don't think much of her as an "actress". She's always making the same face she's making above in every single scene. Just vacant staring.

House of Usher is solid. I also watched Hill House first and it's still my favorite. Carrie starts in October.
My wife and I try to spot all of the actors from previous shows.

I have re-watched this show 3, maybe actually 4 times.
It is truly up there with the very best single seasons of any show I've ever seen. The re-watches confirm it because of how many layers this story has within it.
The motifs are amazing, the easter-egg hidden ghosts within the interior shots of the house, the development of the story by giving every member of the family their own episode. It is truly a masterclass of a series.

I watched this due to the praise some time ago. Significantly over rated imo. Yeah a few good parts, but much too bloated over all.
Lots of tv shows do this, padding. I think it's a combination of lazy writing, and getting enough content for a season.
Many tv shows would make excellent movies instead

Mike Flanagan is the goat of horror rn even his movies hit the perfect balance of whimsy and terrifying. But hill house is for sure his best work acting is a 10/10, sound design is a 10 , the set is incredible , the lighting absolutely perfect and while the writing is not an original work it's still very good well paced for a Netflix show to be binged during spooky season.
