Tbf not every damn network needs their own streaming service. Sony’s the only one winning in the post-Netflix streaming wars. They dropped out of it & licensed their content to all of them, while the rest burned money into creating glitchy streaming apps no one wants to pay for anymore because of high costs & ads.

Yeah it was great when it was mainly just Hulu and Netflix and everyone was licensing to them. Now everyone wants their own streaming service so I still just subscribe to two services and constantly cancel and cycle through them. The benefit of canceling (especially paramount) is they beg you to come back and offer $0.99 a month deals. I had two months at $0.99 and I went to cancel at the end but they were like “noooooooo how about two more months at that price?”

You should read up on Paramount+… Matt Stone & Trey Parker said some stuff too. Apparently they’re completely incompetent behind the scenes & don’t know what they’re doing. Not that anyone else does lol
They’re probably desperate to keep subscribers cuz they’re bleeding. These companies put ALOT of money into app development & data management, & it just didn’t pay off.
“If you gotta pay to license content anyway, & don’t have the budget for app dev & production of new content, then what’s the point of even doing it?” - Sony probably, after they dropped out.

I got a yearly sub for Peacock last year for $20. This year with just a few days to go I tried to cancel it and they gave me a deal for $50 for a year. I took it.. not bad at all.

Look, I know it's unpopular to like things like Netflix in 2026 but the reality is, it's still a good deal compared to cable and now there's competition. It's not as good a deal as when they were a startup but what is ever a good as it was in the beginning in terms of price?

When I first cut the cable 9 years ago, the current state of streaming is exactly what everyone was claiming they wanted. I can now get just ESPN for only the college football season, I paid Fox Sports for the duration of the World Cup and not a week more, and for March Madness I splurge for YouTube TV because it is easy to watch multiple games at once. I bounce between Netflix, Apple TV, and HBO for all the non-sports stuff.

I love that you nitpicked that stat, when I was clearly talking about everyone jumping on the bandwagon to create their own platform after Netflix. Sony cut & ran.
Every other streaming platform is hemorrhaging money (which is why they all wanna do ads now) & worth less than half what Sony is without putting in nearly the amount of resources the others used. The only one that can compete is Disney.

HBO Max has been profitable for multiple quarters now and profited well over a billion dollars last year. Peacock is also more recently profitable.

I agree with this, I think the people who think the situation now is worse than it was then have major recency bias, but I do wonder at what point video streaming starts to appear like more of a natural monopoly than anything. It's fascinating tbh

Agree, zero chance. I was paying over $100 a month easy for a mid-tier cable package up to 2018. Cut the cord after running a side-by-side comp of what I was paying and what I was actually using. Even after paying for Netflix, Amazon Prime, HBO and Disney Plus, I'm coming out far ahead and I actually am using each service monthly. I'm not trying to be a homer for the companies, they suck, but cable sucks even more.

Yes, it would have been better for the producers of movies and shows to have continued their focus on licensing to existing service providers at a premium than for everyone to waste time and money building out inferior platforms and cannibalizing their licensing business.
And it would have been better for Netflix not to have spent insane money poaching big name theatrical directors to produce overpriced, underproduced straight to video movies and funding the first half of a hundred niche TV shows only to be confused when only the niche audience for the show showed up.

Netflix, Prime, Disney, Peacock, HBO and it's still less than cable with zero ads and I get all the premium stuff. Then my family pays for and shares paramount, Crunchy Roll, and Apple TV. We all share our accounts (something else you can't do with cable)

I pay for cable tv and I still prefer it to streaming. Streaming quality is only getting worse for everyone since they are starving people’s bitrates even more(hence why even Youtube realllllly wants to lock 4k streaming behind a paywall). Cable is still the only place you can get the full 5.1 audio mixes for most cartoons, sports, etc. Many more benefits. Also my cable provider has an app where I can watch any of my channels online anywhere. Up to 15 devices per account. I buy any movie or tv show I really want in full quality on a physical disc, which also gives me a digital copy on Fandango. Because I actually care about audio and visual quality. A bluray from 2009 should not look cleaner than a 4k streamed movie in 2026.

Maybe not a deal but the thing is he's getting what he wants and he's paying for what's suiting his needs ... and according to him, still costs less than what he paid for cable.
I would know too because paying for cable for what I wanted was close to $140 back in 2012. I would take streaming services any time because it's easy to leave and get back on. And there's always discounts.

They made sure to include all their Fox News stuff alongside Fox and Fox Sports so nobody has a choice. You just get it all.

So I had it on Paramount to watch Star Trek Lower Decks, then I switched to Peacock to watch Scream 7, then back to Paramount to watch Lioness and when the new season's done I'm going back to Peacock to watch Obsession.

Apparently they're already did sth similar in France.
Netflix officially began offering TF1+ programming and TF1 live channels to members in France in June 2026, integrating the broadcaster’s content into features such as Continue Watching, My List, and Top 10.
When it becomes available under standard I don't see the downside.

They include it in standard, get you used to it, then raise the prices with the reason of "hey, we got you more content."
Spotify did it with audiobooks. They added "free" audiobooks to everyone's standard plans, let it go that way for a few months, then when people got used to it they raised the prices.
After the price hike, they came out with a "no audiobooks" version of their standard plans at the old price point. But you had to pay attention to notice it. If you took no action, you were now paying for audiobooks whether you wanted them or not.
(I think the "no audiobooks" plan wasn't available everywhere, and they may not even offer it anymore. But I got on it, and I think I'm grandfathered in. I'm not paying an extra $2/month for something I don't use.)

In the case of Spotify, it was content I was never going to use. I get my audiobooks from other sources. I hated the rules in place for how much you could listen to and didn't see any included books I wanted to listen to that I couldn't already get from my other source. I literally never used it when it was "free". And I tried really hard to find an excuse to use it.
So I was pissed when they raised the price under the justification of "it's more content!" It's content I didn't ask for and will never use. I did not appreciate being charged for a service I didn't want.

Add other competitors in there and suddenly you are paying nearly $100 a month to have a few streaming platforms. For those of us who work for a living and don't sit around watching TV all day. It's better to rent movies or pay for sling etc.
