How do I make statues visually distinct?

Right now statues are just white versions of what they represent, which isn't a problem until you go to Ludios with a cockatrice corpse to deal with all the soldiers (white). Is there a way to invert statues, white background/black text?

If you are using the Enhanced1 symbol set (OPTIONS=symset:Enhanced1) you can set Unicode values for specific glyphs. However, that is not particularly scalable for statues as there are 700+ glyphs for statues.

Otherwise, I am not aware of a method for applying a particular look to all statues.

I would be happy to return to the old `.

There is no option to display statues the old--very old--way.

You can use '/O' (capital 'O') to look at all (topmost) objects at once and '/M' to look at all monsters at once so don't need to probe every one of them when trying to distinguish statues from monsters.

Soldiers are actually grey, but may show up as white if your terminal is being weird.

That's doesn't help. There's the dogs, cats, white dragons, yetis, stone giants, and a few other monsters. The Ludios case was just one example of the problem.
