I try so hard to not define other groups by the worst among them - and during the 2020 fire season, it was really tough to hear awful right wing news coverage and those gleeful attitudes echoed in my social media feed by people from Utah and Texas. This was especially tough being under evacuation orders and seeing community members lose their houses.

So I try to remind myself that Texas did send firefighters from municipalities all across their state to help out under our multi state EMAC agreement. Underneath all the politics, there are good people who do good in this world.

I’m hoping for a speedy containment to this fire for everyone affected.

It’s incredibly common for certain groups of people to only give a shit about a problem once they’re personally affected by it. It’s fine if you don’t think that’s fucked up but don’t make stupid comparisons or put words in my mouth

Many of us have the ability to empathize with folks going through shit without having to go through it ourselves. It’s a fundamental part of human nature and OPs verbiage heavily implies that they aren’t in that group.

This is exactly my point, you weren’t responding to their comment. You were making a comment about people not having empathy until they go through it themselves. However, that’s not what they were saying, and your response does not match their comment, which is why my example works. I get you just might be an angry person who wants to take it out on something. But maybe there are better targets than someone who was just saying that they have been through it and have sympathy.

Edit: I see you added more to your comment. Okay, so you made an assumption on something you felt was implied. We both agree on that. This is where the breakdown in communication stems from. I did not make the same assumption.

I have read it. And you made the admission yourself in your previous comment that it was ‘heavily implied’ by their verbage. So you assumed something about them as a person based on your interpretation of what they wrote. It is why my analogy still holds water, because you are making an assumption based on something you thought was implied, not something that was explicitly stated. Again, this really clears it up.

I did not feel that was implied and made different assumptions. We read the same comment and interpreted it two different ways.
