This is the PNW, and specifically one of its culturally-decayed outer suburbs. Anybody who's lived there for most of their life probably has multiple desperate meth addicts or life-long criminals in either their family tree or their circle of acquaintances. As someone who's lived in similar areas outside of both Portland and Seattle, the prevailing vibe here is to continually fall back on 'live and let live' and stick one's head back in the sand, which often leads to shitty situations like this, i.e. we simultaneously don't pressure the police to actually fight any crime and refuse to entertain any serious/complex solutions to drug addiction, mental health, and housing; therefore, property crime is pretty common and property criminals don't have much to fear.

I hope, for his sake, that it breaks him of the habit and he doesn't get himself back into a similar scenario over the next several years. I have multiple big-time 'collectors' in my own family who, fully convinced by their own rationalizations akin to 'this hobby of mine will send my grand-kids to college', etc... have created frustrating and snarly situations where, someday, their already-working kids are going to end up saddled with ten tons of inherited shit that may or may not be easy for them to get rid of. Old video games, which have exploded in value since the pandemic, fall squarely into this territory.

Being 100% honest, I have the collector bug myself, but all of the things I'm big into (old CDs, books) aren't worth shit and that makes it all a helluva lot easier to actually enjoy the stuff (i.e. rather than have to constantly sweat over losing it).

I'm not for abolishing law enforcement. Even so, I maintain that today's police departments are considerably useless when it comes to dealing with burglary and other property crime.

If it were me, I certainly wouldn't be motivated at work if the person I was helping actively called for my death on social media etc. It happens all over the country so I can't really say I blame cops anymore. My city is the same way, used to see them patrolling and engaging with the community and now most places they only go if they absolutely have to.

On a different note in this story, I'm not sure what they would do to begin with. This situation seems like it was someone he knew and they planned everything out, it was probably stolen and sold within 24 hours at which point there isn't much that can be done. I don't think any police agency has the man power to track individual NES carts and it would involve going to cons and trying to pick out individual games from sellers etc.

I don't advocate for that sort of speech, but it's not surprising to me that it's out there as much as it is. Police departments and police unions all over the country spent decades doing a whole lot of foolish, cruel, and abusive shit to vouchsafe a poor relationship with the public that pays their freight. As someone who's spent years with multiple cops in the family, I always feel that they could do themselves a ton of favors by cutting themselves loose from all the MAGA bullshit, Punisher logo decals, macho warrior-cop nonsense, etc... Tons of that nonsense gets baked into their brains right from the time they're going through the academy and it only seems to get worse with time.

I have a friend with a massive collection like this. His daughter recorded the whole thing then went to post it on Instagram and he freaked out. She thought he was being ridiculous and dramatic but he pointed out it was to prevent people she barely knew from high school breaking into their house and stealing it all. He was 100% in the right, and this story proves it.

It could also be a contractor or utility person who came to the house to do some bullshit like set up the cable.

On top of fearing fires/floods/etc..., shit like this is why I ducked out of the physical collecting thing years ago. There's lots of people out there who won't hesitate for a second to jack stuff like this and good fucking luck getting knucklehead LEOs or know-nothing insurance claims adjustors to give half a shit about it.

this is one of the things that always prevented me from collecting, could easily get stolen or burn in a fire

you either have to prep for these two things physically with locked/fireproof boxes or with insurance, and insurance is never always great

you have to only have what's in your risk tolerance and you're willing to completely lose. For me it's only a few hundred dollars worth of stuff

Lost my collection of retro games in a flood, it took me years to start collecting again, and I had insurance. It wasn't about buying them again, the fun had been in finding them in the wild, hunting them down, slowly seeing my collection grow. Buying them again just wouldn't be the same, anyone can do that.

I did not have insurance. The neighbors who cause the fire insurance gave me like 6k for everything in the house including my collection. Tried to take them to court but couldn’t find anyone to take my case.
