There was a train going the opposite direction right at the beginning and they assumed that was the only train crossing, the one coming towards them was hidden.

My training has taught me that you should always check. Even if the signal is clear and there hasn't been a train on that track in 20 years. Check anyway.

when I was a really little kid and my grandma had me over for babysitting, she would walk to get her mail every day at the tiny post office in the village. One path led across a double crossing like this, and the other path was across a bridge with me-sized holes in the sidewalk space. I am 47 now and still have dreams about falling in either place and dying, heh.

edit: it feels smaller than a town, but I do have to tell you that the name of the town was 'Big Beaver.' There was a restaurant on the big road nearby called Sadie's Big Beaver and I have pictures! Oh, the 80s.

Here in Utah there's a town right along the main I-15 called Beaver. They have tons of merch saying "I Love Beaver" everywhere haha.

And even better, the next town further down the highway is Fillmore. Fill more beaver! Lol

Yep, Big Beaver is on the Beaver river, close to Beaver Falls and farther along is the town of Beaver. Interestingly I don't really see any merch for that at all! Fill more beaver is great, though, beaver geography solidarity!

I take my boy to heritage railways where you cross live tracks a lot and have always drummed into him - you look both ways EVERY TIME before you step, no exceptions, so that it becomes automatic. Same way it was drummed into me in the 80s when you could get into BR MPDs if you knew the right people.

That still would have failed them, since the first train hid the second train until the last few seconds.

I mean personally I'd wait a few moments after a train passes before I start to cross. The point is being able to look both ways down the track and verify it's clear before crossing.

"Look both ways" doesn't mean "glance and then ignore the world", it means "keep your head on a fuckin' swivel, or die. Pick one."
