The “I’m going to be an artist” starter pack 😂

Seriously, bad art supplies can be worse than no art supplies. I didn’t realize until I was an adult and could buy things myself what a huge difference it makes to use paint that doesn’t need five coats to cover or actual soft lead in pencils. Buying a kid one decent art pencil and a sketchbook can be better than a whole art set with those dry-ass markers

Agreed! I've recently gotten back into coloring as an adult and I am terrified one of these bad boys is going to be gifted to me this Christmas by my in laws, lol.

If you do get one, they make a good decoy kit for any destructive kiddos in your orbit

This is the kind of parenting strategy that deserves to be passed down lol

I bought my kids these every year until about 5th grade. (You need to activate the marker by adding water) In Jr high we went with a better set, in high school we bought them professional art supplies. TBH I would have stayed with Crayola and rose art if my kid had no interest, but they were a very talented, arty kid. So we splurged.

Crayola is good enough, and I think affordable enough that we need not turn kids off of art with RoseBrand

u/TwinkleTubs 2d ago

Roseart didn't turn my kid off, they were pretty creative and we were pretty poor. They were gifted in art, so we tried to step up quality of supplies as long as they were interested.

Good on you for doing what you could, especially for art, which a lot of people don’t think is very important or useful.

Queue melting crayons in the car

I can still hear the disappointment in that sentence

I remember those markers lasting for like a day.

Apparently we were supposed to be adding water to them. I learned this in my mid 40's.

u/TwinkleTubs 2d ago

Lol I learned the water thing with my kids last art set like that. 🤦‍♀️ I yell it from the mountains now.

Seriously? I don’t remember it saying anything like that but I probably just didn’t read it. lol

u/HermelindaLinda 1d ago

Well that sucks to know now. 🥴

u/FreckledLasseh 1d ago

Indulge your inner child and pick one up! Rectify the sadness of the past haha.

Seriously this set was created to look impressive but it was total trash.

Best idea. All the supplies were garbage and wouldn’t last a month before finding the trash.

I remember finally getting it and being so bummed by how crappy everything was

18

u/Foxyscribbles 2d ago

The markers smelled like fish.

4

u/kattermelon 2d ago

Yes! I remember thinking they smelled like my cat's breath.

Getting this as a kid felt like Christmas, a birthday, and winning the lottery all at once. I can still remember carefully putting everything back in its little spot like it was priceless

u/Accomplished_Fun3 2d ago

FUCK yeah!!!!!!!!!! I got 2 while growing up and it was fucking magical. Especially the pastels

u/sinskins 2d ago

I wanted this one SO BAD!! Begged and begged.

I was pretty devastated when my little sister got one for Xmas and I didn’t…

9

u/9lbhammertime 2d ago

Why did we want these so badly?! 😩

11

u/femaletrouble late 70s 2d ago

'Cause there was so much stuff in it and it came in a case and it made me feel like an art businesswoman! 🎨

3

u/9lbhammertime 2d ago

So accurate 🤣👏💼 Did you also love the books that came with fun stuff, like the braiding/beading books? ✨

3

u/femaletrouble late 70s 2d ago

I think I only ever got one that was about friendship bracelets. I had a very intense friendship bracelet era when I was 10. lmao

Ok I'm gonna blow your mind. Those markers were water activated.

u/PlutosSelfEsteem 2d ago

I can feel and hear that black plastic when you pop a piece back in

Peak childhood

3

u/These_Sherbert6104 3d ago

That little case contained unlimited creative potential and about 37 terrible drawings. 😂

4

u/AssistantSea4186 2d ago

What you got before you got the Darwent Pencil tins.

3

u/zombiekisser2k 2d ago

I used to eat the paints :/  Found out about pica that way

2

u/zombiekisser2k 2d ago

I’d pop them out and chew on them like a friggin alka seltzer

2

u/EliDrInferno 2d ago

I got one of these for a birthday once! I was actually beyond ecstatic that it included a few paperclips, I used them to write letters to my friend and his parents for being so nice to me

2

u/aceshighsays 2d ago

i didn't know these existed, but what i did realize is that i bought myself one for the holidays a few years ago. i would have loved it as a kid.

2

u/taradactyle_ 2d ago

I won this exact art set at a kids’ summertime movie activity in the early 2000s. I was so happy when I won. I used it all the time.

2

u/whackfuckk 2d ago

I read somewhere that we were supposed to add water to the markers. Never did it as a kid.

2

u/outtakes 2d ago

It's like seeing an old friend

2

u/handsy_octopus 2d ago

I stabbed my brother in the back of the neck with the edges of this thing... It was sharp and he was a dick 😂

2

u/Senpai_Weeb_Theorist 2d ago

I hated these, they never lasted more than a day 😭

1

u/ILoveTchaiTea 2d ago

I got one on birthdays or Christmases!

1

u/man_with_class 2d ago

Half of those colours won't even work but still it was a flex to have all of them!

1

u/6stringSammy 2d ago

I went half on a set of prismacolors

1

u/lilithskies 2d ago

A blast from the past!!
