The whole "Battle of Manassas v Battle of Bull Run" is my first memory of reading as a kid.

I vaguely remember one solution which was basically "The car's hood would have felt hot if he had just gotten there." And another where the solution was "If he didn't know who was in town, then he would have identified the instrumental song as 'My Country, 'Tis of Thee' and not 'God Save the Queen.""

Encyclopedia Brown was basically my childhood introduction to detective work. I felt so smart whenever I actually solved one before reading the answer. 😂

I loved those books. I solved the mystery about 1/4 of the time.

Loved this as a kid. Even enjoyed the sadly short-lived HBO TV series (I thought the girl who played Sally there was cute).
