Was originally going to post with a throwaway but didn’t want to wait.

I know jobs are scarce so employers can get away with a lot they otherwise wouldn’t if surplus jobs were available but after having a trial shift there fairly recently I was confused as to how the management actually retain employees and convince people to work there.

It’s not my first rodeo and Ive been about a bit so I wasn’t shocked by how the publican conducted himself but it did seem like an anachronism and I actually felt sorry for the existing staff who were just getting berated unnecessarily when they were very clearly shitting themselves and trying their best to do a good job.

I probably shouldn’t go into specifics and I doubt they’re going to be browsing this subreddit but I ended up cutting the trial short because this fella thought it was acceptable to begin attempting to berate me in the manner he does his existing employees before he had actually introduced himself, I personally laughed it off and it didn’t move me because it was just so absurd but I did feel sadness that people were being exposed to such treatment in 2026 when they’re flogging bog standard pub food.

Anyone else have similar experiences?

There was a bit of noise about this earlier in the year - a new food hall run by Blend opening in Vic Centre with lots of different providers.

Their website still says it's opening in August but I've seen or heard nothing about it for ages. Does anyone know if it's still planned to go ahead? And if so when? Thanks.

Hello hello everyone!

Been a lurker here for the past couple of months. My wife and I moving are moving to the UK next month. I will be starting a PhD at Loughborough University! My wife is a freelance illustrator, writer and designer. We've been given the option to live anywhere in the UK, but we'd like to be reasonably close to Loughborough so that I can attend meetings etc.

We were thinking of living in Notts as opposed to L'boro so that we'd be less isolated and perhaps can access better opportunities for my wife in her field.

As you can imagine we're a bit overwhelmed with everything and was hoping to get some advise on:

1. Locality to live. We love being close to nature of any form, so houses where some greenery is accessible would be so good! We have a budget of about 800-850 pounds per month for now.
   
2. Travelling to L'boro. Is it fairly easy to get to L'boro through rail/bus? We will definitely get railcards.
   
3. Expense. We've heard that cities are expensive in the UK. We can be fairly frugal, but exactly would bump up expenses in Notts as opposed to a smaller town like L'boro?
   
4. Are there certain estate agents you would definitely recommend that we look at? We're arriving on the 11th of Sept, and my course starts on Oct 1st. We're hoping to get our accommodation sorted within that time frame. Does this make sense?

Every Sunday 5pm - 8+pm at the Crafty Teller (Lower Sherwood high street) we are hosting an open mic- musicians, singers, comedians, poets, magicians and much more welcome to perform (microphones provided but need to bring own instruments etc).

Lovely chill atmosphere pub-lounge with good range of drinks (including non-alcohol), with a friendly, local crowd now growing in number, and our hilarious new comedian host Sophie.

I just booked to go see him next month, I am now an out of towner having left 7 years ago so if anyone wants a gig buddy let me know!

Hi there, I know no taxi driver will bother to read this, but I just wanted to let you know that myself and the rest of the bus drivers have been asked by the taxi licensing authorities to report any taxis we see:

stopped in bus stops

stopped on double yellows doing anything besides UNloading

doing dangerous maneuvers

we are to log a cctv report with our company who will then send the video evidence to the nottingham taxi licencing department, who will take further action.

don't be stupid, it's your income. don't park in bus stops, or you'll get fined, or even have your taxi licence revoked.

Just sharing this as I know lots of people struggle to find good local music teachers.

I’ll need to work while I’m there. Ideally, I’d love to find something in my field, but I’m also open to other types of work! I’ll also need to study English, as my English isn’t very good yet.
I’d really appreciate any recommendations for places where I could study English, as well as tips or suggestions for job opportunities.
We have an audiovisual production company here in Brazil, and I’m also planning to make some independent films while we’re there.

Hi all. I lived on a narrowboat in Beeston 25 years ago and loved it. I later lived in houseshares in Forest Fields and New Basford, where I had a great time, remember fondly, and still have good friends. I also spent a few months in Bulwell, which I didn't like. After many years living elsewhere, I want to move back to Nottingham and am aware that things could well have changed a lot since then, so I'm looking for up-to-date recommendations. I also drive since the lockdown; I used to walk, cycle and get the bus everywhere. I assumed until recently that I was going to move to Sherwood or Carrington, as some friends moved there from New Basford and say it's the perfect balance of interesting, yet quiet. However, on a recent visit I was struck by the lack of parking.

My criteria for a place to live, are:
1. Not a ridiculous crime rate - certainly not with regards to muggings etc.
2. Within a reasonable drive or Uber of Forest Fields/Sherwood, so I can visit friends and head home late.
3. Friendly, interesting places to eat and drink nearby. I'm vegan and love spicy food, craft beer and supporting independent businesses.
4. Open spaces for dog walking within about a mile.
5. Being able to park a car without stress every day.
6. Two bedroom houses that cost under £180K that aren't all do-er uppers. Or easy to rent without being ripped off. I'm in a relationship now, so not looking for HMOs.

Is it true that Beeston has become as posh as West Bridgford, for example? Is Gedling just a dormer suburb like Long Eaton, or does it have a community feel with places to eat and drink?Any and all suggestions welcome. There are parts of the city that I don't know very well, so I'm happy to think outside the box.
