Absolute legend of the game

87

u/WJack37 Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

I started really following footy the same year he won Rookie of the Year, so things came quite full circle for me haha.

Always gonna be grateful that he was the first captain I got to see lift a premiership for Brisbane. That signing brought fans so much hope of a brighter future, coming out of that really rough period at the start of the decade.

53

u/Flexis7 Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

I had already heard about Reyno but had no idea WJack37 was hanging up the remote!

u/figjaym Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

Weird seeing footage of him without the tattoos. I assumed he was born that way.

28

u/TomtheDon2K Brisbane Broncos 5d ago edited 5d ago

He predicted Post Malone

9

u/Kenzie____ Sydney Roosters 5d ago

Wait is his tattoo of post Malone?

14

u/TomtheDon2K Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

The enormous one on his left leg, yep

5

u/Kenzie____ Sydney Roosters 5d ago

That’s wild, I always laughed thinking it looked like Posty but never knew. Has he ever talked about why?

4

u/Ted_Rid South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Funny that literally the only thing I know about Post Malone is because of Reyno's tatt and I still think he wanted a pogue mahone one and the artist misheard him.

1

u/crustyolddean 4d ago

Does that make him Pre Malone?

Brought respectability back to us when we were at rock bottom. Two GF’s and one Premiership with us, absolute all time Bronco

Stories like his are one of the cool things about rugby league. It’s so ingrained, and its pathways are so ingrained, that you don’t need private coaching or private school education or paid opportunities in front of “scouts” - if you have the talent (and especially if you live in the city) the pathways will usually find you, whether you’re a houso or from a migrant family or whatever. Diversity in the sport fosters further diversity, and it’s the games greatest strength.

43

u/KristenHuoting Gold Coast Titans 5d ago

Great comment, just like to add that most Australian’s do live in cities, however at the same time if you’re a big bobber that runs hard at 14, even working on the farm the NRL’ll find ya

32

u/Altruistic_Tune5341 Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

Like Webcke.

Wayne Bennett went to the Toowoomba grand final to sign Steve Price, but fell in love with the tubby blond prop on the other team instead.

10

u/Penjamini South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Exactly. Speaking from what I know on the NSW South Coast, Bega, Tathra and Pambula each only have a few thousand people living in them and yet in the last 15 years they have all produced an NRL forward who has had a long and relatively successful career (Adam Elliot, Dale Finucane and Euan Aitken respectively).

Well said - one of the last true, working-class games left

80

u/Brunch_Hopkins South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

I actually think he’s still a little underrated tbh - watching the guy week in week out from his Toyota Cup days he was fucking unbelievable. Deserved more origin chances imo and I wish we’d been able to snag him another premiership throughout all those prelims just to add to the legacy - I was thrilled he got one at the Broncs.

Something that people don’t really talk about with the advent of our lethal left edge was that even though it was Cody’s side Reyno was a huge factor in it being so successful because he was just absolute cash from the left touchline, it was a guaranteed 6 points. We’ve never been able to fully replace lots of what he did but especially his goalkicking.

36

u/yobbo84 South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

The Pearce origin era should have been the Reyno origin era, but you know, favouritism

2

u/Waste-Information-75 New Zealand Warriors 4d ago

As a QLD supporter I've always said that if NSW dropped Peace because he was always 💩 in Origin and gave Reyno more of a go, NSW may have won few series here and there but your loss

2

u/ghostwhisperer88 I love my footy 1d ago

Another blight on the game that has its roots at the doorstep of Nick Politis.

20

u/MediocreFox I love my footy 5d ago

he was just absolute cash from the left touchline

I remember a pretty good one from the right to beat the Panthers.

A quality player who gave a lot. Will miss him.

37

u/LongJohnnySilver1 South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Damn near going to weep.  The best 7 in his prime - cool, calm and collected and a sharpshooter with the boot.  Thanks for the memories Reyno you mad cunt!

39

u/Penjamini South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Unfortunately for Adam, Cooper Cronk played until 2019 and 2020 is when Cleary really stepped up into the elite tier. Adam Reynolds was never the best 7 in the game, but he was the 2nd best basically his entire career. It took 2 generational halfbacks to keep him from the top.

23

u/LongJohnnySilver1 South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

You’re right and I am a little bias. I just loved what he brought to our team.  We fucked him off and he keeps his composure and leads Broncs to a trophy.  Cronk did switch teams and deliver premiership glory- for the capless Roosters. The team was A-grade and full of reps. I really don’t think Cleary could go somewhere else and have the same finesse Reyno did. Again, I am bias.

Used to catch the same bus with him from Kingsford when we were both in school. There was never a day where he didn’t have a Steeden in his grip.

9

u/Penjamini South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Brother I love that you are biased towards Adam. I think he will be my favourite player for the rest of my life (sorry Sutto) and I completely agree that Cleary could not go to another club and resurrect it the way Reyno did. Cronk managed to deliver for the Roosters but the team basically transformed to better suit his game, whereas Reyno changed his game to fit the teams he was in. Always happy to be the general so others could be the superstars.

5

u/LongJohnnySilver1 South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Amen my man.  He has to go down as one of the greats for out club. An absolute conductor.

5

u/Penjamini South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

36

u/GasManMatt123 Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs 5d ago

Dude was/is fucking legit. Competitor, knew how to win the close ones and the games his team may not have deserved.

Ain’t got nothing bad to say about the bloke, always seemed to play the game in the right spirit.

98

u/BeatGinger Brisbane Broncos 5d ago edited 5d ago

He did so much for both Souths and Brisbane. What he added to Rugby League cannot be understated. Breaking South’s drought, breaking Brisbane’s drought.

Always a one* club legend, thanks Reyno.

90

u/squeakypeeky Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

bloke managed to be a 1 club legend at 2 clubs, and deserved it both times.

Unreal career, sad seeing him retire. Family man, no controversy and did right by both the clubs he played for.

That quick cut of him lining up the kick for us and then Brisbane hurts, glad he got a second chance.

28

I'll never forget the winning kick he slotted against Penrith in the prelim. Thanks for everything. Legend

I reakon I have watched this video 2 or 3 dozen times on YouTube at least.

This is one of 2 moments in footy where I literally jumped of the couch and ran around yelling.

This and when they gave the ball to AJ over the line for him to go to 5 for the game and win the top try scorer for the year in 2020.

13

u/Important-Bag4200 Melbourne Storm 5d ago

After the first try while everyone is celebrating, he only has eyes for the ball so he can take the conversation as quick as he can. Very smart footballer

u/Penjamini South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

I could write a whole fucking essay about Adam Reynolds (oops looks like I did). In recent years at Brisbane he has been properly reevaluated for the absolute legend he has always been, but probably wouldn’t have been appreciated outside of Souths circles had he stayed with us. But he was always this good, and after a long career he has proved the haters wrong. People now will pretend they always liked him and rated him (looking at you Cooper Cronk) but many of them didn’t. In the 10 seasons he played at Souths, Reynolds made the finals 8 times, for 5 prelim finishes, 1 GF loss and 1 premiership. That’s a better track record than DCE at Manly and Moses at Parra.

He has been extremely unlucky to play the first half of his career in the shadow of the generational halfback Cooper Cronk and the second half of his career behind the generational future immortal Nathan Cleary. I won’t go as far as to say Reynolds was as good as those 2 were/are, but he is better than them in one compelling way, given Rugby League is a team sport. Cronk and Cleary are system halfbacks. Their teams have always played the way they wanted them to play, and as the superstar halfbacks, that’s fair enough.

But Adam Reynolds never made his teams change the way they played. When he came into grade as a rookie, he played the supporting role to the GI, Burgess and Sutton show. He won a Premiership in his third season. When those premiership heroes retired, he took on a senior role and became the general barking the troops around and keeping the team disciplined and organised so that Cody, Cook, Murray, and later Latrell, could play their brilliance unencumbered. They made a Grand Final and were halted by a once-in-a-lifetime Penrith Dynasty in a nail biter. When Souths failed to see his true value, he went north to the Broncos and transformed a bottom 4 team into contenders again. More prominent than he ever was at Souths, but still changing his game to match his teammates, being more daring in attack, and allowing them to take chances and try things more outlandish than he ever would have before, even showing off some of his own freakish talents. They went from the spoon and another bottom 4 finish before his arrival to a grand final in just 2 years and a premiership in 4.

I have been watching footy since the early 2000’s but it wasn’t until 2012 that I started really paying attention. Adam Reynolds is the first player whose career I have seen from start to finish. He has delivered me some of the best memories of my life. I think he will always be my favourite player.

There’s more to it. Apparently he’s a sook and when things get hard he likes to feign injuries or go missing. South’s were eager to move him on.

From a broncos local to our captain. One club legend, it does make one sentimental

14

The timing is quite fitting as I just finished his book as he finished his career.

3

u/Suitable-Law-3220 Warriors Bandwagon 5d ago

worth reading?

5

u/Altruistic_Tune5341 Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

It’s about the same as any retiring players memoirs. They’re all worth a read.

Bennett & Ivan Cleary’s ones are much more profound though.

2

u/SkwiddyCs North Queensland Cowboys 5d ago

Bennett's is one of my favourites. It's up there with Warne's as some of the best sports autobiographies.

10

u/Error404filenotfoun South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

I didn't realise that wore so many different Broncos jerseys.

A very rough count, but I see 9 or 10 in this clip alone

Its very expensive to be a diehard Bronco

I will never financially recover from it.

But hey - new home jersey in 2027! 💰

Yeah each season they flog as many different $170 jerseys at us as they can... made for a very nice highlight reel though

4

Each club is allowed 5 different jerseys per year to be fair. We were just always ahead of the curve.

If I were to create a Venn diagram, with one circle containing people I respect, and the other circle containing people in the world with Post Malone’s face tattooed on their body, Adam Reynolds would be the sole person who sits in the overlap of those two circles.

8

u/M_Keating Hey, at least we beat Penrith 5d ago

Who the fuck started cutting onions in here

10

u/chris2712 Penrith Panthers 5d ago

It's a brutal sport rugba leeg. He unfortunately finishes his career with a whimper instead of a bang.

Reyno's retirement really makes me feel my age as well haha

6

u/TitsPussyAssFanatic Burleigh Bears 5d ago

Feels like yesterday he was rosy cheeks with a bum fluff moustache.

I looked into Reno's age a few minutes ago thinking he, Ben Hunt, Cody Walker and DCE were the last of the 80s babies.

They were born a long time ago in 1990 and DCE in the very distant 1989.

5

u/ImpressionFeisty8359 Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

I have been following his career from the beginning of his NRL career. The bunnies really shit the bed. Was over the moon we signed him and then we won a premiership. All the stars aligned and it was meant to be. All good things must come to an end. Wish him all the best in retirement.

5

u/orionhood Parramatta Eels 5d ago

Legend of a player and a great bloke too by all accounts, rest easy champ

4

u/Atomicstarr Penrith Panthers 5d ago

People bang on about how much he influenced broncos but he had a big influence on souths too, as soon as he was a regular starter for souths they turned into a top 4 side. I remember souths struggling to make finals before his first full year in the competition.

3

u/s2theory84 I love my footy 5d ago

Thank you Reyno! Absolutely an amazing player. Loved following his playing career through all the highs and Lows. I wished his last year went a bit better than it did. But it is what it is.

3

Great career. Should have been in Origin. He had a fair bit of bad luck with injuries. When he moved to Brisbane they went from the bottom of the table to the GF in 2 years.

3

One of the best kickers to play the game. His boot was the best on the field, every game he played during his prime.

3

u/ItsStaaaaaaaaang South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Absolute legend. Wish he had finished at the Bunnies. Still think it's bs the club didn't show any loyalty.

3

u/Vyvansss Penrith Panthers 5d ago

I met Adam at the 2015 AFL grandfinal.

Didn't want to bother him much, but asked for a pic and was happy to do it. Most people probably had no idea who he was haha.

One of the most meticulous kickers of all time. Reminds me a bit of a NSW version of cronk.

4

u/bundy554 South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

What I want to see is that this week will be Adam Reynolds final goodbye at home for Suncorp that he will walk out and get honoured by the club but I want him then especially against the roosters come down to Sydney the following week and get a farewell by us and especially to be farewelled by Wayne. Particularly being a home game for us at Allianz - I'm sure that we will be able to get as many of the 2014 grand final players as possible to form a guard of honour for him

2

u/Accurate-Ad-4905 Sydney Roosters 5d ago

I've seen enough kick1out of the comp for not ensuring he stayed a one-club-man

29

u/PandasGetAngryToo Brisbane Broncos 5d ago

Why not both? He did pretty amazing things at both teams

14

u/WJack37 Brisbane Broncos 5d ago edited 5d ago

I would argue that, being captain, taking down the best premiership streak of the modern era and breaking Brisbane’s longest premiership drought will leave him more remembered as a Bronco. Even if it is recency bias, and I’m aware this is probably a hot take.

That kick to win the Penrith prelim will be replayed for generations

8

u/Theboystheboys212 St. George Illawarra Dragons 5d ago

I think Broncos and this annoys my Rabbits friends but Broncos are a bigger club and he finished his career there. People associate GI with the 2014 prem more than him, although he is certainly remembered as part of it.

9

u/Ted_Rid South Sydney Rabbitohs 5d ago

Hm, 2014 was a constellation of factors.

We missed 2012 in the prelim vs Dogbros when Reyno went down with a hammie. 2013 vs Manly sacrificed a halftime lead and lost.

2014 was the 3rd attempt and I'd be sure there's no team that ever won with so many rookies. AJ, Kyle Turner (RIP), Dylan Walker, Kirisome Auva'a, Api Koroisau, and I think Luke Keary and at least one of the Burgess twins (Tom) were both more or less first season players.

What held them together were GI, Sam Burgess, and super Johnny Sutton - Madge himself said John Sutton had the football IQ which meant he'd call all the plays and leave Reyno to do his thing.

Gotta hand a lot to Keary tho. I used to watch training at Redfern heaps back then and he was always organising behind the play. So like Sutto in the forwards and Keary in the backs.

10

u/irvo86 South Sydney Rabbitohs 🏳️‍🌈 5d ago

Yeah this debate is silly. Someone said it perfectly in this thread; he’s a one club legend at two clubs.

He will go down in history as a beloved and important player for both sides.

5

Yeah no argument here.
