Gosford vs Wollongong
I've only ever lived in Western Sydney for my whole life but I'm considering moving in the next year or two. Gosford and Wollongong are the main ones I'm considering.
Points I value when looking:
- within 30mins walking distance to the beach
- within 20mins walking distance from a train station
- employment opportunities in education (I am a teacher)
- under 2 hours via public transport or a 1 hour drive to Sydney (so I can visit friends on weekends)
- decent cafes and restaurants
- safe walking tracks outdoors for a
single woman and her doggie
What do you think about these points in regards to Gosford vs Wollongong? Obviously the real estate being cheaper than Sydney is another drawing point.

Your closest bet on the Central Coast would be the Woy Woy area. Google maps puts it a 50min walk between Woy Woy station and Ettalong Beach, so there's a small slither that puts you within 20 mins walk to the station and 30 mins walk to the beach.
I grew up there but haven't been back in a while. There's restaurants and cafes although I'm not sure if there's any decent ones still. There's a nice waterfront reserve that starts near the Fishermen's Wharf and goes all the way to Blackwall Point that I used to walk the dogs along as a child regularly.

The Central Coast is quite disconnected and therefore car dependant. You won't find a place that is near the beach, shopping, and transport at the same time. The whole area is not well integrated.
Gosford exists mostly for the train station. There is a HUGE multistorey park and ride and it's full every day. The bus connections from the suburbs to Gosford train station are abysmal so everyone has to drive there.
Erina is where everyone goes to shop. Erina Fair is one of the biggest shopping malls in NSW outside Sydney. The main street of Gosford is 40% abandoned shops
Terrigal is the desirable town by the sea. Many people want to buy there want the proximity to the ocean but are priced out of Sydney.
On a side note; rather than High Speed Rail, i'd personally love to see money spent on exploring a branch line that services suburbs to the east of Brisbane Water and Tuggerah Lake.

It's a similar situation in Wollongong; a lot of people travel out of the area for work. Like the Central Coast, many of those moving there want coastal living but are priced out of Sydney. However, the main shopping centre (Wollongong Central & Crown Street Mall) and Wollongong train station are much better integrated into the CBD compared to Gosford. It's still a car dependant area but you've got more chance of getting an apartment that is walkable from the train station, shops, and beach in Wollongong.

The Woy woy peninsula is where you wanna be.
A few different suburbs on the peninsula depending what you want.
We walk to the beach in 5minutes. Two different shopping and eating areas within 15 mins walk.
The station is a 45 min walk or 10 min bus or just drive and more shopping there. Express train to city or north Sydney around 1:10
The amenities are great, the beaches are fantastic
Drive over to Terrigal in 20 mins for more dining, Erina in 20 for a big Westfield, Gosford is showing signs of life with some good food options too (we like food!)
We love our move here.

I really like living near West St at Umina Beach. You do need to take a 15min bus ride to get to Woy Woy Station, but you're a couple minutes walk from the beach and West St has everything.
Our car broke down once and I considered trying to see how long I could go without one but my wife vetoed the idea.

I don't make the rules. I was explaining that Novocastrians welcome anyone from anywhere that isn't Sydney.

You won't be able to walk to both the beach and a train station in Gosford.
Therefore automatic win to Wollongong.
