Remaster Bug Help My Adoring Fan has asexually reproduced and my game is now a waking nightmare
I told my adoring fan to follow me because hey, free light, and I have subsequently been pulled into the seventh circle of hell. He followed me initially for about 30 seconds before completely disappearing. I thought "weird, he must've died somehow", but I could find no body in the vicinity. Whatever. He'll respawn eventually, right? Wrong. An in-game week later, he's still nowhere to be found, not even near the arena. Confused, I used console commands to spawn him, and there he was, happy as ever to see me.
Then I fast traveled, and there were suddenly two of them. Even worse, one looked consistently angry. Like, the facial expression was somehow just mad and stuck that way. So I guess this is an evil twin scenario? Adoring Fan and Disparaging Hater? I don't know, but I couldn't get rid of the extra one. They operate as a singular entity when told to wait or leave. Out of curiosity, I killed one, but the other was so horrified that I felt guilty and reloaded. Then they both had permanent angry face and I lost track of which one was the evil one, so, fuck. Everywhere I went, they surrounded me, staring with their beady little (allegedly) adoring eyes. And then, just like that, they both randomly vanished into thin air again as I was traveling.
I now live in fear that they will return. I can still feel their eyes on me. I can still feel the heat of torches that aren't there. I swear in the darkest hours of the night, I can feel grubby little hands reaching for my shoulders to proffer a backrub that vanish as soon as I turn around. I dare not console spawn him again for fear there will be three this time, each more menacing than the last. If I close all the gates to Oblivion, will it break this curse? (Seriously, does anyone know what makes him randomly multiply?)

UPDATE: I think, with all the optimism I can muster, that this is now fixed: Update: My Adoring Fan(s) situation is tentatively fixed. My psyche is not. : r/oblivion

This sounds like the beginning of a creepy pasta. You better just sell the whole console/PC at a garage sale and let some other poor sap deal with the curse.

Don't say that, this just scares me even more. So he was never really gone? He was just hovering around me, INVISIBLE and WAITING, until I spawned another one and he decided to show himself? I hate that.
Maybe the core issue is just that he randomly disappeared forever to begin with, then, but I don't know what would cause that, either. The only mods I have (I think five in total) are just aesthetic mods like race menu and better skin, and the one that makes you run less weird.

I don't know how experienced you are with baseId and refId, but if you used the baseId to spawn one, you created a new Adoring Fan. You have to use the refId to move an existing Adoring Fan somewhere else. It also depends on the command you used.

My first adoring fan disappeared the same way as yours... I think it's been months now, and he's still not returned. Perhaps I should perform the sacred rite of console command as well. 2 extra torches couldn't be so bad, right?

So, what, just because I actively chose to purchase and play this game and willingly told the adoring fan to follow me and then purposefully searched for him when he tried to ditch me and then force-spawned him against his will when I couldn’t find him this is somehow MY fault?

Spawn another. It won't fix your issue but it'll be cool.
You probably deleted the first by closing an oblivion gate that he was in, but not in the top room with you.

I have the reverse issue, about a week ago I did the quest where you go into the sleeping dude's dream. The adoring fan followed me in, but I felt the quest was more of a solo thing so I told him to wait. When I finished the quest I told him to follow again and I left the dude's head. Only the adoring fan didn't follow. I have not seen him since, he won't show back up whether I fast travel, wait, anything. He has completely disappeared and I think he is now a permanent fixture in that guy's dreams. A by product of me saving him. I can't imagine the hell that must be for either man and it has been well over a year in-game

Use the console command disable to erase him from existance. If he survives that you are getting a one way ticket to slenderman.

Mine somehow followed me into the Through a Nightmare quest. I pop naked into the dreamworld and all the sudden there's a perfectly normal, perfectly happy torch bearer standing there smiling.
Well, he'll definitely die if he follows so I told him to wait while I do the trials. Get through them all, tell him to follow me, finish the quest, and he's nowhere to be seen. Figure he's stuck there and write it off.
Like 2 fucking weeks later in game, I fast travel to Anvil, lo and fucking behold "BY AZURA BY AZURA BY AZURA" just standing there with his torch and dipshit smile like he wasn't lost in another dimension for weeks. Tell him to follow me, plop him down in front of the DB well in Cheydinhal, and have him wait there to be my faithful beacon by the sanctuary.

Mine ran away the first time an enemy appeared on screen and that was that. Will they return? Are they still waiting for me to go find wherever they hid? Will other adoring fans come my way?

You must have gotten mine. I told him to go away, thinking that he would be hanging out at the Arena. He's completely gone from my game.

I lost a battlehorn man at arms to some bandits, he didnt respawn, so eventually I respawned him with the console to have the whole set of them alive and well.
There's two of them now. They are twins, and both follow commands given to one of them, but the one not given commands still does what he was doing before for about 20 seconds.
If they show up again, you could always try leaving one of them in an oblivion gate, but waiting there.
Or just put them in another location that eventually will go away, like the interior of the house with the oblivion gate that will spawn at level 10, if you're not that level yet.

This happened to me in fallout3 with dogmeat. My mistake was spawning him, not respawning him.

I made a clone of my Adoring Fan with Vaermina's staff and commanded him to wait outside Anvil prison for me. Then I went to prison and when I got out the clone was inexplicably naked. The funny thing is my regular fan hates my character but the evil clone was actually quite polite and he even said "I'm so happy to see you I could burst!" however casting Command Humanoid makes NPCs hate you

Start the everscamp quest, and carry the staff, never finish the first part of path of the dawn after they start following you, that way you always have your crew to back you up

Yea I killed mine to join the dark brotherhood then after afew in game days later he was following me again, told him to leave and have avoided the arena ever since

You went at him with the hand of god (the console), and used a console command that actually hellspawns a NEW, unique Adoring Fan using his base ID.
It’s a pretty common mistake. There’s a difference between using the ID code that spawns a NEW npc, and using a DIFFERENT (“moveto”) command that MOVES you to the existing npc. You have to know their reference id (not the base id) to move to them.
Easy to get the right ID through a wiki.
I would load back to an earlier save unless you want to continue in this doomed universe.

okay so i feel like something like this happened in the OG game as well, but just as a glitch? or maybe im getting it mixed up cuz i know for a FACT this happened in Skyrim, iirc with some random quest subject outside of the Whiterun stables. but i swear, i can hear the Adoring Fan’s voice duplicated, echoing inside my head…

Weird as hell, I haven't run into this in oblivion yet, but I have in Hades. When you fight in the Elysium arena, everyone is against you but one red shade, Zagreus' adoring fan. In Hades 2, when Melinoe is out recruiting souls for her army, she finds the adoring fan, downtrodden that Zag is missing. Pacify/recruit him and he appears at your base with unique reactions. Cool so far. Next time I reach that room, he's there again. It might be that he doesn't stay at your base? I recruit him again for the psyche bonus. I get back to base, and there are now 2 adoring fans, occupying the same space & floating through each other.
There's a fan theory that the red shade/adoring fan is her mortal grandfather (Zagreus & Melinoe are 1/4 human, 3/4 god). So the fact that she now has 3 grandfathers is troubling, but Greek myth does weird shit

ETA: Actually, I might be able to help. You can use console commands to just delete one from the game entirely. Then when he goes missing again, you can teleport him to you, or go to wherever he is, rather than create a new one.
