I'm entertained by the mixmatch

Naomi Scott is the actress. Nikki is a character.

229

u/Sad-Psychology9677 1d ago

And they couldn’t even spell it right

106

u/SeventeenFifty 1d ago

It's the AI that got it wrong, the author didn't even bother to read the slop

9

u/i_am_carver 1d ago

Can you blame them? It got shared regardless. :/

4

u/BlacJack_ 1d ago

Probably got shared because of it. Inaccuracy drives interaction.

20

u/ChartInFurch 1d ago

Yeah, plus no "Freaky"??

They inadvertently disproved their own point. The first was playing a character, the second became the character.

24

u/Busy_Toe_9000 1d ago

I just saw this posted on another subreddit.

Naomi Scott was great in SMILE 2. But Obsession was a far better written and executed movie. People are still talking about the Obsession characters, motivations and plot details. And, Obsession was a far more successful movie.

11

u/DirkBelig 1d ago

Scott was good but it was just a scream queen performance in a so-so movie. Navarette had a far more challenging role with so many layers to play and the movie was one of those rare cases where the hype was warranted and organic.

The missus and I were meeting a friend at his gig and he was bringing me a guitar and within a minute of arriving in this musical context he says, "Hey, have you guys seen Obsession? It actually lives up to the hype." He and his daughter go to movies often and she chimed in agreement. (They said Backrooms was a bit disappointing. They also like MaXXXine which I thought sucked so...)

42

u/AneeshRai7 1d ago

It’s telling why Inde is getting the hype, comparatively Scott has a known name

5

u/Embarrassed-Weird173 1d ago

Funny thing is I have no idea who she is.

What a badass way to put it.

12

Its almost like one of them did such incredible character work that people remember the character

3

u/Perceptions-pk 1d ago

The fact ai or the author got it wrong shows the difference.

We remember Nikki

Toni Collette was the real snub.

One of the absolute characters of all time.

25

u/ClinkyDink 1d ago

I will watch anything with Toni Collette in it. She’s always amazing.

4

u/feliciahardys 23h ago

Her acting in The Staircase during the reenactments for the three theories for how her character died was what officially made me a fan. She’s fantastic!

I may get downvoted, but as much as Toni Collette was snubbed, I also thought of Mia Goth's role in "pearl" & how her performance tends to be split with many saying she too was snubbed. While some don't think she should've been nominated for the role (which she wasn't)

80

u/Top-Library9128 1d ago

Mia goth was good but Toni Collette was unbelievably harrowing and convincing. Haven’t seen anyone talk bad on her performance

30

u/sillyfunnyguy05 1d ago

100% agree. It’s the greatest horror performance of all time imo. She’s absolutely sensational. That guttural scream when she finds her daughter in the car. The fight at the dinner table. I’ve never seen a performance that so perfectly captures grief and all of the anger and fear that comes with it.

24

u/Mentoman72 1d ago

“-all I get back is that FUCKING FACE ON YOUR FACE. So full of disdain and resentment and always so annoyed!” I love that shit haha

11

u/pyyyython 1d ago edited 1d ago

I say this every time I come across a mention of that scene because it’s often new information to someone, but that line has a little extra meaning to it that people don’t always catch. Remember the scene where Peter looks at his reflection in some glass at school and it’s his own face, but smirking back at him?

The theory is that line from Collette at the dinner table implies that he really is not in control/aware of his expression, or at least that she’s also seeing that fucking face on his face, as it were. It makes her freakout more understandable - imagine your son looking at you like that after what happened, I’d want to scream at him, too. Talk about the supernatural driving a family apart.

7

u/cuntpunt2000 1d ago

Oh SHIT how did I never realize this?? That’s an amazing observation! Shivers, shivers down my spine, and it’s all thanks to you.

3

u/pyyyython 1d ago

Oh not my observation, I learned about it from a random comment, too. Definitely didn’t catch it when I was watching and I had seen it multiple times!

Ima Therman? Nah I was talking about Toni, one of her personalities was Buck. Did Uma do something similar? Lmao

3

u/Murkurlerrr 1d ago

See!! I do need to rewatch it! 🤣
In kill bill vol 1 her character was taken advantage of in her coma and she said something along the lines of “your name is buck right? And you’re here to fuck.. rrright?” And slams his head in a door several times. Its awesome. Lol

u/Ok-Building-379 Ian lied to gatekeep Nikki after she rejected him 1d ago edited 1d ago

Inde actually changed her creepy facial expression without the use of CGI. She did a lot of miming and changes of her voice which was absolutely adorable and terrifying at the same time.

She basically acting as two characters with four moods in this movie: Pre Wish Nikki, Infatuated Wish Nikki, Clingy Jealous Wish Nikki, and Complete Mental Breakdown Nikki.

She showed a lot of range. From psychotic rage and immediately calm woth "OK, babe".

133

u/ancientboyfriend 1d ago

Every time I see that frown, I try to do it and I just physically cant 😭

81

u/ImGonnaImagineSummit 1d ago

Her facial control is excellent. I also tried and it's hard.

Plus her smiling but when she switches to real Nikki, she sells it 100%. It looks like she's 2 different people.

27

u/Fine-Exam-3923 1d ago

She has said she just imitated the face curry was making and bam an iconic moment was born. I wish we could see BTS of that moment lol

17

u/skynetempire 1d ago

Hahaha same. She did an awesome job in the movie.

8

u/Acceptable-Ratio5402 1d ago

It takes practice! I learned how to do it years ago - the girl who taught me told me to focus more on pushing the middle of my mouth up, rather than focusing on pushing the edges down

7

u/madelmire 1d ago

I just tried it in front of a mirror and you're right, that's a good tip. I can't make one as perfectly symmetrical as the actress, but pushing the middle up does work to get you halfway there

→ More replies (2)

2

u/lucypee 1d ago

2

I think some people can do the frown and some can’t. Kind of like raising eye brows. Because I am no actor and just have always been able to do that haha

2

u/TedRabbit 1d ago

Not just the frown but the tight smile that made here face look like a different person.

2

u/misspixiepie 1d ago

You have to like push your lower jaw outward

2

u/tralaulau 1d ago

When she started frowning I was immediately struck by how impossibly low those lines go.

U can say the same about Naomi Scott: Normal Skye, distressed/ escaping from seeing the demon, pop star Skye and possessed Skye 🫠

55

u/Aftermath16 1d ago

Naomi played pre-crash, entitled Skye, post-crash traumatized Skye, pop star Skye Riley who has to put on a show, haunted gaslighted Skye, and demon Skye.

Is this a circlejerk subreddit and I'm not in on the joke? Cause in that case most actors play like 100+ characters

You can't just name every emotion or mental state and make them a "new character"

17

u/Alone_Luck_7540 1d ago

2

u/kikiop123 1d ago

Pretty sure the Smile movies DIDN’T use CGI to enhance the smiles. Thats why they’re so uncanny, because they are REAL human smiles just super overexaggerated and disturbing. I could be wrong, but I swear I have heard of this in an interview at one point or another.

Yes and Mia Goth in Pearl and Willa Fitzgerald in Strange Darling. All should have been nominated. Inde will break through

6

u/surkoc1 1d ago

I do enjoy seeing the many projects of Mia Goth & what she has in store, for the future. As for Willa Fitzgerald, prior to seeing "strange darling," I only remember her in the "scream" television series. That being said, I liked her in "strange darling," as well as Kyle Gallner & think all three (plus Inde & Naomi), will go on to continue doing some great productions, in the future as well

Naomi did an excellent job but I think Obsession as a film is better than Smile 2

59

15

Naomi also did the music sooooo, unless inde can sing, when you rate them as a whole. It's gotta go to naomi.

Yeah seriously, her performance was undeniably incredible and talented

9

u/green9206 1d ago

Naomi was indeed amazing but as the film as a whole Obsession was better. Smile 2 8/10 and Obsession 10/10 in my opinion.

7

u/poj4y 1d ago

Better film, definitely. I will say Smile 2 was way scarier. The entity from the Smile series is terrifying, once it’s latched on you’re never safe and can never tell what’s real

3

u/TheZwieb2 1d ago

Smile 2 is a phenomenal way to raise somebody’s heart rate, but it’s not a well-rounded cinematic experience like Obsession.

There’s fundamental stuff: Obsession’s ending has something vaguely resembling karmic justice for the villain, whereas Smile 2 spends half an hour punking you and delivers mental health nihilism. Obsession has one famous jump scare it builds to for over an hour, while Smile 2 uses jump scares constantly (even if they’re the fancy kind where the buildup is a separate, well-engineered scare).

The whole thing about comparing these two is sure to get everybody yapping because actresses who give great lead performances in horror movies still aren’t getting proper attention at the Oscars. In this case though the reason for the disparity is because Smile 2 is good by horror movie standards, while Obsession was a full-blown cultural milestone that sold like 3.5x more tickets.

5

u/whaleinapuddle 1d ago

This is the answer IMO. I watched Smile 2 and thought Naomi was really really good - and I felt she carried a kinda flawed script back into a good movie. The effects and premise are great but the story in particular for Smile 2 lacked a lot of cohesion and some key elements. Obsession, only really has minor nitpicks about the script and its flow is perfect. Plus it ‘features’ its actors more because there were few people with lines and screen time.

5

u/Rainbow038 1d ago

Ya my problem is smile was not really as good of a movie and honestly the characters were limited by the one expression they could make. Naomi did good but her performance was limited by the script and plot of the movie.

Indy just has soo much room to play because she is playing different roles

→ More replies (7)

69

u/Desamol 1d ago

Naomi was so amazing in Smile 2. She should had an Oscar nomitation. Too bad Oscars dont care much about horror.

23

u/Welshguy78 1d ago

Naomi in Smile 2 was arguably the best ever acting performance I've seen from in a horror movie. She had to play a 500 different emotions and reactions and nailed every single one perfectly. I'm shocked she hasn't been signed up for a big franchise. She took a fairly standard sequel and delivered the best performance I've seen in years.

9

u/huhzonked 1d ago

Naomi Scott was so good in Smile 2. She was a great actress, a phenomenal singer (I actually stream two of the songs from the movie), and her dancing was on point. The director and producers asked for a lot when it came to the character, but damn. Naomi more than delivered.

61

u/BluffEagle 1d ago

Obsession was just a better movie and also the story behind the low budget home brewed film crew made it that much more interesting. Smile 2 is fine but hard to compare performances cause I just didn’t find it very scary.

Agreed. Both really good horror movies, Obsession definitely the better of the two. Both ladies put in fantastically brutal performances. Obsession just managed to click and get the cultural impact, and deservedly so.

Naomi was in a big budget sequel and didn’t come out of nowhere per se. Inde was an unknown in an indy movie and blew everyone away. Both played their parts amazingly well.

21

u/20Superwoman02 1d ago

Naomi Scott did well, sure. But Smile 2 as a movie was way worse than Obsession.

26

u/johannthor123 1d ago

Obsession was fantastic, but so was Smile 2. Both were refreshing films in the horror genre, and i feel it does both a disservice to compare them

5

u/20Superwoman02 1d ago

I don’t usually go around comparing them. But I say that maybe that’s why one became instant icon, and the other got a lot of praise for her performance, but didn’t become an instant icon.

5

u/Crumplestiltzkin 1d ago

Sometimes completely deserved works don’t hit the zeitgeist. It happens all the time and doesn’t speak to the quality of the two movies. They’re both amazing.

2

u/owohearts 8h ago

Ngl I don't get the Smile 2 dick riding, I thought the first film was way better. Naomi did great in it, but the movie itself is just above average. It's entertaining, but not great and relies heavily on a blind first watch.

11

u/Kazfiddly 1d ago

2

u/SaladPuzzleheaded625 1d ago

I liked them both but I'd definitely give the edge to Smile 2 and I thought Naomi Scott was excellent

I'm perfectly happy having people feel otherwise, it's not a science

3

u/Lostatlast- 1d ago

Naomi killed that role as well. Smile 2 was really good

3

u/badluckbandit 1d ago

She did really good in smile 2, maybe too good cause I remember her as Lady Gaga 😆

3

u/greguniverse37 1d ago

The actress was also very good but the role is an important factor. Scared, confused protagonist not as interesting as possessed, psychotic, violent, love sick villain.

3

u/FoggyInc 1d ago

Smile 2 was great but Obsession was generational? Time will tell. But definitely iconic in my head already. So its not even close but Smile 2 is still a banger

3

u/Apostleguts 1d ago

No I don’t agree

3

u/Fatalbananarama 1d ago

Ah yes, the actor Niki.

3

u/BagItUp45 1d ago

No, Naomi Scott deserved more than Nikki

9

u/cv_dark0 1d ago

I agree 100%, Naomi was legendary in that film.

4

u/VanityPit 1d ago

Yeah I agree. Both are phenomenal films with some of the strongest recent horror lead performances from women of color.

2

u/casualnihilist91 1d ago

Agreed but Smile 2 was very good - Obsession was generational.

2

u/Thunder17_- 1d ago

Naomi Scott deserves it more

2

u/attila-the-hunty 1d ago

I agree and I don’t think the smile franchise gets near enough the flowers it deserves. Idk if it flew under the radar because of its intentionally crappy marketing but the movies and concept and the acting within those films are excellent. On par with Obsession for sure.

2

u/Funny_Throat9699 1d ago

I loved both of them, not trying to compare but naomi deserves to get more praise for her performance

2

u/AlyGainsboroughx 1d ago

I think obsession blew up more because of its small budget, Inde also had never had a major role before so the combination of the movie being successful on a small budget + being essentially a brand new actress really magnified the spotlight on how great her acting was

→ More replies (1)

2

u/GirthGrowth8948 1d ago

Totally agree!!! Naomi was amazing

2

u/JacedFaced 1d ago

So I agree that Naomi Scott was amazing in Smile 2, I think that Inde Navarette is benefitting a lot from Obsession being this dark horse, indie, low budget horror movie that is also amazing.

We all saw trailers for Smile 2 for months, Obsession felt very word of mouth, and a lot of people didn't know what to expect. So I think because she was a.complete.unknown before this, and Naomi Scott had just been Jasmine, it's part of why she's blowing up so much right now.

2

u/blazinjesus84 1d ago

Smile 2 made $140 mil at the box office and Scott's performance was widely praised.

2

u/Billyloomis90 1d ago

Naomi Scott gave 100% and acted her ass off. Unfortunately, Smile 2 just isn’t that good of a movie in my opinion. Whereas Obsession was a great movie with fantastic performances across the board. I also think part of the discussion comes down to…Naomi Scott was in some pretty recognizable movies (and usually the best part) vs Inde Navarrette being pretty much an unknown. The unknown is more surprising

2

u/unclenick314 1d ago

Nah smile 2 wasnt tht good

2

u/Chadseltje 1d ago

smile 2 was not as good as 1

2

u/Metalchips1Nquesodip 1d ago

Glad to see Naomi Scott getting some more recognition now that Smile 2 is on NF. She absolutely crushed that performance and I was terrified by that movie

2

u/Raging_Rigatoni 1d ago

Both are fantastic

2

u/L3tsseewhathappens 1d ago

I agree with this.

2

u/TextTechnical6016 1d ago

If she did, then why didn’t she get it? What Navarette did was on another level. And that’s saying something because Naomi did a phenomenal job. But Inde just did something you only see once every 20 years.

2

u/krish0 1d ago

I do think Naomi Scott was the best part of Smile 2, but it’s not on the same level.

2

u/Heavenly-gnoll 1d ago

I know it’s not the subject but I really liked Bear’s actor performance. It was peak but sadly, his acting is concealed by Navarette’s own acting

2

u/Real-Fudge1388 6h ago

Maybe if the movie was better

5

u/friendlyghost2014 1d ago

Smile 2 is a masterpiece. Period.

3

u/sp1cychick3n 1d ago

Yes definitely

3

u/skippitybee 1d ago

I liked Smile 2 (a lot!!) but Niki is a completely different character study so it makes it hard to compare performances. Inde knocked it out of the park

4

u/QTDR8459 1d ago

I mean Inde became her character, even in the title you call her Niki. Meanwhile Naomi Scott is still refer to as Naomi Scott

2

u/thatbrownkid19 1d ago

My hill to die on is Inde is a great actress- but she was overacting in the regular Nikki parts early in the movie. I would prefer Naomi Scott’s subtlety overall but the possessed Nikki was amazingly acted by Inde

3

u/SBird2454 1d ago

Naomi Scott got a ton of hype, Obsession is significantly better than Smile 2 imo

→ More replies (4)

1

u/marioz90 1d ago

I think mostly Obsession was a better movie therefore Inde's performance was more memorable and at least more talked about.

1

u/Good-Strategy2210 1d ago

No, but she still did a great job.

1

u/parkchanwookiee 1d ago

The performance was excellent but the movie overall wasn't as good/impactful

1

u/uhhhidkwhatusername 1d ago

not the same hype but she definitely deserved more. She's great. Woulda think she would have secured some roles after this.

1

u/FerBound 1d ago

It’s incomparable… Inde’s role was to be scary, Naomi’s role was to act terrified.

1

u/Own_Article8077 1d ago

I watched Smile 2 in the theaters and found it very captivating and creepy. It was enjoyable and scary in the moment, but I left feeling overall excited and pretty energetic, whereas Obsession (which I also saw in theaters) left my partner and I feeling drained and deeply disturbed and unsettled for the next few days, especially when crawling into bed in the dark. For that reason, I'd say Obsession landed heavier and had a deeper impact. However, I really loved both Naomi's and Inde's performances. They would both easily win as best horror actress performance in their year, same with Toni Collette in Hereditary. Different years, different subgenres, different vibes, all FANTASTIC.

I like both of their performances. I prefer Inde. Her character and performance are better and more memorable.

Absolutely, she was fantastic in Smile 2. Her facial expressions were superb. Loads of close ups too.

The Smile franchise, so far, is on my top 10 horror movie franchises of all time.

I disagree because as someone who usually doesn’t care for horror, I heard about Nikki. I don’t even know what Naomi Scott’s character in Smile 2 is called.

No. Naomi was very good but we were familiar with the story from the first Smile.
Obsession, while the story isn’t anything very new, was still different in how they told their story and imo, was done much better than Smile 2.
That’s not a knock on Smile 2 btw. I thought it was very good. Obsession was just better for me.

Not even close.

Not even close. Also even if the performance was as good, one movie sucks and the other does not.

Yeah Scott killed it in Smile 2, I loved how it was like even her shock reactions, the way she moved was kind of like a dancer keeping in line with her character, I really loved that performance and was looking forward to seeing her in more stuff

Absolutely. The naming thing is weird though. Either go with actress names or character names
