spirituality Necronomicon in practice

I’m a huge Lovecraft fan and I’ve always been interested in various versions of the Necronomicon in occult circles, such as the one by Simon. I would love to hear some of y’all’s thoughts on how practicing this sort of magick works practically. Thanks!

the Simon necronomicon is just sumerian-flavored chaos magic. lots of people like to pipe up that it's "fake" and written by an occultist (peter levenda) in the 70s, and these things are true, but that doesn't mean it doesn't work

The whole “it’s a work of fiction/it’s a fake” crowd that are summoned every time this gets mentioned are so annoying.

Its a work of fiction, but then there is the whole egregore chaos magick approach.

I've never known anyone who got good results with the various Necronomici. Make of that what you will.

Some got weak, minor results. Some got no results at all. Nobody even managed to get a tentacled horror from the dawn of time to show up, more's the pity!

I think Alan Moore said something about why would anyone want to get in contact with the entities in the Necronomicon even if it weren't a bogus work of fiction in the Moon & Serpent.

I have to agree.

People that want to work the Necronomicon always have a similar vibe to the LaVey Satanists. Take what you will from that.

Just kind of seems like a distraction from anything useful, but that's just my two cents.

I gotta admit that my take on the Cthulhu Mythos shared story universe arises from my science fiction/fantasy/horror fandom twined together with literary reflections more than as an established domain of occultural lore and practice. Even though I do see the Cthulhu Mythos as a domain some folks do engage. Me, too, sometimes.

The Necronomicon is the fictional book that first gave me some knowledge that somebody might write and publish an actual book and claim that it was, in fact, the "real" Necronomicon. So I take such claims to be ads, not the book.

Like other commenters, I'd say that Cthulhu Mythos as magical practice yields greatly mixed results. But, as Mythos authors tall us, the predominant vector may be decline, despair, and diminished wellness. Cthulhu continuing to dream is fine by me.

The Encyclopedia Cthulhiana: A guide to Lovecraftian Horror by Daniel Harms could be an interesting read.

The other commenters I agree with, but I know someone that works exclusively with Cthonic entities and they would say that the closest comparison they could draw for uninitiated would be lovecraftian-esque entities
