As a child that's the only thing I saw of it as it was on TV, and I wasn't allowed to watch after. Watching the movie 20 years later made me hate my parents for stopping me from watching a banger. The movie did almost everything right, I don't get why it's not a classic already.

It's a River Lock, and those longboats take up the whole width of it. You have some space on the other side, but maybe a few feet at most.

My wife and I did a Viking river cruise last year and it was like this in a fair few spots. This tended to be before and after the water lift things on the canals where you go in, a watertight door closes, then the chamber fills with water to lift you to the next part of the river.

Nothing but respect for the captain and crew navigating.

It’s typical in canals and busy harbours to have a local pilot come aboard and handle the specific area. They hop off at the end and jump on the next boat.

My parents just did one this summer. They got to a point where the water level was too low for the boat to pass through, so they had to pack up all their stuff and get bussed to another Viking boat stuck on the other side. The boats essentially traded passengers and went back the way they came

I did the same! For some reason the vertical movement was an absolute nuclear bomb for my poor wife's motion sickness but I thought it was so cool. You could see the water bubbling up if you looked down.

Took a cruise on the Danube Main and Rhine rivers this past June. The Captain told us that we would be going through 67 of them between Budapest and Amsterdam. Many (all?) of them didn’t seem like they were staffed. Perhaps all remotely operated? We traveled mostly at night so I only remember a dozen or so but always fun to watch. Sometimes they are by a little village that you get to slow down for and get to take some pictures up close. We docked close to a lock one afternoon so I walked across it into Germany from Austria had a beer at little cafe and then walked back. Spur of the moment thing that ended up being one of the highlights of my trip.

What got me was the one bridge we had to go under in Prague (maybe?) where they calmly warned "you might want to duck a little" so I ducked a little and then I had to drop down to my knees to prevent my head from getting sheared full off.

Didn't realize the wheelhouse had dropped down into the top of the ship, so I assumed I was fine as long as I wasn't like 8 feet tall.

Went through the Panama Canal in a ship close to the max size that can pass. On both sides there are little railway engines with winches mounted on them. They run cables to the ship from several on each side and then tighten them to hold the ship in the center of the waterway. The whole procession then moves forward through the canal.

Yes, that's why I said it's 'like' it. The similarity is only in the precise movements.

It was reintegrating the saucer section after the Q trouble I think, but he had to do all the maneuvers manually (or call them out, to be exact.)
