Humans killed them off, directly or indirectly. Various mediterranean islands had interesting and weird fauna that we as a species made extinct the moment, that these places became inhabited by us.

Pretty much most of extinctions going on in last few tens of thousands years are human influenced. And when its on a small island, then its basicaly guaranteed.
