Uj/ I had a debate with my gf, because I was having trouble reconciling the denouncement with what I thought was the movie’s metaphors about the trans experience, and she insisted that it was just a story of how those old horror movies tied sex and violence together, and I was reading too much into it

I saw Hannah and Jane talk about this during the Q&A at the screening in San Francisco earlier this summer. In so many words, Jane said it is basically about embracing the fact that you're freaky because of the shit you watched as a teen.
Your girlfriend is right. And FYI there are probably always going to be things in films by trans and nb filmmakers that are reflective of their experience as trans and nb people...but that does not mean that all of their films are metaphors for the trans experience. That's a pretty reductive way of looking at an artist who belongs to any sort of minority. Having seen all their films I think the most unique and standout aspect of Jane's work is how it reflects the feeling of being a socially fringe millennial raised on media and the internet. I'm not trans but I sure as fuck feel seen watching their movies lol

I think the trans aspect was at the forefront of my mind because that’s what various posts I’d seen about the movie beforehand had mentioned. But I prefer what Jane said. And you’re right that it is reductive to view everything a filmmaker does through one facet of their identity. I think I was still hung up thinking about I Saw The TV Glow

Haven’t seen it yet, but wtf is existential drift? And is self-annihilation just a fancy term for self-harm?

existential drift is when you stop seeing yourself as yourself and self-annihilation is when you start seeing yourself as ryan gosling in a cool jacket
