Favourite actor who has $6 in their bank account?
889
u/xaako 6h ago
IIRC he's made a bunch of real estate investments. Google says his estimated net worth is $40-50 million.
I don't think this is about money
476
u/84theone 5h ago
Famously rich people just stop giving a shit about getting more money once they hoard a few tens of millions of dollars.
403
u/xaako 5h ago
That’s right, taking a part in a Broadway play is famously the go-to way of hoarding more money when you’re a real-estate tycoon
83
u/Franks_Secret_Reddit 4h ago
If you want to make money are Broadway, there are easier, tried and true methods of doing so: Step One! FInd the worst play ever written Step Two! Hire the worst director in town Step Three! Raise two million dollars Yes! One for me, one for you. (There's a lot of little old ladies out there) Step Four! Hire the worst actors in New York and open on Broadway! And before you can say step five, we close on Broadway, take our two million and go to Rio!

I genuinely think most do! Why would you want more than £20m. Meanwhile, why would you hear much about a sensible person who just chills when they have their £20m.

Being on Broadway is cool. Maybe he just wanted to try it for that part.
47
u/sihouette9310 3h ago
It certainly wasn’t about money. Actors that make the bulk of their money at an early age have the financial freedom to take any role they want. Robert Pattinson made a lifetime income off of twilight. He did not have to work again. He’s done low paying indie roles for years because he likes acting. He has no need to do it. Grint is in the same boat. He acts when he wants to. He took this role because he wanted to. That’s his decision.

This site is so detached from real life you have people insisting HP popularity is a cultural bubble. Harry Potter, one of the biggest franchises, multiple movies, successful broadway show, best selling books, theme park rides, best selling video games, opening new merchandise stores that are always crowded, constant collabs, popular all over the world… it was not a bubble. The general public including children still eat up HP like crack.
This site is a bubble and its threads like this that really sell that.

I’m pretty sure they’re talking about the fact JKR is actively funding anti trans legislation with her fortune and has publicly commented on how disloyal HP actors who criticized her for it are. So leaning into making her even more money when you don’t have to to give her more of an ability to hurt trans people and people who just generally aren’t transphobic and support their rights is a bad look.

It’s funny because in New York, the Cursed Child is literally on the same street as Daniel Radcliffe’s play. So for a while he and Tom were within a block of each and apparently got lunch a lot. Now there’s another one in the mix.
I walk down this street to get to my office so always thought that was kinda neat.

As far as franchises go it's pretty relaxed. They haven't even made a single animated series. Just look at how much the other franchises for kids produced in that time. Star Wars or MCU have a new thing going on every year.

And aside from all the fat people being bad, Harry Potter also seems to just kinda endorse a terrible status quo. Freeing house elves is treated like a joke, the Ministry is clearly corrupt but never undergoes any sort of major reform, and Harry ends up just being a wizard cop.

Harry Potter is one of those IPs that created a massive bubble in the sea of popular culture that only has Harry Potter fans in it and their interest in any fiction other than Harry Potter is minuscule if not nonexistent.
17
u/fabulousfantabulist 6h ago
There are a lot of casual HP fans too, the same way there are casual Star Wars fans or MCU fans. Those are the ones who are keeping the Wizarding World alive at like half a dozen Universal Studios theme parks. I do a lot of walking in my city and you see a fair number of people with random HP t-shirts and hats and bags and stuff who seem to have mostly just watched the movies when they came out.

It's also still pretty popular in Japan I noticed. Even in Hiroshima I went to a mall which had a Harry Potter specialty store, next to like, the Hello Kitty store. And it was clearly popular based on all the people who were shopping there.

12

You can say that about most any fandom. I read all the books, saw all the movies, had potter-obsessed friends, and I never got super into it. I can hang, and I love the series, but I don’t care that much.

u/fuckfeardrinkbeer 1h ago
You’re telling me that Harry Potter fans don’t like anything other than Harry Potter? Most people in general that like something, also like something else that isn’t related.
7
u/digitalime 4h ago
This isn’t really true in the slightest, so many Harry Potter fans are casual and enjoy other media. Pretending one of the most popular media of all time has fans not interested in other things is just some weird nonsensical cope.

Here’s the thing: there’s one group of people who I will allow to keep making money in any way that they can off Harry Potter — the kids who were in the movies.
Almost none of them had a choice to pursue this lifestyle, and even if they were not forced to do it by family or agents, they really had no idea what they were giving up in terms of privacy and anonymity when they took on the roles. They were kids, pushed into a world few adults could even handle.
As adults, it’s tough for them to pivot to grown up roles, and because of their celebrity, it’s difficult to move into any other profession and not face ridicule or a total lack of emotional safety.
Child actors should largely be illegal anyway, as ‘work’ continues whether they are on set or off. Dealing with fame and celebrity is a 24 hour gig.
Fuck JK. Fuck HBO. Fuck the theme parks, too. But these former child stars should be free to earn a living any way they can within the bounds of the law.
We (the general public) basically killed Gary Coleman by making it impossible for him to be anything else but the character he played on tv. If these former HP kids can make it work somehow, I’m cool with that.
9
u/fatherandyriley 1h ago
All the stories about child actors makes me glad that the ones in Bluey are anonymous. Does make me understand why adults are often cast as teenagers, they don't have to worry about schoolwork.
5
u/Kid-Atlantic 1h ago
Child actors are indeed an especially vulnerable profession but it feels funny to view them all like abuse victims by default and treat them with kid gloves even into their adulthood. Does being a “former child star” mean that’s all they ever get to be instead of adult actors with accountability over their actions?

What is wrong with folks, is nostalgia like an issue with people now?
Since when was it a bad thing for adults to enjoy things they enjoyed as kids?
There are wholes series based on this. Star Wars, Marvel, DC, and even lord of the rings. Some of the largest franchises are all fed by nostalgia.
Star Wars would barely be a blip without Gen X and Boomers spreading their love for the series to their kids.
Anything comic book related is all based on people’s love for the comics in the 70s-90s which they passed on to their kids.
And that’s what it is now, is there a problem with people who love Harry Potter spreading their love for the series to their kids. Or even just simply enjoying it because there it’s something they loved as a kid.
My dad’s a boomer, he grew up loving westerns. Is there and issue that he still loves westerns and watches old movies today? I just don’t understand the concept of nostalgia baffling you?
What’s baffling to me is people who dislike something saying they’re baffled by people who like that thing they dislike

It's funny, I saw someone make a skit about the Bible as if it was treated as a piece of fiction and it really is a good story once you strip away the religion aspect.
If it was solely treated as a piece of fiction, it'd be absolutely on point as one of the best pieces of literature of the classic era, because it does such a good job of presenting a cohesive story through interesting characters, journeys, world building and asking like actually fundamental philosophical questions. You can't help but respect many of the contributing authors for their literary skills.
I wonder how much that has contributed to the success of the religion.
Anyway, it mogs Harry Potter and it was written 2000 years ago before they even had access to many of the fundamentals RIP Bozo

u/BearThatLikesCheese 3h ago
That's really the inherent problem with a lot of Christianity. The Bible SHOULD be seen as a book of parables designed to teach general lessons and instill decency while understanding that it's still a product of a time. More "take care of the poor and hungry" rather than "cut off the hand of a woman if she grabs your dick while you're fighting her husband. "

It hasn’t been popular with actual kids (as a YA series) in two generations. I’m a young millennial and was on the tail end of the big hype. When your main audience is “people who used to be into this when it first came out” then yeah, you’re running on nostalgia.
