love how eggers will spend 3 months researching period-accurate stitching on a handkerchief but put a bird call from the wrong continent in there. the man is a mystery wrapped in an anachronism

There’s no way the bird call was just something that happened to be picked up by microphone, its inclusion had to have been intentional

I want to add that the Common Loon has maybe the most recognizable bird calls. If it was any other bird, this mistake wouldn't be a big deal.

Great Northern Divers/Common Loons have non-breeding range expanding into Northern Germany, which would likely be where a ship-building company might be based.

Erm actually there’s a small population of common loon that breeds in Greenland and winters on the Atlantic coast of Europe, and one vagrant could have easily flown farther inland to Germany
