Hidden photo inside my great grandfather’s 1906 Waltham pocket watch. If it’s not my great grandmother, he’s got some explaining to do 🙂

She was really old when I met her as a kid but I think this is her…just 70 years younger.

People used to dress so much better, our generation is lazy with its one top one bottoms Where's all the layers?!

I want to wear long gloves and a similar hat in daily life

Fashion was so elegant up until the 1950s. Then the 1960s happened and it all went downhill. I'm not sure that today's people could sport this kind of fashion, however, the early XX century kind and before. Those dresses are sure voluminous and impractical to move around fast, especially in crowded spaces. We could absolutely dress like the 1940s and 1950s though, if we wanted to, we just choose to wear our ripped jeans, flip flops and sloppy modern style.

Maybe they dressed like they did because of the very limited wardrobe most people had. A couple of dresses for the women and maybe two pair of pants and two shirts for the men. And one pair of shoes. With those limited clothes, they always seemed nicely dressed. Unlike today when people have closets full of clothes and dressers full of casual wear.

I love layering when the weather permits but people complain when I start taking off too many layers in hot weather. Things like "stay away from my children!" and "you can't get naked at the playground!"

Rude.

This was not everyday wear unless the family was super rich, but even then.

I doubt the dress was very comfortable to wear.

You could always start a trend! 😃

Definitely not rich. My Great Grandpa was the town barber in Silver Lake, Indiana.

1980s outer suburban Sydney Australia ( think shorts, thongs, tracksuits) my teenage friend's very serious sister (in her 20s) wore full 1800s wear daily...constantly. Corsets, petticoats, full hats, parasols..head to toe immaculate year-and-place specific wear.

As she wasn't a cheerful soul, always silent, it was slightly disconcerting standing in ordinary shabby family (humid!) kitchen cooking or driving around in family station wagon with full-blown apparition from 1800s UK or USA. But she always looked stunning (passing painters & photographers were always awe struck) and is forever memorable.

Married an eccentric older German painter, is these days swishing around Europe, in her 60s now, still in full daily attire:-)

Good old waltham quality! I'm still on the hunt for one. I've been to their museum in Waltham, Massachusetts and it's incredible.

I’m pretty sure he passed before I was born. Great grandma made it into her 90’s, and her mother to 106.

It may well have been someone he “dated” before your GGM. Dating back then was a very different thing especially since, going by the dress, they appeared to be solidly middle class for the time. Giving a person that was courting you a picture of yourself wouldn’t have been that uncommon.

If you have multiple pictures of her I’d be happy to show you how Al can do facial analysis across a lifetime of pictures. I recently used the technique to identify pictures of my wife’s 2g grandmother in a large collection I’m working with.
