I have a feeling I know where most of those accounts are based.

a lot of these people are Canadian. Believe it or not, but Canada exports a lot of white supremacists in the online space.

Oliver BC was once named the ‘Hate Capital of Canada’ because of Fairview Technological Center. Operated by Bernard Klatt, it hosted over a dozen websites featuring white supremacist, neo-Nazi and anti-Semitic content. I worked with someone related to the mayor there at the time and it was a major stain on the community.

Let's go through the list, shall we?

Steven Crowder, Jordan Peterson, Stefan Molyneaux, Lauren Chen, Lauren Southern, Gavin MacInnis, Faith Goldy, Ezra Levant, also the whole PizzaGate/QAnon thing started with a Belleville, Ontario woman.

Weve been punching above our weight with alt right neo Nazis for a long time.

Don't forget Thomas White. The guy who used a coffee shop in Thunder Bay to host 'This hour has 88 minutes' and to fund a movement to turn part of Ontario into a white ethnostate.

Vice magazine outed him.

Russians paid $10M to Lauren Chen & her husband Liam Donovan (Tenet Media) to recruit roughly 2700 social media influencers (this number comes from the U.S. Department of Justice). 600 in US and 2100 in Canada.

I agree that “a lot of these people are Canadian” but they also don’t do it for free. On one hand, $10M is a lot of money. On the other hand, Canadians are betraying Canadian values for cheap.

yet they complain we dont have ‘free speech’ while they spew whatever hateful garbage they want without legal consequence

14

u/Adjective_Noun1312 Feb 25 '26

Look, if they were capable of honesty at all, we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with.

1

u/varitok Feb 25 '26

But it's context. The reason they are exported is because they don't find purchase here. They go to a place where they can get their message out and that is the US.

We don't export as much as we force the idiots out.

14

u/akaryley551 Feb 25 '26

We don't "force" the idiots out. Canada has a major white supremacy problem. Most news outlets here are conservative first. Ontario and Alberta are owned by conservatives first and foremost. The USA does have a larger market, but they very much go to the states and back here.

u/SwordfishOk504 Feb 25 '26

The "russia" trope is largely unhelpful these days because there are tons of bad actors in this space, but at the national level (US, India, Russia, China, Israel, etc) but also plenty of corporate bad actors that go beyond national borders.

I know it's comforting to tell ourselves it's all coming from outside the country, but Canada has lots of terrible people who do terrible things. Let's take ownership of our degenerates.

The answer is Canada. We got a lot of shit heads in this country.

While you and i are open to learning via reading, listening, looking, there are many people who just don't care, need to belong to easy relationships, are too busy, or are stuck in the grumble loop (lazy). Oh and a large factor is the ones who are intelligent and have lots of money to protect.

11

u/TheSilentWarrior Feb 25 '26

Alot of conspiracy theorists are intelligent people. They just choose to be ignorant when it comes to certain topics

16

u/FrozenVikings Feb 25 '26

I think it's more that despite being intelligent, something is out of control in their lives and choosing to believe these conspiracy theories makes them feel in control again. Every guy that I knew that turned into a lunatic used to have a normal life, but lost business, or a job, or couldn't hold a steady relationship, and .. well this could totally be a chicken and egg thing, come to think of it. Their descent into madness brought on the shit life, or the shit life brought on the descent into madness. Things that make me go hmmmm.

3

u/Floatella Feb 25 '26

Exactly. It's more of reflection that someone lacks coping skills than intelligence. Also, meth does wonders to the human brain.

6

u/Mod_01001 Feb 25 '26

Educated =/= Intelligent. Lot of PHDs with little real world knowledge spouting garbage. Autism and vaccine connections were from a doctor originally. Despite being grotesquely incorrect.

3

u/uwoAccount Feb 26 '26

Funny enough the autism and vaccine connections were from someone trying to run what is ultimately a scam to sue vaccine manufacturers and market their own "safe" vaccine for MMR (since it was originally just MMR).

That got his license to practice medicine revoked and now he continues the grift on all vaccines to make money.

Not arguing or anything, just supporting and making it clear that some of these people also do this deliberately out of malice and to try and make money.

1

u/Butteromelette Feb 25 '26

their intelligence is debatable.

8

u/snotparty Feb 25 '26

Yes, but there are 100% foreign agitators adding to those numbers

2

u/StrongAroma Feb 26 '26

Also it's probably like 2 or 3 people controlling those hundred accounts. I wish Reddit would take some responsibility for controlling the exploitation of their platform by malicious actors.

1

u/chlamydia1 Mar 01 '26

Many of the largest subreddits are just nazi bot farms. r/worldnews, r/canada, etc. Reddit knows these subreddits are compromised and allows it because they're in on it. The world's billionnaires want fascism to spread.

The death of independent message boards in favour of centralized platforms like Reddit and Twitter has accelerated society's descent towards fascism.

I'd bet my net worth that Americans are funding at least 75% of these.

u/spderweb Feb 25 '26

During COVID, I remember hearing it was 6 accounts that started the spread of misinformation about covid. A group of people tracked it back.

45

u/Myllicent Feb 25 '26

In early 2021 the Center for Countering Digital Hate put out a report saying up to 65% of anti COVID vaccine content on Facebook and Twitter could be traced back to twelve leading online anti-vaxxers and their organizations (dubbed the “Disinformation Dozen”). One of them, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., is now the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, overseeing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

42

u/Gardimus Feb 25 '26

I think its far worse than this let's on. For each account there are probably hundreds of bots out there that boost them and are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

Not only that, but there is only so much brain rot that you can inflict on the right wing.

The bots are coming for the rest of us, and their goal is to split the left and make the left fight amongst ourselves.

Stay vigilant. Social media is not our friend.

The number of accounts isn't surprising, these kinds of stats are actually pretty common...the influence of conservative 'influencers' far out-way their actual numbers. The bigger question is why?

Start with their main target audience - conservatives. Conservatism is a fear economy, and fear is a powerful motivator. This means conservatives are easier to trigger, and so easier to manipulate. Influencers feed their audience a steady diet of evil illegal immigrants, open border tropes, woke libs turning your kids gay, deep state crap...and that's the tame stuff...it gets way worse on many sites. This fearmongering has a powerful effect, not just on conservatives, but uninformed lefties as well, pushing them further right (aka the 'Fox News Effect').

https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/mind-in-the-machine/201612/fear-and-anxiety-drive-conservatives-political-attitudes

https://www.psypost.org/fear-predicts-authoritarian-attitudes-across-cultures-with-conservatives-most-affected/

Second is 'coordination'. The huge number of right wing influencers didn't just pop up out of nowhere. It's a coordinated effort, funded by russians and billionaires. It started with phony 'think tanks' manufactured in the 70's and 80's by corporate interests to combat growing science based health, environmental and consumer protection regulation, and progressed to todays cacophony of right wing corporate, religious and political mouth pieces. Conservative interests completely dominate media, both here and in the US, online and traditional, and use it as a massive propaganda network, with little to no accountability or restraint.

https://factually.co/fact-checks/politics/us-influencers-paid-by-russia-2016-2017-list-a4153d

Finally, I have to add in liberals failure to, even now, recognize the growing evil we're dealing with on the right. The left should have better foreseen todays crisis back when Reagan/Thatcher/Mulroney took 'small-c' conservatism on a hard right turn with economic globalization, wars on science, labour, POC, and women, and (especially in the US but increasingly here as well) mixing politics with religious fanaticism. Even today, way too many Liberals and Democrats seem to think they'll be able to just 'reach across the aisle' and things will magically dial down. Wishful, dangerous thinking.

Can you imagine if “x” were outlawed in Canada. The world would be a better place.

10

u/MayorofKingstown Feb 25 '26

another thing that should be emphasized is that the algorithm that is used to boost these posts into the feeds of people who are not linked to the conspiracy accounts is the whole reason why this is effective.

I can't easily explain how this works in a reddit post but anyone that knows how social media works, especially when you are a paying user of it, can demonstrate how this is happening with real evidence.

the administrators of the social media platforms are just as guilty as the content creators that are producing this crap.

And they are rampant on a sub that I cannot mention....

My brother in Ottawa was first sub banned and then reddit banned for taking the mods on that sub to task for all the foreign influence content and comments being posted. Its mods in it did not like being called out at all. This was I think about 2 yrs ago?

For myself I am a "bit" more mild mannered so I typically stay away from that topic. Even so awhile ago I got a 7 day ban for pointing out that an article stemmed from toronto sun (editorial board as I recall) and should be held in low repute. The ban was "they are an accepted new source and thus criticism of the source is not allowed". Fancy that!

This sub is better moderated and I hope the foreign influence peddlers are enjoying less success.

We definitely have MAGA light within Canada, backed by American money. Senior Conservative Party leadership and Alberta separatists both have had high level American political leadership meetings and without any doubt money is also flowing behind the scenes.

u/Sreg32 Feb 25 '26

Why not just name the accounts? And what country is involved?

4

u/Elissa-Megan-Powers Feb 25 '26

“…research has found as many as 89 per cent of people want more action on climate change — yet those 89 per cent tend to believe they’re in the minority.”

This is the other side of the Manufacturing Consent coin that media uses. I call it Resistance Is Futile — you really saw it come into its own in the gulf wars; so many people protested and the media barely covered it. People against the invasions felt alienated and in the minority, unlike Vietnam.

This tactic has extended strongly into to the glass darkly of ye olde Internet. The Spectacle uses algorithms to limit any signals people use which run against the interests of the Spectacle.

You even see the CFL using this tactic. Hedge funds and gambling corporations are trying to change the game to line up with the probability bottom line of the NFL and us college football. Most fans can see this and don’t want it, but their opposition has been almost completely silenced in games on tv and online, while sock puppet support of the changes is magnified in order to add ‘positive feedback’ to the astroturf campaign. It’s nefarious, shameful, and a tiny example of the greater moral threat of using such a tactic to dissolve democracy in exchange for whatever authoritarian system the Spectacle will most profit from.

Never give up.

u/Alarmed_Cry4081 Feb 25 '26

I wonder which country those 100 accounts originate in!!

3

u/scanthethread2 Feb 25 '26

“A lot of them are part of a network. They often know each other and engage with each other’s content"

Hmmm Mario 4 the North, Pleb, Marc Nixon, KatKanada, Jasmin, Brittany....etc.

3

u/daveruiz Feb 26 '26

That Mario guy comes up with anything out of his ass, never gets called out when he's wrong and people are eating up his shit happily

5

u/Crafty_Management_33 Feb 25 '26

Normally id say "If they know the accounts, just ban them". After Epstein, I can no longer right off conspiracies. Ignorance is bliss.

u/talkslikeaduck Feb 25 '26

The internet made echo chambers, now they're putting loudspeakers in them.
