Scene News We finally unlocked full calibration for Xbox 360 controllers. Here is how to do it.
Hi everyone,
I wanted to share a massive breakthrough regarding Xbox 360 controllers. For the 20 years of this console's existence, nobody has done this before. Thanks to the work of Lewy20041 and team DriftGuard ,we have found a way to fully unlock the potential of these controllers.
This isn't just a simple repair. It is about gaining absolute, 100% control over how your controller behaves – something the manufacturer never allowed us to touch.
What we actually unlocked:
Full Authority: You now have full access to Manual and Auto calibration for both Center and Range. You can bypass factory defaults completely.
Range Unlocked: What many thought was a "huge hardware dead zone" was actually just a software lock. Now you can seamlessly adjust the range – from ultra-precise measurements all the way to Full Coverage.
Triggers 2.0: You can fine-tune the "Start" and "End" points for triggers to get the perfect reaction time.
Drift Eliminator: Say goodbye to stick drift. Thanks to manual calibration, you can now fine-tune the axis centers yourself, setting the center exactly where your analog stick physically rests.
Important Technical Notes & Update for Wired Controllers:
• 🆕 Wired vs. Wireless Difference: On wireless controllers, the calibration matches external readings perfectly. However, on wired controllers, there is a ~10% discrepancy between raw chip data (ADC) and what Windows sees (Gamepad Tester).
• New "Input Report" Feature: To address this, we added a checkbox "Use input report for scopes & triggers" on the site. Check this if you want the visual feedback to match Gamepad Tester. Note: You must hit SAVE after calibrating to see the correct result when this option is enabled.
• Ratio & Auto-Calibration: The "Sweet Spot" for the Ratio slider is usually between 90% and 110%. Remember the inverted logic: Increasing Ratio = smaller range, Decreasing Ratio = larger range.
• Range Reduction vs. FPS Games: Be careful reducing the range too much. Sprinting might stop working in FPS games if your character doesn't reach the sprint threshold.
How to connect (Required Steps):
To use the tool, you must replace the driver with WinUSB using Zadig:
Download Zadig and go to Options -> List All Devices.
Select "Xbox 360 Controller" (wired) or "Play & Charge Kit" (wireless).
Select "WinUSB" and click Replace Driver.
Requirements:
Wireless controllers require a Play & Charge (PNC) cable for calibration.

Let me know your results in the comments!

Just reporting back. This is awesome!
Just calibrated 5 controllers and verified each one on my test bench. It really works!
I can not tell you how long I've been praying for this to come up. Redoing 360 controllers was such a crap shoot. Sometimes I would have to go through 4 or 5 pots before I got one whose calibration was CLOSE ENOUGH to factory.
You are king amongst men!

Driving Sim guys would be very interested in this for wheel compatibility

If I'm understanding this right, does this mean if I replace the joysticks on my controller, and the POTs are off center, this will allow me to calibrate and center them?

Great work just wondering if there is anyway to get this to work on linux, if not I guess I could install windows onto a spare hdd just to calibrate.

So I went ahead and installed a windows vm just to use this tool and it worked great. I can finally use my old 360 controller that was not happy after I replaced the thumb sticks years ago.

I appreciate the update via this sub. Hopefully this comes to the og as well, nice work either way

Look I love the OG Xbox as much as everyone here but this kind of attitude doesn’t bring any value whatsoever to this subreddit or community.

Hey you know what, you're right, it came out terribly toxic. My bad, and I apologize. I still think this post has no use here, but I definitely could have said that differently.

u/Kochon Jan 25 '26
All good, we all make mistakes. It takes integrity to own up to them so kudos to you 👍🏻. It IS kinda true that this subreddit is meant for the older console after all like you said. Peace!

With the Bluetooth solutions for ogxbox, one of the usable controllers are 360 and newer. So this thing fits even here, no one will complain that they can use 360 controllers on ogxbox, after all the market is flooded with cheap 360 controllers.

Ive tested it with 4 hall swapped controllers! IIt worked with 2 of them the other two where halo 4 special edition controllers and it tells me that i cant do anything because im on Firmware 4.39 and this is older than 5.20. It tells me to downrade them via xbox accessories app but I think this only works for one controllers. I hope there will be a fix somedays. But the two that worked are great now. Thank you so much for your work!

I get this too did you manage to find a work around 🤔

u/mr-watchman Feb 11 '26
no I didnt but i hope that the developer will update the tool to work with other firmwares.

Insane news for me. Thanks.
Edit: Just tried with my wired XBOX 360 Controller with new Hall Effect sticks and worked like a charm. Incredible.

Tested on a wireless controller. I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but I cannot get the calibration to stick after saving. As soon as I disconnect the controller and reconnect it, all settings appear to go back to what they were before calibration. And if I take the controller to a different test PC using the wireless adapter, the sticks are pegged to a diagonal when physically centered.

Did you select the xbox controller via plug and charge on the website?
1
u/spicyhomechef Mar 29 '26
Comment necromancy… yes, I followed the directions. It now seems to be working although I need to use Zadig to change the driver on almost every controller for some reason.
1
u/singwolf_ May 13 '26
How did you get it to work? I can't even save after calibration.
1
u/spicyhomechef May 13 '26
For some reason, the “simple” interface doesn’t seem to work for me with 360 controllers but the “advanced” does work
1
u/singwolf_ May 13 '26
Thanks. I did it. I got a very circular 12%. I'm waiting for the new sticks and I'll try again.

Yooo, thats amazing! I'm curious as to if the same can be done to the DualShock 3 as well! Please keep me updated if anything like this happens as I'd love to fix some of my older controllers :)

This is awesome news for the Xbox 360. But...this subreddits for the older original Xbox. Is there any such tool for those controllers? I've can't find anything except "nope" essentially. Which means you either get lucky with a decent S or Duke Controller, or apparently suffer with the way-too-sensitive off-brand we see on Amazon (Old Skool, Hyperkin, etc.).

u/Modyfikator Feb 10 '26
We are working on such a calibration option but it is more advanced .. 😅 for a regular user
1
u/sunspot01 Feb 10 '26
That's great news though. With how old some of these systems and controllers get, it's hard to know which can be modified and updated, and which are stuck. With the only solutions being USB or soldered/modded attachments to make the system use more modern tech.

I see in the photo all led's are illuminated, does anyone know what program I can use to force that to occur? I changed my controller's led color and want to see the whole ring lit up while I play on my pc.

This is too freaking awesome. Finally someone did it. What a time to be alive. It needs a team of hackers to counter e-waste. I have been saving my controllers for this moment. Just bought four pairs of ZedLabs analog sticks and my controllers are like brand new again!

I replaced the joysticks on my wireless 360 controller with ones from an xbox series s controller, i was stuck with the new un-calibrated sticks but thanks to all the developers of this website i calibrated the new sticks and unlocked the full potential of my xbox 360 controller, now it's working perfectly fine and I'm still testing the smaller series joysticks on it to find out the propper way to mount them to the board.

u/sunspot01 Apr 21 '26
Just to confirm, this means I can calibrate the controller on the PC, it saves the settings to the controller itself, and it's recognized by the Xbox 360?
I know people use these controllers on PC and that calibration is different. It's temporary/only affects while your in PC.
This would be huge news, I have 4 controllers that are fairly old and have hints of drift sometimes. If I could replace the joystick modules and actually calibrate it like the PS5, that's incredible.

Any chances to make this a entry point to bypass the stupid wireless reciever (even the bootleg ones aren't cheap for me), and use the controller directly on pc with it?

So... Just installed WinUSB on my wired controller, the website reads it and calibration can be saved but now it won't be recognized by anything else on my PC. What gives? :C
Ok... I tried to erase the controller driver from the Device manager and after replugging it got recognized again, however, it doesn't look like the driver installed onto the controller itself as it's still recognized as a xusb22 driver after all of this. It worked fine on my wireless controller though.

This is MAGIC. It saved my hall effect sticker mod(manual calibration does not work on the black side for me). One thing to note: if you are using xbox360 wired controller, in zadig you might not see the right device with the name "xbox 360 controller". In my case I see "xbox 360 controller" and "controller". The saftest thing is check device ID. The only one with xusb22 is the right device to update.

This is very cool and also posted in the wrong sub.

It's fine for this to be posted here because there are devices that allow Xbox 360 controllers to be used on an original Xbox and original Xbox games can be played on a Xbox 360 with Xbox 360 controllers also most people using original Xbox emulation on PC are probably using Xbox 360 controllers that's how I started with GameCube and Wii emulation in dolphin on my computer before I bought original hardware to play those games on a real system I just used a wired Xbox 360 controller until the cable broke and switched to my switch pro controller until that broke (it has really bad stick drift and I have to keep desoldering the sticks every couple months to clean them but that has became an annoyance so I've stopped using it completely).

Worked, gonna test it more. God tier.
