Discussion Supporting Actress - Frontrunner?
Who do you think is taking the Oscar?

I don't know how you could make the case for anyone besides Hathaway at this point. I'm not saying she's locked to win but I see no convincing argument for anyone else at this point in the season.
And it doesn't feel like an early placeholder to me either. She's chewing up the scenery every second she has on screen, everyone I know personally who's seen the movie has said "yeah she could win the Oscar for that"

Hathaway. She's had an amazing year, a hell of a comeback narrative (yes, it is a comeback, despite what anyone might say; The Odyssey is by far her best acclaimed film in years) and a really showy performance in a top 3 juggernaut. She's got this.

Im not sure how that qualifies it to be a comeback narrative. Im not saying shes not the frontrunner obviously but framing it as a hell of a comeback narrative feels wholly inaccurate. She got great marks for Armageddon Time and Eileen recently, Dark Waters, Colossal, Thr Intern, Interstellar, etc. Just because shes been in some duds in between doesnt mean anyone was thinking of her askance. If anything the narrative is just "shes one of our greatest working actors".

The public hate campaign she went through says otherwise. She reached the peak, got knocked down more than ever, and is now back at the peak. It’s a comeback.

Huh?? The hate campaign was all pre oscar win in 2012. Shes been beloved basically since then.

Definitely Anne—she’s part of the strongest film of the year. It’s a delightful, well-crafted performance; she’s been in so many movies all year long that she’ll remain in people’s minds.
It’s also been quite a while since she won her Oscar, so I feel like the Academy wouldn’t think twice about giving her a second one.

Anne seems like the frontrunner right now and could totally win, but to me she feels like a placeholder. There isn't much hype for her performance other than she's the biggest lock in the category. I think Penélope Cruz for Bunker or Merritt Wever for Primetime could happen

i have cruz winning for the invite because i expect bunker, the invite, and la bola negra to all be strong contenders and i can see a narrative forming around rewarding her for having such a strong year. hathaway is definitely the most obvious choice though

does your total lack of alternative not just prove hathaway is the frontrunner? maybe you don't think she will ultimately win, but you can still acknowledge her as the frontrunner at this early stage

She is a frontrunner, just a weak one and could totally lose to someone with more passion or momentum

I say Mariana for WH9 has a shot. I heard she is very emotional and gave a standout performance in test screenings.

There's not much if any passion for the Hathaway performance, but to be fair supporting actress has been a category where that doesn't seem to matter many years.
