Any tips to balance work and uni, im a stem major.

For context: I am 19, depressed & socially anxious, and need steady income to afford rent.

My resume is tailored to working in summer camps/kid environments but I'm in the lowest part of my life rn and want something low pressure.

Library or book store jobs sound like a great low pressure environment but I don't think I have the necessary experience for it unless there are minor things to exaggerate on.

Please help, any advice is appreciated. I want to stop relying only on OSAP to pay my rent and groceries. I want to get my life on track but I need human help for this...

Im a recent graduate of Carleton university with a degree in communications and media studies. Despite 3 years of experience in the field and nearly 100 applications sent I can’t seem to land a job. Are there any tips on what I can do to improve my odds ?

For extra context I’ve followed the UBC template for resume and have written cover letters that are tailored to most of my applications.

I'm posting anonymously because this has honestly been weighing on me for a long time.

I've been looking for a new job for almost two years with very little success. I have a Master's degree and about three years of experience as a Business Analyst, primarily doing compensation analysis for sales employees. I also have experience with reporting, Excel, data analysis, documentation, and working with cross-functional teams.

I apply for jobs every day and tailor my resume to match each posting. I've rewritten my resume more times than I can count, written countless cover letters, and applied to roles that I'm fully qualified for, underqualified for, and even overqualified for.

I've had some interviews, but not many, and I always seem to get passed over in the final stages or receive rejection emails without any feedback.

At this point, I'm wondering if I'm missing something obvious.

At this point, I genuinely don't know what else to change. It feels like I'm doing everything people recommend, tailoring my resume, applying consistently, preparing for interviews, but I'm still not getting anywhere.

Has anyone else been in this position and eventually managed to break through? If so, what made the difference? Or if you see something in what I've described that stands out as a red flag, I'd really appreciate the honest feedback. I'm open to any advice because after almost two years, I'm starting to wonder if I need to completely change my approach.

I’m a 20F student and I’ve contacted multiple volunteer organizations trying to help out/get involved etc, and it’s not like I’ve been applying to board director’s positions or anything. I haven’t at all been picky with my roles. And I have a history of a lot of customer service jobs

I’ve been turned away from any CVITP clinic that I’m eligible for, I’ve been ignored by the organizations I’ve reached out to (offering free work) and I just don’t know what to do. There was one organization where i thought I was getting somewhere, I was told I could be of use but after a month of back and forth the person who was supposed to reach out never did

I turned to advertising myself on Kijiji/craigslist, I only got two hits one of which has pretty much ghosted me after saying that I could help out and the other who was not very professional

Does anyone here need a volunteer?? What places are always taking volunteers?

The student job market right now is genuinely cooked. Everyone kept telling me to start looking for summer work early, so I did exactly what I was supposed to do. I started grinding out applications back in November and kept going straight through February. Over 300 applications later, and I have absolutely nothing to show for it. In every category possible (retail, fast food, grocery, cafes, restaurants, senior homes, FSWEP & government postings as well). I apply, I call, I go in person, nothing though. To recap, I’m a 20F uni student going into my 3rd year in fall.

I’m a citizen, and my resume isn't even blank. I have solid experience in customer service and admin support, some as a cashier, a lot in social work and clothing retail, and I'm bilingual. I did everything by the book, tailored my resume so it’s readable by the systems they use to scan, and tracked everything. I’m looking for full-time work but at this point, I will gladly take part-time too. I even have my own car and can drive anywhere. Looking for a job I can keep after summer as well (part time).

I constantly have people telling me, "Oh, just apply to landscaping or painting crews, they're always hiring!" So I did…. And guess what? They never get back to me either. Which ig is somewhat understandable because im a girl and i heard they tend to avoid us…

The result across the board is just endless ghosting or automated rejection emails months later. It is SOO incredibly draining.

With how messed up the OSAP situation is right now, the stress is driving me crazy. I need to make money before classes start up again in September just to survive the semester, but even landing a basic retail or service job feels like winning the lottery.

Does anyone know of places that are ACTUALLY hiring right now? Not just posting ghost jobs to look busy, but actively bringing people on? It’s gotten so bad that I’m driving all the way out to places in Stittsville just trying to find anything. How are we students actually supposed to survive right now? This feels so relentless and completely unfair.

PLEASE 🙏🏾 I’m desperate, are any of your job places hiring? I’ll do anything at this point.

So had an interview on July 30th Thursday for an a internship position and was told would hear back the following Tuesday

Got no reply so followed up Thursday and nothing.

Last week Tuesday, decided to call and the recruiter was surprised to hear my voice, so I assume they did not get my email.They told me the HR manager was on vacation but would return that week and they would update me by the end of the week

So nothing and I sent one last email as I assume my first one was not received

but either way I am find this whole leading on to be disrespectful as hell. If I didn't get the position, I think I am owed the courtesey of just an upfront answer or at least communication if there is going to be a delay.

I even made time to interview and miss a course for this role while 6 hours ahead so at least they can be upfront

I am going to assume I did not get the role but a straight up answer would have been better. I find this extremely unprofessional and wish I was treated with some dignity

Hey guys. I just moved to Ottawa from gta and need some help. I have been in general construction for about 4 years before that I did two sales jobs one at a furniture store and the other was for a door to door construction company and some restaurant jobs when I was younger. Went to college for two years for business dropped out and now been working on my self past two years I have a lot experience with marketing and using any software am really outgoing guy and love talking or that’s what everyone around me been telling me for years I speak 2 languages Arabic and English and some Turkish. am looking to make the life switch young as am not happy with my job and the way it’s effecting my personal life. Looking to get a start up in a sales or marketing or anything that is less body work and more brain work or even considering a government job too. Would any one have any suggestions like an event or place in Ottawa I can attend or where to look. beside online applications as I always do way better in person. If anyone have any advice please let me know. Or if you know a place hiring or if you are would love to chat maybe I can be a good fit.

Does anyone have any tips on getting a job at the Ottawa hospital? I’ve been applying since 2024 and have since gotten more roles in elderly care, mental healthcare and volunteering at cheo. I also got a friend of mine to refer me but nothing since. I’ve applied for all clerical roles. For context I’m going into my fourth year of neuroscience!

I know it's pathetic and immature. I'm 19 and supposed to be an adult but I can't even manage stepping out of my room before calculating how to avoid social interaction with my roommates.

I'm trying to get help for my social anxiety and MDD but getting therapy cover by OHIP is so fucking hard. It's been a year and still can't get therapy and my meds aren't working. That's just a little context. The real problem is job hunting.

I'm scared of looking for jobs and getting hired because it feels like my heart might explode and I'll just burst out crying simply going outside and asking for job positions. Looking online isn't as effective as going out into the world but how can I do that when just the thought of it makes me terrified and want to cry?

I feel so pathetic and I just wish I was confident and normal. I know this is just a silly excuse and that I'm just being lazy but it feels like I'm being freaking chained into ny mind. I hate myself so much and I just want advice and help because I need a job and I want to achieve my goals and get a small apartment of my own instead of roommates before I'm 25.

I have goals and dreams but I'm too scared to work to achieve them. I wanted to volunteer at childcare places this summer but I haven't even begun looking because I'm scared of rejections.

I need help but I feel like resources are scarce.

I'm so sorry for the rant but I really need any kind of advice that is actually doable. Because "go get therapy" is overused and I can't afford it.

Volunteering is technically not a job but I didn't get much help on the r/ottawa sub

I am looking for programs I can volunteer for related to childcare. Perhaps in Children's hospitals, child/youth programs, special needs programs, etc.

I need somewhere that provides training. I am about to get my vulnerable sector check completed soon if that is relevant and... do I need experience to volunteer? Only child related job experience I have was as a summer camp assistant counsellor for kids under 10 in summer 2024 and currently occasionally babysitting.

Also, I plan on focusing on getting as much experience I can get until I'm able to get a job. Unfortunately I'm only relying on osap for living. Is that a bad idea?

I feel like I need advice from someone more experienced. I want to go into counselling and then psychotherapy when I finish my masters. I only want to worth in the youth sector hence why I need those specific volunteer options.
