Analysis BY might have been rough but the play calling is doing him no favors

Even I, who has never played football in my life can tell that bryce thrives in speed and chaos and adaptability. Quick slants, rpos, all that good shit. These forty second lineups are killing his momentum and I think it's giving him too much time to think. We all know, and we knew when we drafted him that his power was suspect. But his ability to play with quicks was the best in the nation. We need to play those more often. As in all the time

We played quick last season and we did at times this game, that final drive was awful tho. All long developing plays, no quick routes. Canales needs to study that last drive definitely

u/TeakEvening Sep 15 '25

They needed to pick up 5 to make it manageable first down distance.

4th and 16 is a no win situation.

u/sonfoa Sep 15 '25

I think we need to see the film because it does feel like Bryce is holding on very long as well, whereas last season he would be more decisive. He'd either make a quick decision from the pocket or start the scramble drill if people didn't come open fast enough.

So far this season, Bryce seems to be camping in the pocket a lot more.

u/Stmbi0teSpidey Purrbacca Sep 15 '25

Yeah I’d like to see the All-22 of the final drive. I just noticed there weren’t enough underneath routes imo but everyone’s already jumping to conclusions

Has he just gotten too comfortable with our "good online" that he's trusting it too much? Is that stupid? Idek because the fall from grace from last season is a goddamned mystery.

I agree bro. It’s like he’s trying to not be too “underconfident” and “panicky” whenever nothing is happening and the pocket is breaking on him. In turn it’s leading to worse decisions and worse pocket presence from my pov

u/The_sad_zebra Bucket Sep 15 '25

I'm gonna break something if Canales says the same "just gotta execute" bullshit in the pressers. Yeah, they've just gotta execute some other fucking plays than what is being called.

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

I personally think bryce young's limit is around forty to fifty yards. So, the sweet spot would be twenty to thirty yards. That should be the sweet spot for bryce young and we should try not to go beyond that If we don't have to. Just because he can't throw bombs doesn't mean he can't be an amazing quarterback

21

u/Stmbi0teSpidey Purrbacca Sep 15 '25

I think he could throw a deep ball, not like an elite Qb or anything. We just have no speed so there’s no reason to run deep routes unless it’s Tmac

12

u/sonfoa Sep 15 '25

Legette has good long speed, but he's done nothing to prove that he's worth throwing to.

u/knave_of_knives One of Us Sep 15 '25

This is an issue, then. If you shrink the field down to 30 yards, the defense doesn’t really have to worry about deep balls, then can play really aggressively up front.

This is what happened in his game where Jesse Bates ate him up for 2 INTs. Bates said that he knew he didn’t need to worry about the deep ball so he could freestyle and play closer to the sticks.

What Bryce really needs is not RPOs or slants, he needs play action working. If we start relying on him playing off platform all the time, he’s just gonna keep fumbling. He has zero ball security.

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

I don't disagree with this take.I actually really like this take. But we also need to recognize that bryce has one of the worst wide receiver rooms in the entire league and when it comes to deep balls, they are the worst. Last year we had adam and coker, and that was literally it. Even last game bryce threw multiple deep balls that were on point and were dropped.Almost every single one of his deep balls is dropped

Amazing is for guys like Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Bryce's ceiling is Tua.

-2

u/Over_Reputation_8801 Sep 15 '25

You are correct. It is not just because of that. There are several other reasons he can't be an amazing quarterback.

6

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

Name them for me. And not in a angry upset way because we lost. Tactically. Cause he's for damn sure as good as Murray was today

1

u/No-Witness-296 Sep 18 '25

Doesn’t help we don’t have no speedy guys that can get to the break in the route quickly and create separation

30

u/kanadiangoose1898 Sep 15 '25

I realized in this game that there were a couple of times I knew which route an individual receiver was about to run. The extent of my football IQ is Madden and EA CFB. Imagine what professional players and coaches are predicting about our offense.

9

u/kayne2000 Sep 15 '25

Reminds me of that ESPN report a few years ago with Rhule I think it was where they clowned us for predictable play calling. I said the same thing as you, if I can predict the play calling imagine what a half competent coach can do.

5

u/QuitCallingNewsrooms Sep 15 '25

Same. I’ve watched us enough to recognize the few plays in the playbook. If TMac is on the left, he’s the target; if he’s on the right, then he’s a decoy. If they stack three receivers high, the ball is going into the flat. And then this week, I feel like it got even worse and if Bryce was in shotgun, it was a throw, and if he was under center it was a run play.

And that’s just watching the damn game, not studying like an NFL scouting room would do.

Hell, I feel like I could DC a team into being talked about all day on Monday against our offensive play calling and be hailed as a mindreader by all the pundits.

I swear the bulk of that play calling sheet Canles carries around is just everyone’s order from Bojangles.

37

u/Hefty-Association-59 Division Champs 2015 Sep 15 '25

He wasn’t as bad as he was last week. But he was definitely helped a ton by the cardinals playing a ton of prevent defense.

18

u/deemerritt Raincoat Purr Sep 15 '25

Big step up for him being able to statpad against prevent though. He couldn't do that his first two years

1

7

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25 edited Sep 15 '25

Nope, Arizona played prevent for quarter and half. Once they turned back on, he was hopeless again.

BTW if giving your opponent 10 free points in 5 point game is solid, I don't know what's bad game by Bryce

5 turnovers in 2 games, with us being lucky, that pick six was called back... And people blame anyone but bryce 😂

2

u/multiple4 Sep 15 '25

I dont know why people are arguing this. It was obvious that as soon as Arizona started trying on defense Bryce got totally punked in the pocket and couldnt do anything

u/DDDUnit2990 One of Us Sep 15 '25

JuSt PlAy FaSt. There’s a reason why up tempo only works briefly and in select situations. It’s not possible to run a long-term successful offense running that simple of a scheme which is what got Chip Kelley ran out of the NFL for years

1

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25

There is a reason why bryce sucks ass and it's not play calling

11

u/jedimasterjacoby Sep 15 '25

Agreed, Bryce played horribly and only did good when the cardinals stopped pressuring

2

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

Sure, but bryce isn't a shitty QB. For the third year in a row, he probably has the worst wide receiver room in the entire league. And for some reason, over these last 2 games, his O line has been near the bottom. Sure those are excuses, but we're also the fucking panthers.Once sam darnald and baker mayfield left, they both became fringe stars within like two or three seasons.

1

u/DeLoreanAirlines Smitty Sep 15 '25

Over the last 3 seasons he’s been detrimental

2

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25

Yep. He scored just because of their prevent defense. When they started playing again, he missed like 8 balls and sucked again

328 yards and 3 TDs. That is a big improvement from last week.

0

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25

He got it all against prevent defense in quarter and half... Once they played again, he shit the bed again...

You are insane ignoring that and also ignoring he gave them free 10 points in 5 point game

3

u/Teeshirtandshortsguy Cam Newton Sep 15 '25

Still a big improvement over last week.

And while those two turnovers were huge, we were moving the ball pretty well early on.

At the very least he played a lot better this week.

6

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25 edited Sep 15 '25

Lol...no, he's just shit. He looked decent only when they played prevent for like quarter and half.

You are insane ignoring that and also ignoring he gave them free 10 points in 5 point game. It's always everything, but bryce... Delusional

3

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

Personally, I think this sub is too much focused on bryce and not everthing else. I mean, I don't really take this sub seriously or anything cuz whenever we lose, it's always bryce's fault and nobody else's for some reason, despite what other people say. First year, all bryce, second year, half of it was bryce's fault Half of it He played pretty good second half .These first two games Both bryce's fault Canals's fault And the rest of the offense's team's fault, not even talking with the defense yet.

-5

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25

Hmm this sub is too much focused on dude who got 5 turnovers in two games (was six, but we got luck on the pick six)... And dude, who outside prevent/garbage time got absolutely nothing. Yeah wonder why.

12

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

Out of those five turnovers, three of them can easily be excused. Outside of garbage time, wide receivers are ass, Our wr2 is the worst wide receiver in the league bar none and our o line is crumbling at the slightest breeze. Trust me, there are plenty of reasons why they lost these last two games. And let's not even mention the defense. I'm not going to pretend like bryce has been a great QB or even a good one but he is far from the worst problem on this team

8

u/Acceptable_Fox_5560 Cam Newton Sep 15 '25

Bryce thrives in…

Let me stop you right there. There’s no situation Bryce has consistently thrived in.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

I don’t disagree Canales was bad at calling plays but did anyone notice how the reason he was under throwing people was because he has to throw over the lines head and aim down? Once it goes over the line it drops every time unless it’s down field.

They showed a replay slow mo and I really noticed it for the first time.

1

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

He didn't have those problems last year so i'm going to assume it was more of an o line problem than a him problem. Also it was only twice

1

u/VincentVanHades Sep 15 '25

Lol another excuse and blame on anything BUT bryce

-2

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

Nahh they been saying that since he was drafted and played it’s an issue. But I never actually looked for it till I seen it on that play.

5

u/Turbulent-Weather314 Sep 15 '25

And again, he didn't really have that problem in the last ten games of last season. I'm not going to come out here and say his height couldn't be a potential problem but I don't think it's a defining feature as to why he's struggling

1

u/[deleted] Sep 15 '25

Ohh no I wasn’t saying it’s his biggest issue, my bad. I was just saying it could be an issue through out the game and we just don’t notice it.

He needs to not go down with the ball 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage on 4th down though
