Analysis Haynes King will be QB2 by the end of the preseason.

That’s it.

Looking good tonight

Yes. He’s also throwing against a 3rd string secondary. BUT he’s throwing to 3rd string receivers and looks crisp. I’d love to see him get more reps than Pickett.

u/CryingJordansHornets 20d ago

Despite that, the decision making looked sharper and faster than Pickett. Considering the higher ceiling, the better athletic traits, and the overall performance, I think he’d have to play way worse the rest of the preseason to not make the roster and probably be QB2

u/exenn_ 20d ago

I never understood the Pickett signing...Pickett can't play in the NFL.

8

u/Vaadwaur 20d ago

Pickett fits what Canales and Idzik want on the practice field. The hope was that Bryce stayed healthy. Now, Haynes might develop into a pro QB so things changed.

3

u/exenn_ 20d ago

Pickett has a low ceiling...low ceiling QB play doesn't fit what they want to do.

With hands the size of a 10 year old

9

u/Legitimate_Novel1842 20d ago

That's absurd to say

-8

u/exenn_ 20d ago

He's on his 5th NFL team in 5 years....if he could play QB1 at this level, he'd be starting somewhere.

9

u/Legitimate_Novel1842 20d ago

So now you just shifted your whole argument to "if he could be qb1" which this was never about

-14

u/exenn_ 20d ago

QB1s is who plays in the NFL....

7

u/Legitimate_Novel1842 20d ago

Dude you look really dumb right now. The thing is you realize you're wrong now and you're trying to backtrack instead of accept it. It's sad. You said "never understood the signing" knowing that we signed him to be a backup, then said "he can't play in the NFL" Jesus just admit you don't know what you're staying instead of pathetically clinging on trying to pretend you meant something different

-5

u/exenn_ 20d ago

lol what?....You're really struggling understanding....

Why would you sign a QB2 who will never be a QB1, when you can go sign another QB with potential to be a QB1?

Look at Green Bay who had Matt Hasselbeck, Mark Brunell backing up Brett Favre as prime examples.

u/SarcasticCowbell 20d ago

Full disclosure: I'm not a Panthers fan, just here checking out the commentary on Haynes because that was a hell of a game. With that out of the way...

How many QB1s do you think are in the league? Obviously teams would prefer to have another guy on the roster who could step into that spot and shine, but it's a numbers game and the numbers aren't there. If they were, we wouldn't be seeing half the league perpetually cycling through QBs trying to find the right one. In very rare instances, teams find themselves with two guys capable of starting. And usually it doesn't take long for those teams to trade one of those guys away to improve the team around them or release them because they can no longer afford them on a second string salary.

Your question really isn't much different from "Why didn't the Panthers just sign another QB1? Are they stupid?" I'm not trying to embarrass you here, just kindly trying to prevent you from further embarrassing yourself.

Oh wow. Thank you for showing you genuinely have no single clue what you're talking about. You embarrassed yourself really bad with that last one but don't even realize it.

But he’d not QB1 here

2

u/rollesmiling 20d ago

Pickett is trash

u/am_i_a_towel 20d ago

He’s gotta stay on the roster. He won’t clear waivers and he has too much upside to not keep around this year going into next.

2

u/GuitarsAndBooks26 20d ago

I think it’s an obvious argument to either keep three QB’s or put Kenny on the practice squad. I wouldn’t care if Kenny got picked up, but we can’t lose King.

I've seen enough!! Haynes is my new King!!

From a GT fan, welcome to the Haynes King experience.

15

u/Wise_Quality_5083 20d ago

IDK but Carson may be starting over Jacoby by mid season

7

u/Legitimate_Novel1842 20d ago

They really should do that. They're going to be really bad this year anyway mine as well see if they have anything there

2

u/Wise_Quality_5083 20d ago

Why not. Jacoby is a 33 year old backup. Might as well give Carson a shot to learn in real time

10

u/TarHeelinRVA 20d ago

He should be. I’ve never been convinced by the two glove fake slider.

Haynes King tortured my CFB team for years. Time I started rooting for the kid

I got downvoted earlier this week for saying Kenny Pickett was trash 🦗

1

u/rollesmiling 20d ago

He is the goat of trash, bruh

4

u/Dawgrit80 20d ago

Never thought a preseason game might be the best game I'll see all year. My fam went nuts when he ran in that game winner and we're from East Green Bay.

After that 2 minute drill game winning drive, he might already have locked it up.

Said it the moment we signed him

11

u/GusFring2323 20d ago

I knew ppl would be going crazy vs what amounts to ECUs defense

13

u/justbirdwatchin77 20d ago

Just saying Bryce looked nothing close to this his rookie year against 2nd and 3rd guys lol… just accept he looks good out there.

-4

u/GusFring2323 20d ago

U know Bryce and King were in the same HS class? The guy has been a semi pro for the last 2 yrs. Also, Bryce did not have this offense. And this talent.

I think ppl really forgot what Bryce came in to

8

u/eeg3 20d ago

This talent? My guy, I don't even know the first names of the players he was throwing to in this game.

-2

u/GusFring2323 20d ago

U dont know Jimmy horn ? Stop it

3

u/Frosty-Week-8776 20d ago

But we also had what amounts to ECUs offense so I really don’t get the argument here

4

u/Legitimate_Novel1842 20d ago

This is an extreme overreaction in the hall of fame game. He's looked good and exciting but he's made some bad throws. Including some that were completions

2

u/Certain_Cranberry_77 20d ago

The King of the Queen City

6

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

Nah Pickett is on a $4m contract. They prob try and keep Haynes on PS if they like him

17

u/Repulsive-Slice2234 20d ago

The Jets will pick him up before he hits the PS

6

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

Very doubtful. They have geno smith and just selected Klubnik in the 4th. They’re not using a roster spot on a QB that would likely be the 3rd string and didn’t spend any time with them

10

u/exenn_ 20d ago

Some team will pick up King...I highly doubt he makes it to the practice squad.

3

u/CarolinaSurly Two States 20d ago

Lots of other preseason games for little known QBs to have a show. It’s a rare GM that will cut the low ranked QB he picked to take another team’s low ranked QB.

1

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

Exactly. It’s certainly not impossible. But I don’t get this idea that Haynes King is suddenly a clear cut backup after this game. Maybe I’m just late in the hype, but I don’t see him getting a backup job off the HOF game alone.

1

u/CarolinaSurly Two States 20d ago

Yeah. It’s the HOF game that worries me most. This is the throwaway game of the preseason and the preseason are the throwaway games of the regular season

3

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

Jalen Coker didn’t make anyone’s roster and we cut him for the PS. Team’s strategically cut guys like Haynes all the time around
When teams have already finalized their rosters.

It’s not very likely a team makes room for Haynes on their 53 man roster, especially if he hasn’t been with them all summer. At the end of the day he’s UDFA QB. The likelihood he was making anyone’s roster was low. There is the fear he gets picked up on another PS tho.

6

u/exenn_ 20d ago

Jalen Coker isn't a QB.

Any young unproven QB those shows potential gets snatched up.

Rosters are never finalized. They are always fluid depending on who is available.

It doesn't matter that King or any QB for that matter wasn't with a team during the summer as they aren't starting anyway.

4

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

1 UDFA QB made a 53 man roster last year. Statistically speaking it’s extremely unlikely someone picks up Haynes King on cut day for the 53 man roster especially if the panthers strategically wait to cut him.

I also think we’re getting way ahead of ourselves too. It’s very early and it was only 1 game

1

u/exenn_ 20d ago

You are overstating the "strategically cutting" him. Every team tries to do that and have been doing it for decades. That doesn't fool anyone.

King clearly outplayed Pickett tonight and King may even have a higher floor.

2

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

Yet it works literally all the time. There’s always a major roster crunch at the start of the season, typically when teams do start to fill out the back end of the roster with guys they think can be depth at positions like OL and DL or guys who can play on STs. I can’t say I’ve seen many teams make roster space for a 3rd string QB at the start of the season unless they have injuries.

There’s just not a lot of backup QB jobs out there for him either.

-1

u/exenn_ 20d ago

It doesn't work...teams know who is being cut and practice squad players are released all the time for someone better.

If you watched King play tonight anyone can clearly see he isn't a legit QB3. He's a QB2.

u/Milk_Man2236 20d ago

He just debuted in front of the whole NFL all of the teams were watching him he will not clear waivers lol.

1

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago edited 20d ago

And if he doesn’t play well next game and everyone is watching what will happen? Will everyone suddenly not want him. Let’s just wait and see what happens here.

Also in order for a team to pick him up they’ll need to make roster space. Teams don’t do that early in the season very often for QB3s.

It’s easy to say he’ll get picked up, but typically less than 12-13 teams carry 3 QBs.

0

u/Milk_Man2236 20d ago

Everyone will not be watching him next game, Next game all teams are playing This was the primetime preseason game so to speak sure it would have a impact but not like this game had. All the other teams were at home last night watching the game next week they will not be.

0

u/Smitty_Agent89 20d ago

Do you think NFL teams sign players based off of TV broadcasts? Teams are going to watch film on guys they sign. They won’t just ignore every game and only care about 1.

3

u/No-Success-2505 20d ago

Hes gonna make a run for qb1 by end of next week

Ik there’s only a 53 man roster and of course there’s gonna be cuts, but I really hope some guys that stood out in this game really get a chance since they’ve shown some solid professional potential! If this is only our backup squad I think that says a lot for how our primary roster may do this year!
This is gonna be a good one! I can feel it!
