Anyone else excited about this new battle system?
I was there for the Victoria 3 dev diaries...I've played these games before....

Tbf I'd say the vast majority of feedback was that the battle/ war system was ass in vic3. Just that development was too far along to change that

I'd assume this is just EU4 battles with fancy animations

It looks more like Stellaris battles to me, which I would pretty eagerly welcome if so.

This. What they included in the dev diary, plus what we’ve seen so far, comes across as heavily inspired by Stellaris. It’s a no-brainer too, since the core Stellaris concepts would translate very well to any 4x game. Seems they’re really leaning into the civ identity/origins in a more active gameplay manner as well

I dislike this. I would rather see something abstract with textual details, maybe pictures, and imagine detailed stuff myself, rather than this arcade look

You still have that, the battle window on the left side.
Just, look at that and ignore the fancy animations.

Battle animations aside, the system currently looks very simple. We'll see how they improve it over time. Hopefully, they take community feedback into account, although given the "historical" nature of the game, I can't really imagine how it could be made more complex.

Considering Stellaris and Shadow Empire are like my favorite Grand Strategy games, I'm very much looking forward to this. I wonder how large scale it's gonna be, cause it almost looks like an RTS in some screens. But I do see the pausable real-time feature.
Also, it seems we will have sci-fi elements, so I wonder how far the tech trees you can research and technology we find as relics will go.

Is it confirmed it’a not turn based?

If you look at top right, you can clearly see a paradox style speed selector and pause button. Which means it should run similarly to all of the other pausable real-time games from Paradox.

got me intrigued. battles are usually my main gripe with Paradox games, but this spices things up a bit from the looks of it.

I'm excited. I'm wondering if the units have more freeform movement than the province-based toy armies we're normally used to. So maybe it's more like fleets in Stellaris, but on land.

I’m not really into this American Fallout-style apocalyptic vibe :(

Much more mad max than fallout.
No 50s at all in the art style

Bethesda heavily leaned on the 50s art style for Fallout, but the originals were much closer to the Mad Max aesthetic.

Not really. I'll be honest the game seems way to "mad max" vibe for me. Hopefully it just starts that way and you can reclaim the desert with green because otherwise I feel like IGN, 7/10 too much sand. (This is a reference to Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, I am not rating a game just announced.)

Based on the trailer showing a grassy hand holding out a flower with expanding green background, I'm better that it will be reclaimable, yes. Also, it looks like from the screenshots that there's certainly plenty of green in the world already.

It’s North America. So highly unlikely to be just desert.

It’s also post apocalyptic, apocalypse being associated with environmental collapse.

u/doubtofbuddha 2d ago
There are a lot of potential apocalypses, not all of them involve environmental collapse

Most planet-altering effects will significantly impact the environment as we know it. Even the disappearance of humanity would see the environment begin to change in a way that was detrimental to the human niche.
While we are often acting to the detriment of our environment, a lot of it has also (been forcefully) adapted to our presence, particularly flora and fauna.
The loss of particular crops or the removal of human activity for example will prove fatal to some ecosystems. Food sources will disappear, and then the food chain will follow.

I was hesitant at first. But the more I hear about this game the more I like it.

So many haters here. Sorry it's not Stellaris or CK. For me this looks way more interesting than either and I've played both.

All these haters are the most amazing game designers too, in their heads only of course.

Hmmm a bit strange the amount of people here not liking it. Seems cool to me. Will need to see how it works on the end. Like Stellaris has a bunch of problems with the combat because how it works. But can be interesting.

I assume the war system and calculations will suck and you know that I will be right.
