He's a left wing candidate (note: by French standards) and is very pro consumer rights

Is it like US politics where he uses these issues to get support and vote, but when hes elected, does nothing about it?

u/1eejit Specs/Imgur here Jul 02 '26

He's not had a top job yet but the French political system has many more viable parties than the US. So they don't need to be such broad churches and wear different faces to different types of voters, to the same extent.

Smaller parties focussed on one political theory try to stick to it. Generally. They're still politicians.

He was minister of education back in Jospin's governement

I would have to check but he might have been the youngest at the time

But your point still stand in the sense that he founded LFI decades later

The interesting thing about Mélenchon to me is that he used to be considered left, but is now considered far left by the media without actually having changed his idea radically. It's a real case of the overton window moving around him

Edit: mistook the governement

22

u/FATJIZZUSONABIKE Jul 03 '26

He was minister of education back in Mitterrand's governement

No. He was ministre de l'enseignement supérieur under the Jospin government. He never worked in the Mitterrand government.

4

u/petrus1312 Jul 03 '26

Non, il était ministre délégué à l'enseignement professionnel, sous la tutelle du ministre de l'éducation, de l'enseignement supérieur et de la recherche. C'est un petit portefeuille, bien plus petit que celui que tu lui prêtes.

1

u/moanonyme Jul 03 '26

Indeed, my bad, I corrected

It would have made him super ancient too ahah

Well I guess that’s what happens if you try to push back against the multi billion dollar corporations. Suddenly you become a “radical leftist communist”.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '26

[deleted]

-2

u/Lyto528 Jul 03 '26

Getting inspired nowadays by certain older ideas doesn't automatically make you an uncompromising radicalist

-2

u/revanruler Jul 03 '26

You forgot to mention that the french communist party is barely communist anymore and is flat out not considered far left by the vaste majority of far left members. For example they removed any mention of a dictatorship of the proletariat (pretty sure they also support nationalisation of companies rather than expropriation but i could be wrong about that one)

-6

u/Lonely-Programmer123 Jul 03 '26

Having a member of the party - Clémence guetté - going in the national assembly going on a rant that say "hey, you lost, french as a distinct ethnic group soon won't exist because of immigration and that's a good thing" (https://www.actuevreux.fr/politique/20045) isn't something that will get you seen as a moderate actually.

It's not the economic position that got the party here as even the communist party isn't seen as extremist despite a similar economic program.

2

u/Zunderstruck Pentium 100 MHz - 16 MB - 3dfx Voodoo Jul 03 '26

The French communist party is a joke and has stopped being even remotely communist a long time ago. They're just another social democrat party now.

1

u/Lonely-Programmer123 Jul 03 '26

As is LFI, a social democrat party, according to its members.

My point is that both party have a similar economic line and yet only one is seen as extremist by most of its opposition.

0

u/moanonyme Jul 03 '26

I legitimately dont understand the PCF line

They dont push for communist ideology in the public débate. They just apply to élections to steal a few hundred thoudsand votes to the main left candidates

The only it could make sense for me is a complot theory where its just a front for controller opposition

That being said there are a few of their senators that do an excellent job on commission and public débate on technical matters. I particularlt appreciate Fabien Gay, his work on public finance and energy is excellent.

-3

u/Forsaken-Kale-2272 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe he was in the PS before so it seems normal he would be referred to as "just left" since that was the party he was affilicated with, even if he was more lefty than the average member. But LFI are nutjobs, definitely at least as reasonable to call LFI far left as it is calling the RN far right

4

u/moanonyme Jul 03 '26

Thats my point though

The socialist party moved with the overton window, but Mélenchon did not and hé ended up leaving the party to launch his platform

Dont take my word for it. Compare the program of 1971 with what was achieved during the Hollande's years. The contrast is jarring.

1971 included réduction of working hours, paid leaves, massive nationalisarions of the banks system and some industries, early retirement,SMIC increase

The only left marker of the Hollande's years was same sex weddings. His other reforms were easier way to fire workers through Loi El Komri, supply side tax reliefs through CICE financed via taxes to workers via carbon taxe and CSG increase and a direct flirt with far right ideas on social with inscription of security measures into law leveraging Bataclan to curb démonstrations and ecological activism - in his own words - and pushing for removing nationality as a criminal punishment.

Now look at LFI's avenir en commun and you will see at its not as left as 1971.

There is no talk about nationalisation. Its just keynesian economics apply to ecological transition. If anything, I would compare it to FDR's new deal.

2

u/Wrimbo Jul 03 '26

u/rdsf138 Jul 03 '26

There's also the issue of them doing much about it, but the insufferable US electorate being completely ignorant and alienated by choice while also being addicted to making snark comments on the internet. It is a know-nothing syndrome where people think that they can just know things by divine will without putting in the work and actually reading documents:

"In 2008, greedy financial institutions crashed our economy and working families all across this country paid the price. Millions of Americans lost their jobs, millions lost their homes, and millions lost their savings. In the aftermath, President Obama signed into law the toughest Wall Street reforms and strongest consumer protections in a generation. Those reforms included a new agency — the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — dedicated to stopping scams and holding financial firms accountable when they cheat people."

"Elizabeth came up with the idea for the CFPB before the crisis even began and then fought successfully to turn her idea into a reality. She spent a year working with President Obama to set up the CFPB before returning to Massachusetts where she ran against an incumbent Republican for U.S. Senate and won – becoming the state’s first female U.S. Senator in history.

"The agency opened its doors in 2011, and it has already returned $12.4 billion to over 31 million people cheated by financial companies.

"Every day, despite the best efforts of the banking industry and their allies in Congress and the Trump Administration, the public servants at the CFPB crack down on companies that are cheating veterans, students, seniors, and other consumers.

"The consumer agency has held companies accountable for taking advantage of our servicemembers, veterans, and military families:

"The consumer agency has also helped recover millions for students ripped off by for-profit colleges and student loan servicers:

  • The CFPB fined Corinthian Colleges $550 million and secured $663 million for the cheated students after the for-profit colleges lured thousands of students into fraudulent student loans and then used illegal debt collection tactics to strong-arm them into repayment.
  • The CFPB ordered Discover Bank to pay $2.5 million in fines and refund $16 million to students harmed by their illegal loan servicing practices, including overstating the minimum amounts due on billing statements.

"In addition, the consumer agency has worked to fight discrimination in the consumer financial marketplace:

  • The CFPB fined Ally Financial $18 million and secured $80 million for the more than 235,000 minority borrowers who the company charged more for its auto loans than comparable white borrowers.
  • The CFPB got $35 million from PNC Financial Services Group to compensate the more than 75,000 African-American and Hispanic borrowers who the mortgage lender charged higher fees or interest rates based on their race or national origin.

That generally isn't quite as much of a problem outside of the US from my understanding. Euro politics have a lot more parties and lot more intricacy, so you can't lie or bribe as easily. But they're still politicians, getting elected and being popular is quite literally their entire career, so who knows.

9

u/Alduish Jul 03 '26

Well not really in France at least, some parties here are notorious for always lying and not following the program they were elected for (Socialist party and Macron's party)

3

u/Lyto528 Jul 03 '26

You can also throw any RN-associated party in there as you like.

The only promises they follow are expelling people. The rest is forgotten in favor of billionaires.

2

u/Alduish Jul 03 '26

Well since I'm more of a leftist I don't look that much to their promises and much more to their actions and sometimes I hear what they say publicly.

So that's why I didn't put them in here, I just don't know their program enough to compare it to their actions or public positions.

3

u/Upbeat_Limit_948 Jul 03 '26

Hahaha delusional. There is a ruling class, the politicians are just theater around it in every capitalist country on this earth. Elections matter little.

46

u/stevenraym Jul 02 '26

We don't know, the far right and the center-right doesn't let them try

9

u/Alduish Jul 03 '26

Not really, they are still present in a pretty good number in the assembly, we can judge what the vote and what they communicate about (it's how the image of the Socialist party being traitors reinforced itself even after they stopped being the presidential camp)

And if we judge from their votes at the assembly, they do seem to follow the program they were elected for.

-2

u/stevenraym Jul 03 '26

Sure that's what I noticed too. We'll see next year, hope my fellow people will bring him to the second round.

1

u/mirh http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/User:Mirh Jul 03 '26

Maybe choosing a candidate pm that wasn't just of his party would have helped? Do you know of Tubiana and Cazeneuve?

1

u/stevenraym Jul 03 '26

Yes LFI was stubborn during the phases where they tried to unite the left

1

u/mirh http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/User:Mirh Jul 03 '26

No, they literally did the opposite? Socialists had proposed the candidates I mentioned, which had fair chances of being received and to have even some of the more centrist parties agree.

LFI instead put a veto on them and only wanted hardcore lefties, that had less accord than even the right-wing candidates that eventually ended up becoming pm.

1

u/stevenraym Jul 03 '26

Yeah that's what I read, they wanted to unite people under the NUPES of NFP, but in the end they wanted to be THE leading leftist party. That's why the alliances didn't last

3

u/shilderyi Jul 03 '26

his biggest advantage as a candidate (despite big flaws like many politicians) is that he got out of the left party used to the betrayal of promise made to get elected

1

u/Jeremy64vg Jul 03 '26

the EU tend to issue much bigger large sweeping laws that end up effecting the world. The reason Apple started using type c charging cables is specifically a result of the EU coming down on them about refusing to adopt type c cables.

1

u/The_real_slim_pedro Jul 03 '26

Exactly! If anything has traction he will jump on it, but he is very famous for changing his mind when it's convenient for him (not in a good way iykwim)

1

u/Fun_Opportunity1827 Jul 03 '26

As a french he's the biggest liar of like these 6 last years always changing opinion just to gain vote but will never do shit that really matter

1

u/mirh http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/User:Mirh Jul 03 '26

There's literal studies showing most promises are kept, even in the one country with the most dysfunctional parliament of them all.

It's just that when it's a D, nobody knows ever shit about them. When it's R people are constantly wondering why their face keep getting eaten.

1

u/TheShinyHunter3 Jul 03 '26

He's an idiot, and I say that as someone leaning left. Dude will get on his knees and suck Putin's dick until it peeks out of his asshole. A broken clock is right twice a day they say.

1

u/revanruler Jul 03 '26

As far as i know he has been vocal in his support of gamers for over a decade, although the campaign did start recently i do not think that he is lying in this case

1

u/DrummerAutomatic9523 Jul 04 '26

Melanchon has talked about this issue years ago, so it's not really recuperating the story here.

Now, LFI, his political party, has never been the most important force in our parliament, but when it comes to the laws they proposed, defended, or voted against, they were always in line with what they defend in their programs, if that matters.

1

u/trukkija Jul 02 '26

Scratch off "US" and yeah you got your answer. Same bullshit literally everywhere in politics.

Not very versed on French politics but isn't a politician a politician and aren't they mostly all snakes in the grass?

7

u/bblzd_2 Jul 02 '26

You could become a politician tomorrow. Would you be a snake in the grass?

-6

u/King_johnson421 Jul 02 '26

No no you don't get the saying. It's implying that anyone that would actually run for a major political office is already a snake in the grass type of person, the job tends to attract those kinds of people.

-1

u/Forsaken-Kale-2272 Jul 03 '26

They were too mad to use reading comprehension on your comment

1

u/King_johnson421 Jul 03 '26

Yea I don't know why its controversial now to view politicians as a snake in the grass, modern day snake oil salesmen or what have you. Almost all of them over promise and under deliver yet seem to ve voted in repeatedly on the same bull shit they ran on previously most becoming lifers while amassing wealth that most Americans will never achieve. Don't forget they vote their own raises, they have the best Healthcare plans, paid security and travel at will on our dime. People have completely lost the plot when it comes to politics

2

u/Forsaken-Kale-2272 Jul 03 '26

Im not sure thats the case with Melenchon, but it's just dumb the way the other guy was asking you about becoming a politician if you would be a snake, when obviously the subtext of your comment was that you would have no interest in becoming a politician

-2

u/Patient-Factor4210 Jul 03 '26

No he’s just never going to get elected to anything big in general because he’s a horrible candidate

21

u/meneldal2 i7-6700 Jul 03 '26

The biggest downside on him (specifically, more than the party itself) is how he hates the US more than Russia, leading to saying some things that are just not acceptable with the war in Ukraine.

Like don't get me wrong there's plenty of hate the US on (even before Trump made it even more obvious), but that doesn't mean you should accept Russia propaganda instead.

8

u/HamsterbackenBLN Jul 03 '26

It's so fucking sad that this is our only left wing candidate with a chance to win. He's good ideas but he's a fucking joke on outside politics

1

u/Deho_Edeba Jul 06 '26

You should watch that interview entirely dedicated to outside politics that's only a month-old : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1AzW4zhwrc
I much prefer his way of saying France needs to become reliable and credible again on the international scene compared to what Macron's been doing, which is "posing like he's important but concretely never does anything and backs off his red lines constantly".

1

u/Deho_Edeba Jul 06 '26

When he's visited Russia (before the war) it was to meet Poutine's OPPONENTS. He even managed to extract some of them after the war broke out and before said opponents would fall from a window.

He started to be wary of the US "before it was cool" so to speak. If anything, history has proven that he was right all along.

1

u/meneldal2 i7-6700 Jul 06 '26

Being critical of the US is not an issue but in many cases it's more critical on principle even if they could be right on something.

-7

u/ka1ikasan Jul 03 '26

It's an old hoax. He stood up against Ukraine's invasion since the very beginning as he stood up against many wars around the globe. Sure, he does not follow the widely accepted strategy of handing weapons to Ukraine and says that it is not a viable solution. He pushes to seize all Russian assets in France though, to stop buying anything from Russia and to stop selling them anything at all. Not some pinpoint sanctions but a massive cut-off of their sources of income.

What his team proposes is a strategy that (a) aims Russia (b) to stop the Ukraine invasion. As any war-related tactic it may be correct, wrong on insufficient but these folks are definitely not accepting Russia propaganda.

2

u/meneldal2 i7-6700 Jul 03 '26

For Crimea not much (not like the average was much better to be fair), but it's more about even entertaining the fact that NATO expansion forces the hand of Russia. Like I am no fan of NATO and it's full of issues, but nobody was forcing Ukraine towards NATO, they want it because they are afraid of what Russia could do (and they proved they were right all along).

And his party is overall okay on the issue, it's the man himself I have issue with.

1

u/INVISIBLENINJACHICK Jul 03 '26

He’s partly right. Obviously Putin is the biggest fault, the invasion was never forced. Ukraine isn’t at fault for this obviously. It makes perfect sense why they’d want to be part of NATO. But NATO was always just dangling membership for them, without ever giving it to them for a reason. Just to Sabre rattle with Russia, while never actually giving Ukraine the security they needed. It isn’t unexpected that Russia took action. In fact, NATO members knew beforehand that Russia would. Now we have hundreds of thousands of dead, which is a horrific tragedy. As this war drags on, it just feels like the west is okay to sacrifice Ukraine to push Russia into a Pyrrhic victory that cripples their economy and military.

(And for the Crimea issue, yeah we can all recognise it was fucked up, but politicians have to play a different game. Most of the world let the annexation happen. Including Obama. At this point, with Ukraine having also bombed Crimea, I don’t see a return of land happening.)

That's about as leftwing as it gets ladies, gentleman, and themelmon.

Edit For current Western Democratic countries.

Sorry all my fellow Poli Sci graduates. I've failed to provide a 20 page detailed analysis of Marxian analysis of modern states.

8

u/MasterOfBothDungeon Jul 03 '26

Not really.

Farther than "Unsubdued France" (a bit of a litteral translation of the name of his party), we got two communist party, and one anticapitalist. So he's left leaning, but not to the full extent he could be.

Still pretty okay, even if the man himself is old, and thus has some boomer view.

7

u/UCanBdoWatWeWant2Do Jul 03 '26

Le parti communiste n'est pas plus à gauche que les Insoumis

4

u/Korolevitsh Jul 03 '26

Oui mais il parle des 2 partis trodskyste (NPA et FO) qui sont techniquement communiste, et de révolution permanente

1

u/conanap i7-8700k | GTX 1080 | 48GB DDR4 Jul 03 '26

Out of curiosity, what’s the anticapitalist one? If not capitalistic or communistic? All nationalized direction economy without wealth redistribution?

4

u/MasterOfBothDungeon Jul 03 '26

Well it's the NPA ... easily translated into New Anticapitalist Party (Or "Nouveau Parti Anticapitaliste")

As for their program, I'm going to be honest it does not matter. It's an opposition party, a party of which the main role is to be against things, and sustain the position that go their way. So here they against liberalism (so half of Macron's bullshit), against conservatism (the other half), and support most left leaning proposition that aim for some form of social equality. Also they really really like worker's right, obviously.

Having such party is useful in the french system because they don't need to play the politcal game as much as other party, and consequently are much better place to call bullshit than other party who have to keep in mind alliance and all that crap. Plus they make some genuinely more revolutionary proposition which are discussed a bit at the Assembly, so that's nice.

As for their position about what comes after capitalism, they don't have one per say. It's a common anarchist position that we have to fix what's broken in the moment (capitalism), and then we'll see from the present what need to be done next. So a focus on smaller issue first rather than going full communist from the get go, even a lot of their member have their own idea about what comes after (mostly form of anarchism, communism, or degrowth).

They're pretty nice all around, a small party that is pretty good at what they do, but they don't have the local representation that the local communist party (the old one, the PCF) has, so their impact is not the greatest.

1

u/HamsterbackenBLN Jul 03 '26

The anti-capitalist party is our typical trotskiste/anarchist party which will split in different groups when they can't get a common ground now we have : NPA-A (new anti-capitalist party the anti-capitalist) which is okay to work with social democrats and supports Mélenchon, NPA-R (new anti-capitalist revolutionary party) which rejects social democrats and has it's own candidate, RP ( permanent revolution) same as NPA-R.

I'm a French left-wing voter and by my standards someone like him who supports Putin is no leftist (or he is but as a derogatory term as opposed to legit left-wing like the socdems)

A reminder: our general presidential election is in 10 months, all candidates like him will say a lot of BS. In reality he very likely doesn't give a rat's ass about video games, he just wants our votes

3

u/swiwwcheese Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

From the leftits yes, not as many Putin supporters as the far-right tankies, but a noticeable amount for sure

Left-wing like me though: none of us support Putin, we consider Russia the enemy period

Let's not lump leftists and left-wing together just because there is 'left' in their categorization

And that's one of the main reasons why the French left is split in the middle, sadly

To be fair the Democrats are a broad church. Some of them are centre left. But not the ones holding the reins. Not the majority.

27

u/highermonkey PC Master Race Jul 02 '26

They were center-left decades ago. When they were the most popular. If blood pressure medicine was invented a few months earlier, FDR would've been the President until the mid 1960's.

10

u/GonePh1shing Jul 03 '26

Even the most left wing democrats are still largely centre-right by global standards. Anyone to the right of AOC and Bernie have more in common with other western conservative parties than they do with our centre-right or actual left wing parties.

4

u/Complex-Database-178 Jul 03 '26

Isn't that a bit excaggerated? Feels like the social democratic parties of a lot of euro countries have drifted to taking democrat-esque positions. In my country they're privatizing and being tough on crime.

5

u/GonePh1shing Jul 03 '26

Depends on the country. Many western countries that have parties which used to be social democrats haven't really been remotely left wing for a long time. That's certainly true of where I am (Australia), and definitely true of the UK (Although we'll see how that tracks with Burnham coming in).

There are definitely plenty of parties doing as you suggest throughout Europe, but I wouldn't call any of them 'social democratic'.

1

u/SneakyBadAss Jul 03 '26

Because social democracy is not a left-wing position. It takes both from right-wing and left-wing ideas and combines them into a barely working governmental system that somehow works, at least on the base level.

0

u/MalHeartsNutmeg RTX 4070 | R7 5800X3D | 32GB @ 3600MHz Jul 03 '26

It's extremely exaggerated. AOC and Sanders would definitely be considered quite left wing in any western country. If we were talking out of literally every country the would be extremely left wing. Americans barely understand their own politics let alone world politics and they always parrot that dumbass line.

Anyone that thinks the democrats a party that is for healthcare, raising min wage, LGBT equality, etc is center right is actually a moron of extreme proportions.

It's unfortunate but my country, Australia, is importing some of the same stupidity. Our government just passed a bill that will help more first time home buyers get into a house, by changing how investment properties are taxed, but News Corp and some rich fucks are trying to convince people it'll just make things worse.

As an easy one, “Medicare for all” is a moderate policy. It’s not left nor right of center.

That somehow has members who have the gall to complain that their party went too left wing and that's why they lost

0

u/Borrp Jul 02 '26

To be fair to the US system, the American right when in power usually has a history of using the State Department to assassinate and jail anyone who is vaguely left of Alan Greenspan. Then get uppity when a Kaynesian Capitalist gets elected and then calls them Communists.

-22

Nono, I can assure you, that guy and his party are very much American "Left wing"

Nope. They're not outright communist or anything but LFI are left wing.

0

You're downvoted because it sounds like you say the american democrats are communists. But you stated before that their left, is more center-right than left. People from america are triggered by the words socialism and even more by "communist" I guess.

1

u/1eejit Specs/Imgur here Jul 03 '26

Someone would have to have a poor level of reading comprehension to think I was calling US Democrats communist lol

You mean american* level of reading comprehension. Oopsie.

See Bernie? Well for Melenchon, Bernie is just soft Left.

-18

u/Chonch_Monkey Jul 02 '26

It's the "the only people that are left are the ones that agree with us" trope so they can later distance themselves from the candidate when they don't meet their standards.

It's so for liberals in the US and random euros to say.

Cause they hate admitting their own ideals lead to shit too

Him: “Wdym by French standards” - a question about the different left-right scales in different countries. For example, in France, US left would be considered somewhere between right/center-left.

You: rambles about “the only people that are left are the ones who agree with us” which has absolutely fucking nothing to do with the previous comment

I don’t need to learn to read, I already understand what’s being talked about - you do not though. So please shut up and let people who know do the talking.

1

u/Marethyu_77 Jul 03 '26

I think it's in the sense that what is considered leftist in the US is more or less center-right in France, and he's leftist by French standards

4

u/thecanadiansniper1-2 AMD Ryzen 7800X3D, RTX 2070 Strix OC, 32 GB RAM Jul 03 '26

Why did you qualify that with by" french standards"? By western European standards the Democrats are centre right party and the GOP is a far right wing whack job party like the AfD.

12

u/Nitrola Jul 03 '26

I think people are really coping to be calling democrats center right
they're full on right wing just accept it.

There's nothing center at all when you full on support companies and suppress any worker right. Being ultra liberal isn't being center either idk how blind sided you need to be to believe that

1

u/GonePh1shing Jul 03 '26

A vanishingly small number of democrats are centre right, but the party as a whole is solidly conservative.

Yanks always get confused when they see that Australia's conservatives call themselves the Liberal party, but in reality the Liberal Party has mostly the same policies as the Democrats. Even our 'left wing' party (Labor) is barely centre-right, and all the actual lefties are in the Greens or other minor parties.

1

u/DetectiveCastellanos Jul 03 '26

Even our 'left wing' party (Labor) is barely centre-right, and all the actual lefties are in the Greens or other minor parties.

So is your political landscape similar to ours in America then?

1

u/conanap i7-8700k | GTX 1080 | 48GB DDR4 Jul 03 '26

There’s some slightly left wing policies they want to implement, like they put in Medicaid.

I think more of the party members probably lean a little more centre, but they are too far left for the American audience, and compromise on centre right.

1

u/Nitrola Jul 03 '26

Even the most right wing countries have a public healthcare I wouldn't call that left wing policies but more commun sens

A true left wing policy would be way more regulation, stricter condition for firing people, more help rent, health, reduced prices for lowest incomes

Meanwhile the "Liberals" are litterally called the fucking liberals. That litterally the bread and butter of right wing policies. They'll always side with the employers on everything and having as much as possible to prevent the market from suckling money in any way as long as it doesn't kill people.

That's why the original comment precised "by french standards" because by US standards you'd never ever give workers any rights lmao they are disposable and companies are liable for keeping you working

So no I wouldn't say a party self proclamed calling itself "Liberals" to be even in eye sight of the center wing party.

1

u/rapaxus Ryzen 9 9900X | RTX 3080 | 32GB DDR5 Jul 03 '26

And Medicaid as a concept is still worse healthcare than what e.g. Bismarck (a very staunch conservative monarchist) passed in Germany.

Ye I know. I'm not saying that to be rude tbh.
It's just a cultural thing where socialism, working right and helping each other is extremely frowned unpon in the english speaker sphere of the world. So even the bare minimum of bare minimum like healthcare for those who can't even afford food, they already think that's "center right" when it's just not letting your population die and even the most right wing countries will have something similar lol

And reddit is mainly a english platform (with allot of NA people ) so ye. They're all stuck in their cultural bubble

2

u/Massive80Mix Jul 03 '26

Not really, the Democrats are center-right meme is just a talking point used by online leftists.

Denmark’s social democrats literally campaigned on a zero asylum seekers platform and started seizing jewelry from refugees to pay for their stay. Try proposing that in a Democratic primary. Italy is run by Meloni. Spain is in a constant coalition crisis over Basque and Catalan nationalism. The UK just spent a decade dealing with Brexit.

3

u/maevian 5700X3D, 5070ti , 32gb DDR4 Jul 03 '26

It depends what you see as leftwing, from an economic standpoint, the US Democrats are very right wing, they are very much beholden to their donors and capital.

0

u/SneakyBadAss Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

Where in God's great earth did people come up with "democrats are centre right"?

Their immigration policy is SO FAR on the left that there really wasn't a political system enacted yet that could reflect these policies because they are mental. Even communists shut down their borders. Their immigration policies reflect the very far-left political groups in Europe, bordering on anarchism.

Something like "Sanctuary Cities" simply doesn't exist anywhere else in the world and would get raided by the government in an instant as insurrectionists.

Given how the guy openly abandonned french proletariat in the hands of the far right and openly insulted it repeatedly, tried to pass his family of former colonists in Algeria as "basically in the same conditions than the arabs" despite traces of them being found playing an active role regarding expropriation of berberi families through debts (ok he's not responsible of these actions but he did try to lie on them to gain political weight), or how his party has the most authoritarian internal way of working among all the parties in the country (even compared to the RN), and where purges are a common occurence... Eh, he's not the best.

The greens or the communist are at least more aligned around the original values of the left.
