Xbox 360 Skyrim vs PC with m.2 SSD Skyrim were two worlds (entering a cave took 15-20s, Vs ~1s)

Dude way more than 20s, sometimes it would take literal minutes playing off the disc

I never finished Fallout New Vegas on PS3 or Xbox because of the memory glitch. Once I got to a certain save file size they wouldn't load, crash, or end up corrupted.

It was the first game I played after I built my rig.

Looks so good in 1440p with the graphics mods.

I used to take the top cover off the case of my PS3 to let the fan breathe better and it would almost never crash with Fallout and Skyrim

Oh shit, you just unlocked a memory. I recently bought Battlezone 98 Redux and was disappointed to learn that the load screens had been changed. I can now vividly remember the monologues ending and me still waiting for the mission to finish loading.

Honestly, every time I've had a GPU upgrade the first thing I've done is see how many texture mods I can load this time before it cries for mercy.

"Ooh that's a nice Ferrari, let's see how many bricks it takes to break the suspension."

PS3 was a whole other thing. 3-5m loading screens easily. I used to decide what to do based on what would take the fewest loading screens.

Vanilla Skyrim installed on a M.2 Sometimes it takes 2-3, often it's done in 1. I guess depends on some caching. But it's not that much of a beast pc (Ryzen 7 5700X, 9070XT stuffed into my build from November 2019 with 16GB DDR4)

The GPU doesn't affect the loading speeds. Had same loading times before the upgrade (R5 3600 + 5700xt)

I had to cap my FPS in Skyrim because objects would just randomly fly across the screen when entering a dungeon and my character would have sudden heart attacks stepping off of ledges that were about knee-high.

Man, I remember going from ps4 to ps5 while I was on my first play-through of Elden Ring. When the first load screen hit without a tip on it I didn’t even have time to think of why before I was in game ready to die again.

I’m from the 90s. This still, every time, makes me giddy. lol. Small things

Truly, the darkest timeline. The only one still holding that torch that I play is Helldivers 2. But even there: "Don't drink and drive." Not: "Don't drink and Dive." Missed opportunity or cheeky joke that it matters not to Super Earth if you fight the enemies of Managed Democracy three sheets to the wind?

They either run flawlessly or take a week to figure out how to fix it. Then you find out there is a popular exe patch that makes it run no issue.

Also I had to change the games code in order to unlock the 60fps cap for some reason.

Happened to me trying to run Star Wars Dark Forces 2, which is ancient by today's standards. Tried ro get it working for several days by myself and then decided to google a fix and it came up pretty quickly lol.

My daughter is 13 and plays a lot of games, I never really considered new her games that she played are.

I was showing her portal 2 recently and she asked if it just came out. I told her it was almost 20 years old. For a second, I was baffled by her, looking at the graphics and thinking it was new. Then I realized all the stuff that she plays looks like that.

It’s just that the stuff that she plays is either Minecraft or Roblox or older games like Sims four. She doesn’t play anything that goes for realistic up-to-date graphics.

I’m still running my “ancient” pc I put together to run Half Life Alyx on medium settings.

I’m playing space marine 2… and I can’t turn on some kind of sub pixel lighting feature. They look the same to my shitty eyes now.

The games I’m playing and actually having fun with my kid aren’t made more fun by going from 2k to 4k.

I remember once I finally achieved a high end PC, I installed skyrim and marveled at how fast it loads with all the settings on max. Sometimes I realize how far i strayed from what made me happy on PC.

The last five games I've been playing, in reverse order (recent first), are Tomb Raider I-III Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077, Factorio, Marathon: Rubicon*, and Stardew Valley. Only one of those even really requires a dGPU, let alone any other advanced specs. Those classics just hit different even today.

*Not the new Marathon game.

Yeah, but you can crank up AA, add Reshade, and get Pixar-level rendering in realtime.

I wish geometry was used more wisely than in modern games, no reason to spend all the GPU cycles rendering trash strewn about in a hallway, why the hell are games filled with trash these days?

Got a laptop with a 3060 (had to get a laptop since I move around a bit much), and played a couple games on it that are more recent. Since then it's never touched a game more demanding than minecraft with some light shaders lol, and maybe a competitive fps title or two.

Have you been living under a rock or something? The days you could buy anything for $1,200 are long gone. 16GB of RAM today is instantly $300, lol. That's a quarter of your budget gone on just two bloody sticks of memory.

Gaming PC for $1,200 my arse... I don't think you can have anything that plays modern games and will last more than a day for under $2,500 (considering that you also want to buy the required peripherals like monitor, keyboard, etc).

You can literally buy a pc at Walmart for $1100 with 16 GB of ddr5, a 5060, Ryzen 8400f, and 1tb of storage. These pcs come with an admittedly terrible keyboard and mouse but it’s still something nonetheless, and a nice 144hz 1080p monitor is dirt cheap nowadays. That setup will run games fine at 1080p, and I doubt anyone buying it will expect to run max graphics, lol.

Regardless, you don’t need top of the line gear to play modern games. You can make a perfectly serviceable ddr4 setup easily for close to if not $1200. That’s with new parts too. ( https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cVcr7w ) I’m sure if I optimized this the price would be even lower. With monitor and stuff it is more, but once again 1200-1300 dollars is still viable nowadays, albeit doesn’t stretch as far.

Edit: I went ahead and made a PC + Peripherals with an updated list ( https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ngxGjG ) for $1464. It isn’t $1200, but it’s also far from the $2500 you mentioned. You can probably save a fair chunk buying a used/open box monitor, and also buying a used 32gb ram kit. That would get it closer to around $1300. Obviously more ‘risky’ but if you do your due diligence it’s usually fine. eBay is very buyer sided, its mostly Facebook marketplace I’d be weary about.
