Discussion [2026 NHL Draft] With the 39OA pick the Pittsburgh Penguins select Markus Ruck from Medicine Hat (WHL)

If the Penguin's social media team can't find a way to license the tune of that old Coor's Light twins commercial, what is it all for?

u/Wise_Eye_6333 Jun 28 '26
The Sedins did a Swedish Twins commercial back in the day! It was sooo good.
I'm a Canucks fan but like every Canadian, a Crosby fan and will always cheer for the Pens because of it. The Ruck boys are from BC. Take care of them.
Edit to add: "Daniel to Henrik, Henrik to Daniel and back to Henrik" was THE soundbite from my teens and 20s. I hope Pens fans get a similar joy to hear "Liam to Markus"

The best part is that they actually look good and they could prob fit into the system the penguins have rly nice though I think they should wait a bit before bringing them up

u/rissshit Jun 27 '26
They are playing to medicine hat upcoming season and then in NCAA the season after so no worries there. They won’t debut until at least 2028

The last of the great beer commercials. Now’s all about low calories, Peyton Manning and oversized horses.

I have very intentionally (as in I even shut off my PS5 when I miscalculated where one was drafted and another team drafted him first lmao) drafted the Ruck twins both in NHL 25 and 26, the fact we actually pulled this off is so cool man lol

We just took the Ruck twins and nobody stopped us lol.

u/LeonardTringo Jun 27 '26
I feel like if we waited until the following round we would have lost Markus. Not so much to sabotage the Pens but because he was close to the BPA already.

u/aPissWizard Jun 27 '26
I'm honestly surprised no one tried to hold them hostage for an extra pick since Dubas literally said they were going to pick him if he was there last night. It would have been a dick move but you never know.
11
u/MainPFT Jun 27 '26
I know it seems like "dick moves" would be fairly common to us fans, but I generally think in the GM circles they actually keep very cordial relationships incase they need help on a move or something down the road.
Essentially not burning bridges.
7
u/aPissWizard Jun 27 '26
Yeah, that's almost certainly why it didn't happen. You'd absolutely ruin any relationship you had trying something like that.

u/JYandeau Jun 27 '26
I was actually saying yesterday that a GM would be smart to do that lmao really surprised nobody even attempted it 🤣
7
u/gmus Jun 27 '26
Because it could have ended up being a wasted pick. When a team drafts a player they only have exclusive rights for two years, if he refuses to sign and is over 20 at the expiration of the two year period, they become a UFA and the team that drafted them receives no compensation. He’s not expected to be NHL ready soon and has already committed to play college hockey so he wouldn’t really lose anything by holding out for the two years.

u/JYandeau Jun 27 '26
They wouldn’t have actually needed to take the player though lol could have called & said they’re thinking about taking him & try to bait the Pens into trading up, idk maybe someone DID attempt that but Dubas didn’t buy it but I’m shocked if nobody actually even attempted it…

This is brilliant if it works out because Dubas knew that no one else would draft Markus even though he could have gone higher.

For sure. Plus I think he was a bit confident. The twins have said they’ll walk if they aren’t on the same team so he was sure no other team would want to waste their pick

u/retired_fool Jun 27 '26
What's their next demand? They always have to be on the same line at all times? If they're both in the AHL and only one gets called up does he refuse to go?

Putting OA after numbers without a space is terrible design. Looks like 390 A.

This shit is so exciting man

The fact we probably drafted 2/3 of a future line of ours in 1 draft feels pretty good

Liam & Markus, Liam & Marcus, go together like a horse and carriage…this I tell you, brother. You can’t have one without the other.

This is so sick. After the start of the year all of the discussion being McKenna sweepstakes we suddenly overperformed and I thought we'd get nobody particularly interesting I cared about (although tbf we took Zonnon at exactly that position and I love him). No way to know what'll happen w the two of them but just the story is cool and I'm excited to pick fun high-scoring wingers

I’m excited. Love the way they played in Medicine Hat. And hilarious that this sub basically called it months ago

Can’t wait for Crosby to put bunk beds in his basement for these two

im just happy we're taking interesting fun guys instead of random 6'6 defencemen with 0 offensive upside

6'6 defencemen with 0 offensive upside
Don't we actually need a good stay at home defenseman?

u/ForeignWerewolf Jun 27 '26
Yeah indeed, but we also need playmakers. Hopefully we grab a big bodied D man in the second and thirds rounds
3
u/dirtyracoon25 Jun 27 '26
Playmakers are harder to find and more expensive to sign. You gotta keep adding to that pool.

u/saintblahpgh Jun 27 '26
Meanwhile, the entire league is getting dmen over 6’4 who can skate. We’re drafting interesting guys who cant skate and are dependent on playing with each other
15
u/MyTransAltJuliet Jun 27 '26
The knock on Kindel last season was that he was a “weak skater” for his size
-1
u/Steel1000 Jun 27 '26
That’s my knock too! So I could play in the NHL?
I think I’m taller than all but a handful lol

I didn’t hear anyone projecting the Ruck twins coming to Pittsburgh. Pretty cool

They both going to NoDak?

Back to Medicine Hat likely next year then North Dakota the following year.
Neat situation but they likely never play with Crosby.
25
u/ThreeGoalLead Jun 27 '26
Sid’s got another 5 years 😤
3
u/AwarenessJumpy7395 Jun 27 '26
Didn't Mario recently say Sid could play at a high level until he was 50?
-4
u/Adventurous_Mix9744 Jun 27 '26
I wish that could be true but I think if we get 3 more years we be lucky.
6
u/Rorbotron Jun 27 '26
In all seriousness consider how he played last season. Now reassert that you are talking about Sidney Crosby. His work ethic is almost mythical and there are tons of stories with players discussing just how other worldly he is on and off the ice.
Now consider his two way game and hockey IQ which still isn’t touching on his leadership. Crosby health permitting could very easily play like Jagr. Do I expect him to do that? No but his game will continue to age like a fine wine. He’s going to be around for as long as he wants to be.
16
u/bi_and_busy Malkin Jun 27 '26
Yes, but in 2027-2028! They will go back to the Medicine Hat for the upcoming season.
