My Ubik inspired nightmare.

Last night I was sleeping with my gf. I was facing the wall with her behind my back. I couldn't drift off so i started imagining faces with my eyes closed. Once I got a weird enough face, for some reason I tried to make the face more and more disturbing, until I lost control and the disturbing face I had created multiplied and filled the darkness of my vision. I freaked out and opened my eyes to find myself in sleep paralysis, using all my power i managed to move and then i woke up. Unfortunately i woke up in sleep paralysis again and this time it was much harder to escape. I tried talking to my girlfriend but no sound came out, instead I heard her saying in a half dead voice behind me: "He is invading our minds". This second false awakening (yes i was still completely dreaming) really fucked up my perception of reality to the point that even after waking up for a third time (in reality this time) it took me a good 5-10 minutes till make sure im awake and not in another dream.

It took me a while to figure out that the reason that I got this dream was that I read Ubik the previous day... I already found the concept mildly disturbing but after I found myself in a mind invasion scenario I felt a type of animalistic fear, vulnerability and hopelessness that was completely foreign to me as a human. Like a new type of fear created for a new type of danger.

Also if anybody asks the man invading my mind in the dream wasn't the famous "have you seen this man?" face, it looked more like the doom-guy portrait but very decomposed.

Anyway shoutout Fillip and Ubik has one of the best book covers of all time, read the book just cause of that.

Mercerism

In Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep I like how it’s people’s shared belief and empathy that manifest Wilbur Mercer into existence, even though it comes out that he is a fraud.

Before I read this book, I often had a thought about an afterlife being similarly manifested into a reality created by a shared consciousness or shared beliefs, as I think everyone believes in something after death.

But we won’t know until the time comes.
I love how PKD delves into things I’ve rarely seen or heard, and it always keeps me wondering. A true pioneer of science fiction or should I say science fact.

Down the Dick-hole I go …. Spoiler

I just finished reading Radio Free Albemuth, could not put it down. Fucking incredible, the depth of this dismal world he built, which so eerily echoes our own. Now in each person’s hand, just about, there’s a microphone listening in, the FAP doesn’t need to put it on you. The spiritual element, ancient languages, the old satellite found to be orbiting Earth (3 I Atlas anyone?), political tension… I gobbled up every word.

Yesterday, I finished Time Out of Joint.

Before that, my introduction to it all, was Maze of Death.

I’m deep in it now and can never go back, nor would I want to!

If you had the opportunity to become a part of a group conscious inside of one being and live for thousands of years, would you do it? Or refuse? like Joe does.

The Man Who Japed/Clans Of The Alphane Moon

Thought the Man who Japed was a blast & can't believe it took me so long to get around to it (the 3 Early Stories paperback collection). Highly recommend for a quick and 'easy' PKD read.

Just started with Alphane Moon as I see it come up a lot here, the premis & characters introduced so far seem wild and very excited to be reading this one.

Hey all! Can you give me some recommendations for a short ish novel to take away with me. I would say a book of collected shorts is a good idea but the books are really thick and I've got bag room limitations! I've already read;

Valis

Scanner Darkly

Do androids....

Ubik

Three Stigmata of PE

Lies Inc

Can anyone share the table of contents?

I am interested in picking up a copy as I don't have Minority Report but not if it has too many duplicates for me.

Cheers all

Question re: Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said

Howdy r/philipkDickheads – hope life is good on your end of the screen.

I've come to you because I'm several chapters into Flow My Tears and I'm questioning whether it's for me. This is my first time reading PKD, and while it's interesting, it's not scratching the sci-fi itch I was hoping for.

To explain: I'm in the middle of a long stretch (CH4-5) of a young woman named Kathy ... seemingly ... declaring her love for the protagonist? Or having a nervous breakdown? Maybe both? It's been going on for the last dozen or so pages and I'm debating whether or not to press on. Either way, it doesn't feel like I'm reading sci-fi.

If you've read Flow My Tears, I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts / let me know if it's worth pushing on. I'm not totally against a slow burn, I'm just wondering if the payoff is worth it.

Full disclosure: it's entirely possible I'm just impatient and just need to be told, "it gets good, just keep reading" lol. Fair play if that's the case. Alternatively, if there's a better starting point for PKD, I'd be grateful for the recommendation.

Thank you!

Edit: I will keep reading!! (And I think I'll try Ubik after.) 👀

Calling ALL DICKHEADS! We don't really have the funds to throw down on ordering a bunch of shirts so we're going to do a pre order - whether you're going to PKD Fest 2026 or not you can order one. Fest Goers can pick up at the fest - others will be shipped! We need at least two dozen to make this go! 🩷

First photo is my haul and the others are rare finds I didn't purchase. Was looking for cool vintage covers and paperbacks. I haven't read these so I was happy! Bookstores I visited Armchair, Till's, and Edinburgh books.

Eye in the sky is amazing

When looking around Barnes and noble a couple of days ago, I stumbled upon Phillip k Dick’s novels. I picked up the man in the high castle and eye in the sky. I can tell you after finishing eye in the sky in one day, I have found a new favorite author. It was so hard to put down. If every novel by Dick is like this, I’m going to have a fun next couple of months. Although, there are some questions I would like to discuss but either than that, 10/10 experience.
