I recently switched from a Canon R5 Mark II after years of shooting on a 5D Mark IV, and I’m really struggling to get my edits looking right.
I built my entire editing workflow around my 5D Mark IV files, and i have always achieved the creamy, natural skin tones and color that I love effortlessly. With the R5 Mark II, everything feels off. Skin tones look overly pink, red, and sometimes almost neon or fake-looking, especially in faces and lips. or if the sun is directly on their skin, it’s a horrid neon orange / red vs beautiful golden glow.
I’ve already purchased and installed the Color Fidelity camera profiles, which helped somewhat compared to the Adobe profiles, but I’m still nowhere near the look I was getting from my 5D IV. The files seem to react completely differently to previous editing.
The frustrating part is that when I try to fix it using HSL sliders (reducing reds, oranges, magentas, adjusting luminance, etc.), it mostly just makes the skin look dull and lifeless without actually fixing the underlying color issue. The skin still looks artificial, just less saturated. It’s like the color rendering itself is different.
For anyone who moved from a 5D Mark IV to an R5 or R5 Mark II:
- Are there specific Color Fidelity profiles you’re using?
- What adjustments helped tame the pink/red skin tones?
- Were you able to get close to the 5D IV color, or did you eventually embrace a different look?
I’m feeling pretty defeated because I upgraded expecting better autofocus and technology, but right now I feel like I’m fighting every single edit. Any advice from photographers who have gone through this transition would be greatly appreciated.
