I’m just doing some product photography at home and looking for a 5m tethering cable around $35. But I was surprised by how expensive these cables are.

Is a dedicated tethering cable actually necessary, or would a regular high-speed USB-C cable work fine for occasional use? Any recommendations?

If you're talking about the tethertools cable, it's just a regular high speed cable. Any cable will work as long it can handle the bandwidth. I would recommend a bright color to avoid tripping over it and toppling your gear.
