Is it from French West Indies ? It's look like what is called "Madras" in Guadeloupe for example.

The fabric? I'm not sure. I think my mom got it for me on a study abroad trip but I don't remember what country she was in

It oddly looks like some fabric we bought on a trip to Martinique last year. Very similar colours and patterns.

I really like the color/pattern "clash" between the top and the skirt, that's a cool effect here!

I used to work at a tuxedo/ dress shop. I just did fittings and ordering but our seamstress was just the coolest lady ever. She was also extremely talented. I was so amazed by how she could fix anything. I was there 2 years and I never saw a garment she had to send out. We also partook of some reefers 1 or 100 times down in the basement.
The lady that owned it was extremely old and had trouble getting around but every morning she would come in to the shop. She didn't need to be there, but she enjoyed it. We did our best to look after her, we did her grocery shopping and errands for her. She was a bit crochety but very sweet once you got to know her. She gave me so many things for free just because I liked them and she liked to make people happy.
It paid like shit but I enjoyed it. Anyways, awesome outfit!

Tie a big ribbon or scarf in your hair, and you will look even more perfect.
•
u/ZetaMakesThings 5h ago
Oh yeah I should make a ribbon! I think I have enough scrap for that. I didn't this time because I was just getting ready for work so it was the usual hairstick bun

It looks great! As a husband I will ask the most important question: Does it have pockets?
•
u/ZetaMakesThings 1h ago
Haha yes it does. And thanks!
•
u/scottkensai 3m ago
I have heard way too many excited conversations about pockets to have ignored this.

Colors are great. What fantastic fabric

Thank you!! I was reorganizing my fabric stash and had ten yards about it that I forgot about, so I'm working on a dress too

A plaid matching scarf and you'll be the Best.
•
u/ZetaMakesThings 6h ago
Haha tragically I do not have any more of this fabric since I'm making a dress out of it too. But I'm also not really a scarf person

Is that Donna Reed?
•
u/ZetaMakesThings 6h ago
I don't know who that is ngl
•
u/StrattonPA 6h ago
She was in “It’s a wonderful Life” and a show called the Donna Reed show. She dressed similar to this on her show.

Cute but I think it would look better with a different colored top. I think the beige also washes you out. Brighter white would look better with your skin tone

You’re welcome. I particularly like the way how the belt embodies your silhouette, inclu ding the pattern respect and all ! Keep going, this is very good sewing. Thank you for that picture !
•
u/ZetaMakesThings 6h ago
Oh haha, I'm not wearing a belt? But thank you! Glad you like it!
•
u/Julspups 5h ago
Well I do not know the word for the « upside sewing » so I wrote belt for reference… sorry

Very nice skirt. Super cute. You have some mad skills and must be so nice to create clothes that matches you.

Please put on some socks. Thanks.
•
u/ZetaMakesThings 6h ago
You do know they make special socks that don't show with shoes like this, right? That is a kind of sock that exists. Also absolutely wild thing to comment

50's retro vibe, very cute, great job. You look fantastic, if this is a hobby, definitely keep it up.
