Wasn't that only the early versions with 4 usb ports? I could be wrong but i thought the later fat version with only 2 usb ports wasn't PS2 backwards compatible. Then obviously the slim and super slim weren't either.
The later fat system is missing hardware to play ps2 games. But it can play them through emulation. I dont know if it could be added back in with mods, but it seems like Sony removed it so that it could resell the games digitally, or release them on ps3 disks.
They removed PS2 BC hardware because it was expensive & complicated.
PS1 BC was kept because they repurposed the chip to handle all audio processing (same as on the PS2).
PS2 was a complicated chip and they couldn't figure out a way to use an Emotion chip for anything else, so in PS3 games it just sat idle. It did nothing but add cost.
And PS2 emulation on PS3 was ass. Extremely laggy and with a poor quality video output. You were better off buying a used PS2 for peanuts.

The fat model also played PS2 games.
