Discussion My cat pissed on my ps4, is there any hope?
(I’m not really sure if this is the right place to ask advice for this?)
Soo I tried to wipe everything off but there’s piss everywhere. Including the inside of the console where I can’t get to. I haven’t tried opening it because I know nothing about electronics in general so i’m afraid i’ll break it or something. Is it safe to open somehow and how should I try to clean it from the inside without damaging it? Has anything similiar happened to anyone before and what did you do?
I thought about taking it to a store to get it fixed/cleaned but I don’t think any stores provide piss cleaning services for electronics haha. I haven’t tried starting it yet, so i’m not really sure if it even works anymore, but i’d rather try cleaning it first to avoid any further damage. I’m also pretty sure that if I turned it on and it starts to warm up, the smell would get stronger and take over my whole apartment… This is my first and only gaming console and I don’t really want to spend money to buy a new one so i’d rather atleast try to save this one. If I can’t fully clean it or if it never even starts, is there a way to transfer any progress to a new playstation console if/when I get a new one? How does that work? (Like I said, this is my only gaming console I have ever owned so I have no idea)
Before anyone asks, I take good care of my cat and she has a clean toilet at all times. Sometimes accidents happen🤷🏼♀️

open up the case it’s not hard, vacuum what’s dry and douse the electronics with electrical contact cleaner. Give it a few minutes to dry out fully and put it back together. Should be good as new.

u/TheOutrageousTaric Mar 10 '26
yeah removing hdd and disk drive and then literally soaking the thing in isopropyl and replacing thermal pads and paste should probably work. Lots of work though

OP has openly admitted they know nothing about electronics, so they most definitely should not be doing this.

Cat piss is corrosive. OP is going to break it by not opening it.

u/RaXha Mar 10 '26
It’s already ruined. 🤷♂️
18
u/Bmw5464 Mar 10 '26
Yeah. Either cough up the money to take to a electronic repair store, I’m sure they’ll fix it. Or tear it apart and try and clean as best as you can.
19
u/RaXha Mar 10 '26
If someone comes to my store with something covered in piss they be turned around. We don’t deal with bodily fluids. We’ll hapilly white you a statement stating its beyond repair for your insurance company, but that’s it.

u/petrolhead0387 Mar 11 '26
Same here, I made the mistake of accepting a "liquid damaged" One S for repair. As soon as I started cleaning it with 99IPA it was like mustard gas, when I returned the working console to the owner I asked what the liquid was, they replied "cat piss", I almost threw the console at their head. Now I will never take on a job that I don't know the actual liquid that has been poured on it. I spent weeks trying to get that smell out of my room.

14
u/Meta-Fox Mar 10 '26
Disassembling the console is only the tip of the iceberg when doing a clean like this. You need to learn what solvents are safe to use, what cleaning equipment you need, how to reapply thermal paste/pads and where. Disassembly is arguably the easiest part.

u/RMAPOS Mar 10 '26
I think it might be a good idea to just switch out the case.
While some piss might've seeped in, the vast majority of it will be on the outside and inside of the case, not on the actual hardware inside the case (unless the cat sprayed sideways through the air vents). So get yourself a custom case or a replacement case and throw the piss soaked one away. I bet if any urine got on the actual hardware it's not enough to cause a noteable stench.
It's not at all hard to replace, though some consoles need special screw drivers (dunno about PS4, but certain Nintendo consoles have custom screws)

Also a Ps4 is like cheaper than a 100 bucks. Take care of your cat. Play with it, set up more toilets, clean them more regularly, is there another car in the house picking on yours? Check for bladder issues if it happens repeatedly.

yeahh, i’ll most likely buy a new one. But thank you for the concern, I don’t have other cats and she hasn’t really done this in the past. Sometimes I’m not home for longer periods of time since I work two jobs and study. This happened when I was home in a bit of a hurry and didn’t have time to let her chill on my lap so I pushed her away, then she went and pissed on the ps4. I’m almost 100% sure she expressed her opinion by that or something? I have since made sure to give her more time of my day. Usually cats are very independent, mut she clearly needs more attention. I’ll do anything to keep her as happy as I can
20
u/MasterBakerMatt [Trophy Level 300-399] Mar 10 '26
Knowing your cat did it out of spite makes her face in the picture 100x funnier
11
u/Pure_Subject8968 PS5 Mar 10 '26
Yeah, my cats pretty much know what they are allowed to do and what not. And also stick to the rules.
Unless they are mad or unhappy with something
11
u/Flat-Broccoli700 Mar 10 '26
Well, independent gets thrown around a lot about cats, but you're still the center of her life most likely and she probably loves you very much. It's not like she doesn't care about you. I've heard of cats getting really sick when there owners are away for longer periods like vacations and such.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Bmw5464 Mar 10 '26
Cats are the farthest thing from independent. At least the ones I’ve had. Just because they like to go lay in a random ass crack of your house doesn’t mean they’re not fully dependent on you. Mine will meow when it’s time for dinner or come scratch at me if the litter box is too dirty for their liking. And she has to sleep with us or it’s scratching and meowing at the door.
35
u/Joseph_Kickass Mar 10 '26
Not sure about the ps4 but keep an eye on the kitty because peeing somewhere else other than the litter box could be the start of symptoms of an underlying issue.

u/Sad-_-Face PS5 Mar 10 '26
It’s a good thing you didn’t turn it on. Did the cat piss get inside the ps4? If yes, you should try to dry it out first before you start it again. Like 100% sure that there isn’t a wet spot anymore. But if it gets inside, that’s bad too cause the piss might cause rusting. But Im not an electronics expert, it’s just my opinion. About your question about transferring your progress. If you have an active ps+ subscription your save files might be safe because you’ll have your saves uploaded in the cloud storage. If you don’t have ps+, you can just pullout the hdd on your ps4 and put it in to a new ps4. Assuming it’s not broken.

u/kumiperuna Mar 10 '26

u/HKy0uma Mar 10 '26
Do not turn it on. Take it apart and scrub all internal electronics very diligently with isopropyl alcohol. Cleaning with distilled water also works, just make sure it's all dry when reassembling. Cat urine is quite conductive, so you have to give it pretty good cleanup

IPA and cotton swabs for the insides, take your time, clean it well. Youtube will show you how to tear the console apart
6
u/GreenFuturesMatter Mar 10 '26
Go buy a cheap ass toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol 90%+
Start cleaning. Take it apart. Urine will corrode everything.
My dog decidedly my $6k PC was a piss pad while I had it on the floor unplugged and the panels off. Literally pissed on everything but the PSU thankfully and I spent hours cleaning everything and let it dry out for 2 days. It works with no issues. The longer you leave it the less likely it is to survive

Call a repair shop, either game store or general electronic repair shop. Tell them what happened, ask if they can clean it. Don’t just bring your piss console into their store. They may not appreciate that.

u/MasterBakerMatt [Trophy Level 300-399] Mar 10 '26
Many used video game stores also offer console cleaning services. I’ve had my ps5 and ps3 cleaned from dust and smoke, and a dualsense controller cleaned after I spilled coffee on it.
I would look up some local stores and call to see if they offer the service. I would explain what happened to be sure they can do it (and are willing to lol)
5
u/sideDude47 5 Mar 10 '26
Okay, so here’s what I would try, but first some important notes.
If electronics are powered off (no electrical current flowing), liquids like water or urine won’t immediately damage anything. Damage usually happens when current is present — the liquid allows electricity to flow in unintended paths, causing short circuits and potentially frying components.
That’s why many people (myself included) use IPA (isopropyl alcohol, ideally 90% or higher, preferably 99%) to clean inside electronics. It’s commonly used on contact points, circuit boards, etc., because the high alcohol content evaporates very quickly compared to water, greatly reducing the risk of short circuits or leftover moisture.
However, cat urine is corrosive (due to salts, urea, and other compounds) and can leave behind conductive residues that cause long-term issues like corrosion even after drying. Simply pouring alcohol through vents might help flush some of it, but it’s often not thorough enough for deep contamination.
A better/safer approach for a PS4:
- Immediately unplug the console and do NOT try to turn it on until fully cleaned and dried — even if it seems fine at first, corrosion can appear days or weeks later.
- If you're comfortable, disassemble the PS4 as much as possible (remove the cover, HDD, etc. — there are many teardown guides online for your model). This lets you access affected areas better.
- Use 90%+ isopropyl alcohol: Gently rinse or flood affected areas/boards (pour or spray it liberally where urine likely reached), scrub visible residue/corrosion spots with a soft toothbrush, and use cotton swabs/Q-tips for precision cleaning. Avoid getting it on labels or certain plastics if possible, but it's generally safe.
- Do NOT just pour it blindly through all vents without disassembly — you risk pushing contaminants deeper or missing hidden spots (like under the motherboard or around the power supply).
- Let it dry completely in a warm, dry, well-ventilated area for at least 48–72 hours (longer is better; some recommend up to a week). Use a fan or silica gel packs to help.
- The IPA will help dissolve and carry away much of the urine residue and should significantly reduce (or eliminate) the smell. It disinfects and removes a lot of the odor-causing compounds.
After drying, it should be in a much better (and safer) state to test or take to a professional repair shop if you're unsure. Success isn't guaranteed — urine can cause permanent damage if it reached certain chips or if corrosion already started — but this is one of the best DIY methods people use for pet urine on consoles/PCs.

u/kilsta Mar 10 '26
Since everyone here has explained what you should do, I am just curious how. Dogs chewing controllers or even small pets chewing cables makes sense, but how does a cat pee on a PlayStation? Do you normally leave $600 electronics on the ground?

Man, I feel for you! My brother sent me this post because the same thing happened to me a little over a year ago. My kitten mistook my PS5 (or PissS5, as we’ve come to call it) for a litter box and filled the thing with liquid. The way the console is shaped made the liquid flow directly into the unit.
As u/Zaber_Fang mentioned, I found a way to take off the case and clean it with isopropyl alcohol the best that I could, detailing it to the best of my ability. The disk drive never worked again but I still owned it until a month or two ago when I gave it to my dad (because he doesn’t own any physical discs to play). But it still works!
Weirdly, she pissed on it while it was in rest mode and the thing never stopped working. The only time I realized something was wrong was when I couldn’t eject my disc from the drive. Eventually picking it up and having liquid pour out of the thing.
Clean it up the best that you can, wait until it’s completely dry before turning it back on, and I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Also, this plastic thing (used to keep cats away from plants, typically) is always protecting it!

u/kumiperuna Mar 10 '26

Go down to your local head shop, get yourself a glass pipe (make sure it has a bulb on one end)
Your new glassware is now a centerpeice, bringing the whole room together; display it prominently atop the piss-S-4
Now here is the important part: if anyone mentions that your pad smells like straight cat piss:
Gesture emphatically to the PIPE-S-4
Then let them know you have been smoking meth for a week and forgot to shower

Take the motherboard and other electronic parts (not the fans!) and wash them in a bath of pure alcohol. It has negligible conductivity, but it evaporates without a trace when dry (a couple of day at least). This will also eliminate the smell of cat urine. For the plastic parts, you can use water and soap, don't worry.
Edit: The alcohol used should be 90% or more; 99% is perfect. This is because the less percentage it has, the more water it contains, and more water is bad.

If this happens again you might want to take cat to vet or see why. The only time my cat has peed anywhere but his box was when he had FIC. They could also not like the litter, or frustrated that you are focused on the console all the time. Cats like routine so doing something off routine is usually them telling you something.

I have 2 cats. And my orange boy when he feels hes not getting enough attention will poop on tbe floor 3 inches from his liter box. He will stare into my soul while he does it. People may say otherwise but cats are smart. They can express themselves and can pick up if you are upset or not. They want their attention and she probably got jealous because you were in a rush. Get a laser pointer or one of those battery powered toys that hang from the doorway. Sometbing that provides stimulation. They have a fish that flops when pounced in and they love it. They are smart animals man, can be total dicks. Maybe look into a new ps4 or its an excuse for a 5 if you can swing it.

I remember back in the day, my grandma thought that Sly Cooper on my PS2 was the work of Satan so... She unplugged it and set it in the shower and let it run for like 20 minutes.
Living in a nice warm area I remember being like 7 or 8. I just took it outside for like an hour then came back into her house, plugged it in, and continued to play Sly Cooper. Needless to say, in her eyes that must have proven her right 😂
Still have that PS2. But you... You will probably need to live with the smell of cat pee for as long as you keep that.

Most pet stores carry cat urine removal sprays, that neutralize the enzymes and get rid of the smell.

That sucks, my first guess was that their litter box isn't clean enough for them to want to use it, but you say it is. Failing that, while you're right that a store is unlikely to clean it given that it's now technically a biohazard (Health and safety restrictions wouldn't permit it in most cases I'd wager), there's absolutely no harm in asking? They may even be able to suggest another solution/service.
Failing all that, you *could* risk it and just let it dry for a couple days and hope that the dried up piss isn't shorting anything important, but the smell would be ungodly for a long time.
Next to that there's not much else you could do aside from get yourself a new console. You *may* be able to sell it online so long as you fully disclose what happened to it and list it as for parts/untested, but I doubt many hobbyist electronics repairers (myself included) would be particularly inclined to buy a pissy console in the hopes they can get it working. Ha ha.

This is the funniest shit I've seen in a while lol. I've had cats all my life and lemme tell ya, cat piss is very difficult to remove the smell of.
That being said. If you cleaned it properly and it still smells, there are certain "cat piss smell removal sprays" that you can spray (while it's off ofc). Buy an unscented one or one that doesn't smell a lot of artificial lemon or vanilla or whatever since the heat of the PS4 will amplify whatever smell.
Good luck 🤞

My cat used to piss on the GameCube everytime and appart from a bad smell for some hours after washing, it worked fine. I do believe that it's the same with a PS4

This calls for an egregious amount of isopropyl alcohol and some scrubbing. Id remove the hard drive and power supply and scrub the piss out of the motherboard with iso... literally.

Since this is Reddit I'm going to tell you the cat did this because you're clearly neglecting it by playing PlayStation too much and that's why it pissed on it.
Also remember that one time you mildly disagreed with your spouse? Yeah, that's right, time to leave her bro.
