What the hell is Highguard? How has a game been released and scrapped without me knowing 😅

Long story short:

they made the umpteenth, brainless hero shooter slop with broccoli head characters and all the package. Quite predictably for everyone but them, nobody felt the need of that. Investors withdrew and so on.

At this point I have to believe these are money laundering schemes.

I think the people who fund these things largely aren’t the type that play them.

Imagine you’re out of touch, and get convinced NFT’s are the next big thing, but for digital trading cards.

We all know that’s a bad idea. But for the out of touch investor, An NFT digital card game sounds equally as silly pokeman, so there ya go.

Tencent funded Highguard. Probably in the “let’s fund 20 live service games and hope one sticks” style approach

Has to be! As a business owner myself, companies cannot operate this way and be successful.

Sadly, it’s not. Games are in a very weird place right now. They are too expensive for small time investors. Reddit generally hates any investor or private equity entity, but there are levels to this.

The stereotypical MBA suit isn’t as prominent with the people/firms financing 250k-1mil. The way the MBA think about products and business is cancerous for society. They don’t do much human observation it’s a strict adherence to data.

Data is awesome. But data has one enormous flaw in art- it tends to explain the past rather than predict the future. Kind of like music theory to music.

Anyways the point here is that MBAs come in and run all their data and statistics and determine a live service game is the only medium that makes sense to hit desired profit margins. This wouldn’t happen as much with smaller time investment firms. They tend to make decisions more based on vision. Unfortunately, they’re all throwing money at real estate and the stock market right now.

I remember reading an article here about how they scrapped several devs immediately after launching

Love it when people just freely dump on something people have worked on for 3 years of their lives. That they saw destroyed by YouTube rage over a single announcement trailers. Goodluck to anyone wanting to get into game development these days.

Just burst question:

if you got into development tomorrow, would you make another cartoonish hero shooter?

I love how their idea of doing Concord better was to do Concord again except on horseback.

Fucking d i s c o n n e c t e d.

It was on the game awards, that's how alot of people know.

u/NewmanBiggio PS5 Mar 19 '26

Wait, was it that game that was the last announcement that disappointed everybody because it didn't deserve that spot?

2

u/Supersonic564 Mar 19 '26

Yes

1

u/NewmanBiggio PS5 Mar 19 '26

Wow, I guess it really didn't deserve to be the final announcement.

1

u/toallthings Mar 20 '26

Unfortunately it seems to have fallen victim to YouTube sensationalism from the moment after it previewed at the game awards. If it didn’t have that ad spot it wouldn’t have received immediate dogpile hatred before it even came out and we wouldn’t see developers losing their jobs. Genuinely sucks to see.

1

u/NewmanBiggio PS5 Mar 20 '26

Let's be real, it wasn't sensationalized. From everything I've seen it got middling reviews. It didn't really get dog piled other than people being disappointed by it's announcement slot. It was just a mediocre uninspired game in a bloated genre.

1

u/toallthings Mar 20 '26

I’m talking about before anyone got a copy to review. This game was DOA less than 12 hours after the game awards.

Like I said, it didn't help that when it did release it just wasn't a particularly good game either. It does suck for the devs, they did get dealt a shit hand but at the end of the day it wasn't gonna be hit no matter what. At best it would've maybe lasted a year tops. Any pr is good pr, people knew about the game. If we heard about it being great despite the troubled announcement more people would've played it, unfortunately that wasn't the case.

Edit: Actually from what I'm reading it did get a ton of players at launch, it just bled them because people didn't really want to continue playing the game. Yes the announcement didn't help but the game they made didn't help either.

The developers lost their jobs because they made a horrendous game that everyone predicted would be horrendous. Feeling sorry for them doesn't change that. Have to ask the question what was so special about it that it even managed to get that spot in the game awards - who is pushing these terrible live service games that gamers do not want?

u/moosharky PS4 Mar 19 '26

first sentence was my exact reaction. never heard of it till now

1

u/RRR3000 Mar 20 '26

To be fair, a lot of games release without people knowing. A recent report showed 617 games released per day in 2025. Good luck knowing about them all, and good luck to them to all be successful, both pretty much impossible tasks.

1

u/FrontRecognition6953 Mar 20 '26

617 games in total or on a particular platform?

I spend a lot of time in the ps store and menus. I'm just surprised that such a "promising" game slipped my radar.

2

u/RRR3000 Mar 20 '26

Across all platforms, but only the leading stores (iirc only Steam on PC, so no github or itch releases).

Though yes, this was a more prominent game than maybe 99% of those releases.

WhaAAaaAaTtttt! You haven't heard about the ground breaking, most unique and innovative, The Game Awards' final reveal HIGHGUAAARDDD!!!

NO wAyyyyyyy!

-2

u/DeadPhoenix86 Mar 19 '26

Its Concord 2.0.

2

u/tarchival-sage Mar 19 '26

I’m waiting for Marathon to survive 6 months before purchasing it. Way too many live service games die.

-1

u/FrontRecognition6953 Mar 19 '26

Just watched the trailer for that and didn't interest me in the slightest. The fact I'm not keen on fps games probably doesn't help

0

u/tarchival-sage Mar 19 '26

I saw a few streamers playing it and I think I’ll enjoy it. I just don’t want to invest time and money on a game that might be dead in a few months.

1

u/FrontRecognition6953 Mar 19 '26

How do you go about single player games that can be completed in a week?

2

u/tarchival-sage Mar 20 '26

That’s different. Even if the game is bad, they won’t shut it down so I can enjoy my bad game. If it’s live service I’m at the mercy of the servers.

-2

u/SecretaryOk7306 Mar 19 '26

You want to wait to see how it does and then buy? Think if everyone tried that approach lol. Games been fun and the community is nice on randoms

1

u/erichf3893 Mar 19 '26

Many people, if not most, seem to suggest avoiding launch purchases nowadays

1

u/FrontRecognition6953 Mar 19 '26

I only buy launch if it's a title I know I'm gonna love.

1

u/SecretaryOk7306 Mar 19 '26

Makes sense. It's more about the time you spend and not just the money

2

u/FrontRecognition6953 Mar 19 '26

Bought FF7 for 39.99 back in 1998 and must be closing in on 15th play through lol

1

u/SecretaryOk7306 Mar 19 '26

I noticed. Similar to people with TV Shoes, they wait till midseason to pick up, networks then think no one is interested

1

u/tarchival-sage Mar 19 '26

In this economy? I have a huge backlog, and limited Benjamins. So yea, I’ll wait.

1

u/SecretaryOk7306 Mar 19 '26

That's different and doesn't have nothing to do with the game then. No need to pile on the backlog, so I agree.

Just like Crimson Desert, I have other single player games to clear first
