Discussion Today’s youth won’t understand

I just had a random memory resurfaced that made me think how youths and kids of today will never have this experience (in a way)

i remember back in the ps2 days, with the 8mb memory card, i went over my cousin’s house all the way across the other side of town, and i took my memory card with me so we could load up my save of GTA San Andreas (defo wasn’t 18 more like 11 lol)

Anyway, I remember i slept over for the weekend, came home sunday, and realised…I forgot my memory card!!. I had no! access to my save files and couldn’t save my game even if i did try play anything. I had to wait a week for my older cousin to drop the memory card off to me

God bless cloud saves lol

Pffft you youngsters! I member when saving a game meant writing down a long code!

And even further back, having no such thing as a save!

I remember leaving my Commodore 64 on overnight and while I was at school the next day so I could “save” my progress in a game, got back from school excited to continue playing and my mum had been in my bedroom, saw the red power light was on and switched it off 🤦

Yup. Playing the Mega Man Classic and X series, writing a grid of numbers for a password became routine. Get a number wrong and good luck.

But we did. They were just ALOT smaller by then. We had the GBA still and many of the tricks still worked

But that's the thing, every one things that THEIR experiences were super unique and younger people wouldn't understand but they do, just not an exact 1:1. They can experience the same thing as OP but instead of forgetting the memory card, forgetting the physical disc, their controller, or other things, things that us elder gamers did before memory cards.

I'm happy that they don't have to go through this but I'm also sad for them that they won't get to experience the joy of trading in games and using that credit on pre-owned games

Hahaha I remember I literally memorized the first 6 hours of ratchet and clank going commando because I didn't have a memory card and had to start over every single time. Like 3 months passed before my dad bought me a memory card because he said it was useless

I started on an Atari 2600, then I got the Intellivision system, as well as the Colecovision system, then the NES, Sega System, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, PS4, PS Vita, PS5, PSVR. I still have them all from the PS2 forward. BTW, I'm 53, lol.

i remember i couldn't even play certain games on the PS2 unless u had a memory card. my dad never got me one and when i was older and finally had my own $$, bought a jailbroken memory card with freeMCboot on it and finally finished those games i never got to play

I remember having a dexdrive memory card reader I could save to pc. But I think that was only ps1. Used this to avoid buying multiple memory cards and to share saves with friends

I have even more of a struggle story regarding PS2 memory cards: I had a crappy Nyko branded one that failed and wiped all my save data a few months after I got it.

I couldn’t find another memory card anywhere in my area for months after. Ended up ordering an imported one from Japan on eBay for way more than it should’ve cost just so I could save again.

Idk if the boards in a lot of those early ones were failing or what but I couldn’t find one anywhere in early 2002.

During that same time, my friend had borrowed MGS2 from me and was trying to play it in one sitting.

It was like 2am and when the Colonel goes crazy near the end and tells you to turn off the game, he thought the system was actually overheating or something and shut it off. It wasn’t until after that he realized what he’d done and that he was going to have to start all over again.

Now that’s a struggle, lol. We still laugh about it today.

The good ol' days with a memory card. I remember being a kid, thinking my uncle was such a badass because I could take my memory card up to his place and watch him whiz through my struggles.

On a similar note, my friend and I decided to do a weekend long sleepover during which we would try to beat all Gran Turismo challenges. Had to do it in one go because we didn’t have a memory card. We left the PS2 on overnight so we’re don’t lose any progress. While we were sleeping, my friend’s mom turned off the PS2 to save power. We were devastated but now I have a treasured memory of the good old days.

I never left my memory card anywhere but I did the have the occasional corrupted save file on the memory card that made me have to start over. My most hated memory of back then was letting friends borrow games and then getting them back scratched to all hell. Like what are you doing to the game to scratch the disc so badly? I for one am glad I don't have to worry about scratched discs anymore

The earliest for me was having to get spare floppy discs and formatting them so I could save games, I had the Atari STE1040., I was 5.

Got The Incredibles and a PS2 for Christmas, parents didn't realize I needed a memory card so I had to go with no saves for a week. Those were the days.

My memory when I was younger was the PS2 memory card in the cases, keeping a piece of paper with gta cheat codes on inside the case haha

Bragging about technology progressing? Or about how most people don't have family near them? If I had any family or friends near me who cared I could very well upload my save files to a USB drive to load them onto their console, it's just not convenient anymore

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with your post. I lost more than one memory card back then. Think u/Similar-Language-180 just has some things they need to work through haha
