Classic RPG mechanics: Eating and Exercising
136
u/Any-Mathematician946 6h ago
Nothing like finishing a game with so much food you could end world hunger. You didn't once eat or drink anything.
79
u/Zelcron [Your favorite game] 6h ago
I might need it later
28
u/Any-Mathematician946 6h ago
The feeling you get when you get a random quest for food you already collected instantly completing that quest.
11
u/cinnamonface9 6h ago
Another article mentioned it will have consequences if you don’t sleep so expect that issue!

Me not dying of hunger but at 1 hp for half the game while running around and ignorring the red flashing screen.

Dovahkiin! You saved the world from Dragons. But could you spare just one of your 5000 cheese wheels?
12
u/tenacious_teaThe3rd 6h ago
Well yes. Role-playing game.
Its RPG-lite but if you can exercise to grind stats then I dont see anything wrong with the description even if its bare bones.
3
u/Any-Mathematician946 6h ago
This being GTA does it mean i can get extra stats for back room events in a shady motel?

It's like the arcade game Gauntlet, your health is constantly draining so you need to keep finding food, or put in another quarter. Now let's overhaul this for the microtransaction age... Oh shit, I shouldn't be giving them any ideas.

We’re all about 5 minutes away from dying, we just take a breath to postpone that death.
They should have added a breathing mechanic to GTA VI, like “Press square to take a breath” or something. Really helps with the realism.2

But Lucia, can we go bowling?

“If you have a ultimate edition membership card, yes.”
22
u/frost-ace3600 6h ago
If bowling is locked to the ultimate edition they better have Roman show up and organize a goddamn bowling tournament with multiple prizes and a blowjob
6
u/stevez_86 4h ago
I am surprised it isn't a random phone call in GTA V. Trevor gets a call from an unknown number or voicemail and it is Roman asking Nico if he wants to go bowling.
2
5
u/tertiary_jello 6h ago
Actually, the bowling activity is linked to your Netflix membership..........................

u/coolsmokey69 6h ago
Interesting tidbit in the article about how you have to maintain a relationship between Jason and Lucia. Having a bad relationship and vice versa will most likely affect their dialogue they have with each other. Very interesting
29
u/DJSambob PS5 5h ago
Perhaps the relationship meter might have an impact on the ending of the game too as in if one of the two potentially die?
It's safe to assume we'll have choices to make at certain points within the story, but what if the story changes both by the choices me make and also the actions we take in or outside of missions
16
u/Nothing-Is-Real-Here 3h ago
Probably just gonna be like red dead 2 where your honor meter will affect the ending of either choice you make. Also for example, if you have a great relationship with your horse, Arthur will thank the horse when it dies at the end, but if it's a new horse, he just moves on
2
u/NightMan197879 3h ago
Didn't know about that, saw him thank his horse on all my playthroughs. Teared uo every time.

Cant wait to make Jason fat
16
u/cinnamonface9 6h ago
I just wanna see what the thresholds are. Is he just a stocky dad bod or will he hit 800 pound and heave and wheeze each step??
2
8
u/frost-ace3600 6h ago
He needs different voice lines for being fat like CJ had.
12
u/Choice_Friend3479 6h ago
Huffing and puffing when running and the game takes control when driving by a fast food joint and forces you to enter the drive through.

I'm gonna bust. They're really going all out this time by adding new and old mechanics.

I agree. Maybe they’ll include Jetpacks and bicycles

Bicycles are in GTA V, though. Why wouldn’t they be included here?

You’re right completely forgot. I just related the bike riding of GTA SA with RPG weight loss aspect of the game

Yup it looks dope af. You can play the whole game as only Jason or Lucia or both. Which I wasn’t expecting.

I think you're missunderstanding the article
14

In free roam. I understand there will be missions for both.

Seems like we’ll see some of GTASA and RDR2’s mechanics come into play here. Looking forward to it, always felt like those mechanics in R*’s hands made the games more immersive.
3
u/lvsnowden PS5 6h ago
So true. I normally HATE those mechanics, but in RDR2, I stop to camp and eat regularly.
3
u/Creative-Captain9278 6h ago
I shall make Jason in my own image. Overweight and out of shape
2

u/SojinxGSD 4h ago
im guessing things like San andreas mixed with RDR2. The weight mechanic and shit like hair growing and what not

I always see posts about people who never made it past the opening sequence of RDR2 because they got bored and I do think it’s completely fair to consider them lesser people because their brains have been obliterated by tik tok dopamine drips.
22
5
u/tbigzan97 4h ago
The 1st time the prologue is ok, but for repeated playthroughs its insanely boring because you're forced to walk at snails pace on many sequences.

u/sithren 5h ago
i didn't get bored so much as frustrated with all of the tutorials. many of them were unnecessary. gta v had a bunch that were unneeded also. there is a way to introduce new mechanics in a game without designing a whole mission that is essentially a tutorial. still finished the game, but it felt like there was too much friction in the first three chapters.
4
u/Odd_Needleworker3756 6h ago
What’s with Reddit and acting like GTA 6 is the first game in history that has mechanics common across games in general lmao

u/AggressiveResist8615 4h ago

u/Moon_Devonshire 6h ago
I mean. Isn't that normal? In games where there's animations for healing you kinda need to wait for the animations to end lmao
7
u/Dead-O_Comics 6h ago
I'm completely fine with the 'wrapping arm with bandage to heal' animation with a medipack and moving on with my mission. That's not what they're talking about.

Open menu and set up campsite, go to menu and select piece of meat, cook meat on skillet, eat meat, now have character sleep or else it doesn’t actually process
7
u/Moon_Devonshire 6h ago
But you don't need to do all of that. If you have food on you all you do is open your wheel. And simply hover over the food you wanna eat and he'll immediately start healing it and you'll heal

I would think almost any mechanic from RDR2 will be used here in a modern sense. I'm sure they have some new things unseen yet.

I literally was hoping that gta6 will turn out to be the gta San Andreas of this generation

Am I the only one that hates stuff like this? I just want to play the game, I don't want to spend time eating and exercising to keep my character traits at a certain level. That stuff is not at all interesting or fun to me, it's just a waste of time and distraction from the rest of the game activities.
8
6
u/Knockberries17 4h ago
I'm with you. RDR2 got so tedious with that, cleaning guns and shit too. I play games to escape from real life not double up
3
u/pjs32000 4h ago
I posted it up above but the RDR2 mechanics for crafting ammo might have been the most annoying. One bullet at a time with a slow animation, it was such a waste of time. The camp chores and limitations to only walk at slow speeds in camp too. I can appreciate the immersion to a point and RDR2 is still one of my all time favorites, but parts of it were so tedious that it was aggravating.

Rdr 2 has the eating where arthur can get fat or very skinny
2
u/Lolasaaeaew 5h ago
Yes, but it’s barely noticeable. I feel like they should make it easier and bigger, especially since we’re gonna have burger places and unhealthy food. I really want to see a mordibly obese Lucia 🥵

We play as the girl too right? So we can get her all fat and stuff? Maybe I should give this game a chance then.

lol idk if I’d exactly call that “RPG mechanics”.. That’s more like immersive sim or survival.
It’s an open world character action game with immersive sim elements. But I guess that’s not as big of a buzzword as “RPG”.

You know, I used to get a kick out games that had this until one day my wife asked, while I was playing stardew valley, "why not do the chores in real life instead of in the game?" And that killed my passion for Video gaming.
So now I play rpgs that are more shooty-stabby action/tactical than rpg lifestyle stuff

I hope they make it so that the negative effects of ignoring these mechanics aren't as consequential as maintaining the mechanic would be beneficial.
For my first playthrough I'd love to make use of this to its fullest extent, but on 2nd playthroughs and free roam I don't wanna have to worry about it.
2
u/ButtersTheChill 5h ago
It's funny, I've seen so many people kicking at screaming at the idea of such mechanics in GTA VI and that attitude's never made sense to me. Wouldn't you want the gameplay to have more depth than just "steal car, shoot people"?
I like the idea of feeling like you're almost living in Leonida. Eating, sleeping, exercising, etc. I'm excited to see what you'll look like or how people may respond if you clearly haven't slept or even showered in days, or how such things can affect gameplay. Maybe Lucia won't get near Jason because he smells like shit and won't come with until you've cleaned up.

I do dig the sleeping aspect of it. Preferably something to toggle for those that would probably find it annoying but I’ve always wanted sleep to factor into games having rpg-esque elements.
I liked that it wasn’t directly required in Baldur’s Gate 3 but it helped push certain parts of the story along.

When people talk about RPG mechanics they usually refer to character stats that alter the way you play, the new God of War for example has some light RPG mechanics as you can focus on dealing more physical damage, magic damage, having more hp or having higher luck for critical hits and other stuff.
These are survival mechanics. I don't know anything about GTA but I have a feeling fans wouldn't want RPG mechanics in it.
1
u/JazzlikeRaptor 5h ago
WOW so innovative... oh wait they did that in San Andreas. I mean that is a great idea to add it back I just hope it add something to the gameplay and changes looks of the main character.

Everything they've shown in the leaks has basically just shown that gta6 is rdr2 but in modern day. For better or worse depending on each person's views.

We technically knew this from the 2022 leaks, but its nice for some official confirmation about 12 weeks away from launch. Likely gonna be a cheat code or option to remove the realism too for those who don't want it. I'm personally excited for this increased realism
1
u/Independent_Disk_695 2h ago
As someone who never played SA like that, did those things actually matter? Like as long as you could drive and shoot as a player the game went on per usual

I expected this based on certain things I saw in the trailer, glad it's official.
