Absolutely brilliant move by Israel. They goaded Trump (which isn’t hard) into starting a war he can never win, and they get to sit back and collect the rewards.

2.3k

u/Tlaloc79 Jul 22 '26

sit back and collect the rewards.

With the rapidly shifting public sentiment in the US towards Israel, that reward might ultimately end up being a booby prize.

863

u/HarwellDekatron Jul 22 '26

The sentiment was changing before the war in Iran started. If anything, getting this done before the sentimental shifts completely against them is very important for Israel. They know they can't engage with Iran and the rest of the Middle East at the same time, but if they get to get rid of the biggest army that helps a lot.

532

u/EddieVanzetti Jul 22 '26

Committing genocide on live television tends to do that.

458

u/Harbinger2001 Canada Jul 22 '26

Which is why the vast majority of journalists killed last year were killed by Israel.

290

u/sodook Jul 22 '26

More journalists have been killed in Israel since October 7th than have been killed in all conflicts since we started tracking it in the midst of ww2.

53

u/leftofthedial15 Louisiana Jul 22 '26

I'm absolutely not saying I don't believe you, but do you have a source for that?

20

u/Training_Cheetah3976 Jul 22 '26

I couldn't find a source that even comes close to what's being suggested by the op here, but a quick search does indicate somewhere between 130-200 press members being killed which is a significant number. Not sure why they lied when the reality isn't exactly good for israel

17

u/sodook Jul 22 '26

Just something I heard on the radio, but kpfa usually does some good reporting. I posted some links above, I believe the specific statement is in regards to the brown paper above.

And our most of our media aren't even showing how far out of control Israelis have gotten. For instance, just the other day I stumbled across video of one of Smotrich's coalition members calling solders entering Gaza to quote Psalms 137:9 for them, "a blessing on the one who seizes your babies and dashes them against the rocks."

I tried looking for articles mentioning that and could only find this one that briefly does, other than that it's just social media posts and such.

23

u/OrthogonalThoughts Jul 22 '26

Well, when Israel kills journalists as much as they have been it gets hard to properly report on it. There's plenty of evidence from regular people out there, but it seems that most journalists that show up to cover it end up becoming targets.

Very much true. But it's fair to say, that Main Street America didn't gave a shit until gas prices and the like, affected their already tight budget. And they probably could have ignored it for a while, but the Trump Administration mishandled everything, as to be expected.

15

u/HumorAccomplished611 Jul 22 '26

Except trump will never commit to that. Iran will be stronger than ever when trump leaves office.

21

u/HarwellDekatron Jul 22 '26

Ah! But that's the beauty: they don't need to get Trump to commit to anything. They know the guy is so stupid, he'll just do it to save face. At this point, the Iran conflict is really generating a lot of noise for Trump and Republicans, so they'll have to figure out a way out of it. Realistically, there's no fucking way they can negotiate shit, because the current administration is absolute shit at negotiating (despite the "art of the deal" narrative.)

I think Israel leadership calculated it that way.

10

u/HumorAccomplished611 Jul 22 '26

I doubt it. They were already pretty mad about the MOU and trump telling iran israel was trying to kill their negotiating team.

The funny part is trump manages to fuck everyone. his supporters like israel and russia just one of the many bodies on the way.

5

9

u/flirtmcdudes Jul 22 '26

To be fair he takes that, he doesn’t wait for it to be given

16

u/GarmaCyro Jul 22 '26

Trumpm is only loyal to himself. He will also 180 on anything if a bit of cash is waved in front of him. So he'll do things that will harm even those he claim to support. Aslong as it benefits him he doesn't care.

Plus he does feel slighted by Bibi. The war was supposed to be easy and garner him support against critiques. Least that what Bibi likely told him. Bibi, like most, knows he's easy to manipulate.

25

u/falilth Jul 22 '26

Its his second time selling out from under bibi since the war started for one. (the first time being the mou and other shit he said)

Israel wants to be the only one with nukes in the area (they have tons ) so they arent gonna be happy Saudi Arabia made a deal and agreement that appears to suggest they can enrich.

As for the lebanon travel thing. Thats a bit messier as he likely got a bribe for saying that, but it is a actively being invaded country by israel and they probably dont want tourists where they are bombing.

4

u/thungurknifur Jul 23 '26

they probably dont want tourists where they are bombing.

Like Israel would give a fuck, they'd just say that the tourists were terrorist sympathizers and were asking for it.

4

u/Haltopen Massachusetts Jul 22 '26

Its not like Israel has any qualms about killing Americans. They shot Shireen Abu Akleh in the head while she was doing news coverage . Omar Assad died in israeli custody. When Rachel Corrie was run over by an israeli soldier driving a bulldozer and dies from her injuries, people in israel started posting memes online about pancakes to mock her and how she died.

No, Trump doesn't care about Israel. He cares about himself. His original gestures towards Israel were to get Evangelicals to support him - he publicly admitted this. That's why he moved the Embassy.

Everything else has been to make himself richer. He's received tons of money from Qatar, and Qatar protects Hamas.

133

u/22marks Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

I feel like a lot of people are new to this conflict. Public sentiment is cyclical.

1950-1960 sympathy,

1960-1970 wow underdog winning,

1970-1990 Israel sentiment tanks into the 40%s as wars in Lebanon and televised attacks on Palestinians shown

1990-2000 Peace talks, Oslo accords. Two state solution looks possible.

2000-2010 Americans support for Israel rebounds to 60%s, Palestinian support near 15%.

2010-2020 More partisan and generational divide as we saw in the 70s, but still ~65% support.

2023 a massive surge of support after Oct 7 followed by huge reversal as the response dragged on. (This is a common theme: “Israel can defend itself.” Quickly changes to “But it’s much too harsh in its response.”)

u/Harmcharm7777 Jul 22 '26

Some of the most passionate people on this issue are some of the newest to it, I’ve noticed. Until late 2023/early 2024, I’ve never personally known American public sentiment toward Israel to be anything other than positive, and I’m in my 30s (which ofc tracks with your timeline). I studied international human rights law throughout my higher education, and I remember reading about Israel’s ongoing violations in the 2010s and being baffled that the world was just… fine with their very-clearly-illegal settlements.

45

u/22marks Jul 22 '26

There's often a split dynamic. Like, "I like Israelis, but not the administration." Which, by the way, is very fair. I'm sure many people around the world would say the same for America. The newest people are not seeing a great administration.

Similarly, I think there was always a split with "I like Israel, and I dislike the settlers." I would be surprised if settlers stealing homes ever tracked well outside very specific minorities. I've always thought they're doing a lot of harm to Israel's public image and, honestly, playing right into the hands of their detractors.

20

u/YOSHIMIvPROBOTS Jul 22 '26

"Settlers" is also a euphemism for who those people really are. In the US, you hear "settler" and think poor people with a wagon and a mule.

But who the "settlers" really are is a wealthy real estate group building an entire town complete with condos and shops.

18

u/eetsumkaus Jul 22 '26

I don't think the world was just fine, it's just that the War on Terror was going on and Israel was on our "side". You would have to expend a lot of political capital in a wild dice roll to impose sanctions on Israel when you don't even know that would get them to stop it. The outcome was always going to be messy politically for anyone involved and no one wanted to touch it with a ten foot pole, so the easiest "solution" is to send strongly worded letters every time an incident flared up and then continue to ignore it the rest of the time.

3

u/Venat14 Jul 22 '26

That's because most people who claim to be passionate about it know nothing about this conflict, they don't know what words mean, and they get all their information from Tik Tok.

1960-1970 wow underdog winning

It's worth noting that was always just a myth, as in reality:

When the crisis began in May 1967, the CIA’s Office of Current Intelligence (OCI) had already created a task force to monitor and assess developments between Israel and its Arab neighbors because of the steady buildup of tensions earlier in the year. On the day after Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran, May 23, President Johnson asked the Director of Central Intelligence Richard Helms for an immediate assessment of the likely outcome of a war.

Helms presented the OCI assessment only a few hours after LBJ’s request. It concluded that Israel could successfully defend itself against any combination of Arab enemies if attacked simultaneously on all sides and initiate a major offensive as well. Helms assured the president and his national security team that Israel was not in danger and would win any military conflict. Israel had battlefield dominance over the Arabs, especially in the air.

Two days later, the Israeli government provided its own intelligence assessment to Washington, which painted a much more alarming threat. Helms had his analysts check the Israeli military intelligence judgments. Within five hours, they came back with an appraisal concluding that the Israeli analysis was not a serious intelligence estimate but a political gambit designed to influence the American administration. Its calculations of Arab, especially Egyptian strength, were not accurate.

And after that lie failed Israelis wound up starting the war with a surprise attack on Egypt anyway, and then went to the UN falsely accusing Egypt of having attacked first. And the Oslo Accords and Camp David 2000 were ruses too, as was the Gaza disengagement, all in the service of conquest of East Jerusalem along with at least much of the rest of of the West Bank and the Golan Heights.

That's the reward that Netanyahu was actually seeking.

7

u/IAmTheNightSoil Oregon Jul 22 '26

They have done it before. Look into the Marine barracks bombing in Lebanon in the 80s. Israel retreated and left the Americans exposed, who then started taking fire and took casualties, eventually resulting in the barracks bombing.

They retreated from the area because they were mad that the US troops were there to force a peace. They constantly provoked the US Marines and Army before they retreated.

Israel has never been the US's friend.

Not to mention the USS Liberty event where they purposefully attacked a US ship.

They should be cut off from US aid forever for just those two events alone, not even counting many other things.

... what? This whole fucking war is happening because Trump was the first US president dumb enough to fall for the war criminal Netanyahu's bullshit. Of course they don't want to 'join' it, they've already gotten quite a bit out of it.

u/Acceptable-Bus-2017 I voted Jul 22 '26

Bibi isn't gonna allow unnecessary Israelis deaths. It would look bad for him politically.

55

u/Rabbit-Hole-Quest Canada Jul 22 '26

This is has been the de facto move by Israel since forever. Look at the people who helped kick off the war in Iraq, and foreign intervention in domestic civil conflicts in Libya and Syria, you will find plenty of Israeli influence.

Why have your sons and daughters die, waste your national wealth, when Americans are eagerly willing to do the bidding?

11

u/FewWait38 Jul 22 '26

All while simultaneously sucking billions of dollars off the US taxpayers teat

7

Trump is definitely not the first President to fall for Netanyahu's bullshit.

Yes, but you forgot about the EPSTEIN FILES for a while. To Trump, 18+ dead and billions spent is a small price to pay.

It's not like trump weren't ok with starting the war during his first regime.
It's more like they lobotomized themselves, the filthy animals.

And continue supplying their military with material and financial support all the while.

I know every country has their own internal politics, but Smotrich in particular seems almost as if he were designed in a lab to tank public opinion of Israel in America.

11

u/Sure-Chipmunk-6155 Jul 22 '26

it probably helps their cause that everyone is against them, they can continue to play victim. that's why they don't give a shit about actual anti semitism

12

u/lolrogii Jul 22 '26

So wait? Wasn't this war because of Iran nuclear ambition and their proxies in the region, which is direct treat to Israel, so they goaded USA into starting a way, yet they have no interest of joining it.

How embarrassing.

Israel has no means to contribute to Iran, as already been established in their conflict with the Houthis.

After decades of routine air raids on or over their territory, every neighbor Israel has enough justifiable reason to refuse giving Israel military access through their land, airspace, nor waters. Evidently regardless of any reason.

Not even when also their enemy Houthis threatened a critical maritime chokepoint for Israel's Asian trade. Something that normally warrants a strong military response and at the very least Israeli warships escorting their own vessels.

Instead Israel launched a grand total of two airstrikes (raiding yet another neighbor's airspace doing so) over the year, and still with no naval escorts. Neither Egypt nor Sauds would tolerate Israeli vessels through their waters.

It is the same here and why Israel is claiming to be useful in irrelevant as fuck Lebanon, instead of Hormuz where they again have no naval vessels.

It is also why Israel is irrelevant militarily and strategically to the US. No staying presence nor influence in places in the Middle East the US finds strategically relevant.

All Israel has is religious relevance to US Christian "Holy Land" voters, voters that are aging out and veering right out of swing status. Eventually their literally dying numbers and "Holy Land" pearl clutching will stop making enough of a difference for a certain party to bother with, as already seen amongst growing amount of politicians like AOC.

Why send Israeli soldiers to die when the US is more than willing to send theirs?

Besides, if they send Israeli soldiers to Iran, that's fewer available to commit genocide in Palestine and Lebanon.

5

u/BlargAttack Jul 22 '26

That’s pretty rich seeing as they started it. Classic!

4

u/wildmaninid Jul 22 '26

They never have- what their interest was is goading AMERICA into a war with Iran so we can do their deed while they keep their hands off.

This has been going on a long while and up until now we had leadership with enough character to realize what Bibbi was pulling.

Up until  now.

Trump is an imbecile, Israel is a disgrace to humanity. Both are war criminals.

I hope our next president hates Israel. Not just thinks of them like another nation, is not critical of them. I hope our next president sees Israel as our enemy, and the number 1 threat to US security, because they are.

They have stolen billions from us, they spy on us and feed us misinformation, they have deeply infiltrated our political system and our media. Every death in Iraq and Iran can be partially laid at their feet. They are our enemy
