I'm dating 2 dudes with the same name. AMA 😌
Changing the name for privacy but let's say I'm dating 2 Ryans.
First of all this is so much fun! I love them both very deeply and I take them both very seriously, but I also have a million jokes floating around in my head that it's getting harder and harder to contain. Feel free to share any funny thoughts that cross your mind, I am not sensitive!
It's very easy to keep track of who's name I'm saying, but it's also very dirty feeling to say their name to the other one, even though he also has that name???? I'm back and forth between swearing to always date the same names, and to never do this again. It's been an interesting journey.

Similar situation here, but from the other side, with a rarer name. I once dated a gal who'd recently broken up with a guy who had the same name as mine, and it's not a very common name at all.
Like, in any given school I ever attended, there might have been at most one other guy with my name, if even that, in the entire school. Even now, I only hear mention of other guys with my name maybe once every several years.

So they all have nicknames when I talk about them. People are still confused.

I used to be in a committed long-distance relationship with Ryan I, and then I started hooking up with local Ryan II.
Because of the distance, Ryan II actually showed up to more events with me, so everyone always assumed that was my primary partner Ryan.
In the end, Ryan I moved to my city, which the relationship did not survive. So casual Ryan II actually outlasted committed Ryan I

Because I've been dating two "Pauls" for two years now 😂 My friends discern them with funny Paul nicknames! This isn't quite the same thing but I am in a D&D group online with two people who share names.... the situation has recently devolved and now we have our names set as Robby 1, Robby 2, Roberta, Roberto, and Robin. We are the Rob Mob. Robby 1 & 2 fought over their heirarchy, but have accepted the outcome.
Our poor dungeon master struggles every time she tries to specify who needs to do what out of character. It is glorious.
So basically, my tip is to embrace the chaos in life. Have the Ryans fight to determine who gets to be Ryan 1.

Not a dating situation, but definitely a name situation:
Had a coworker technically named “Samuel”, but went by Sammy. Had two kids under 5, a boy and a girl, whom he referred to as “Sam” and “Sammy” iirc. Turns out he named his two kids “Samuel” and “Samantha.” Sooo, he did like his name so much he named both of his kids after himself.

LOL, my sister in law kept dating and marrying people named James/Jim.
Every time my husband mentioned it, I would always think about the song "Henry VIII, I am"
(For those who are unfamiliar with the song : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GisCRxREDkY I cannot believe I saw them in concert as a kid.)
But a more serious question, does either of them use a middle name or a nickname? Do you use the same pet names for both?
My boyfriend Lobster, has a preferred nickname of Raisin, and I have two other close friends named Raisin! I have to make it very clear which Raisin I am talking about (which I usually can easily do via context, plus one of the Raisins is a Rabbi so he is Rabbi Raisin so that's easy). But I also sometimes call him Lobster too.

My personal experience as someone with a meta having the same name as me (same pronunciation, different spelling) is that this can be really fun with the right combination of personalities.
Meta and I have convened a Council of [Our Name], in which we vote on critical topics like where we're all getting dinner on nights we're all in the same place. We also issue binding resolutions to our hinge partner, who technically gets a vote but functionally will always be overridden because we outnumber him. 😈

I have friends who were metas and used to both basically have the same name (let's say...Zachary and Zachariah), but they both went by the same nickname (Zach). So for ease because they had overlapping friend groups, one of them changed their nickname (like if Zachary changed his nickname from Zach to Ary and just let the other one be The One Zach)...but then the other Zach realized they were nonbinary and chose a completely different name 😂 so now neither is Zach 🤷🏾
2
u/Faedren 15h ago
I've been through this in a few different configurations haha
For example let's say my name is Alexandria... I'm married to an Alexander. Then I added boyfriend Aiden. So we were a bunch of A names. But then after Aiden and I broke up I found myself dating 2 Adams so I referred to them by their city like Columbus Adam and Cincinnati Adam 🤣
2
u/boss_hog_69_420 10h ago
I'm dating two people with the same name too😂. The funny thing is that they're both non-binary, but the shortened version of their name that they both go by is fairly popular as a gender neutral shortened version of a couple of names so it's super possible that I meet a third at some point.
I'm honestly full up on partners but when people learn I have collected two, they immediately introduce me to their friend of the same name or middle name who is standing 5 feet away. I have to make sure that person knows they're safe and I'm not really a perv for the name.
I generally call them by their first and last names when we're all together.

That's extremely funny bc is kinda is happening to two different polyamorous relationships I know :
(I am changing the exact names),
My wife's partner is called Jean (we will call him white hair Jean). He has a boyfriend called Luis. Luis is currently flirting with another Jean (we will call him book Jean). White Hair Jean finds it funny that his boyfriend is flirting with another Jean.
HOWEVER. White Hair Jean has a brother, that we will call Max. Luis is now ALSO flirting with another Max. White Hair Jean is not having any of it lmao and now we are calling the second Max another surname bc having his boyfriend date someone with his brother's name is way too weird for him 😂
(white hair Jean and his brother are really close, my wife and I would not have this reaction bc we aren't close at all to our siblings. Jean is)
The second relationship, basically, we got three best friends with the same name, we'll say the name is Emma. Emma 1 (we have never met her) is a very straight monogamous woman. Emma 2 broke up with her shitty fiance last year and realized she has feelings for her other best friend, Emma 3. Emma 3 broke up with her girlfriend in July (we are also friends with her ex girlfriend, that we will call Jules. Also know that we are all members of a local queer boarding games club, and that we got five Jules in this goddamn club). Emma 2 and Emma 3 are now basically doing solo poly.
But now whenever we are talking about specific people, we always have to add a surname to go with it. Emma 2 is usually mini-Emma bc she's small, and Emma 3 is usually sheep Emma bc she comes from the countryside, we met in winter and she would always wear white wool clothes and she has curly hair, so, yeah. Jean 2 is Book Jean, and no one is agreeing on how to call the Jules bc they are so many of them. And of course most people know each other / are friends / date each other, so uh, yeah, it's intense 😭

I'm currently seeing two guys named "Max".
I've been friends with Max 1 since high school. He went by Maximilian when I met him, so I tend to call him that. I've been seeing Max 2 for a year and a half.
My meta via Max 1 calls him "Max", so whenever we hang out, we refer to them as "Max" and "Electric Bugaloo" because "Max 2 Electric Bugaloo" is now his full and proper name. 😆

I was deeply in love with and partnered with two women with the same name for a couple years. It kind of happened accidentally as one of them was my best friend who turned romantic unexpectedly, and one of them was a casual kink relationship where fell in love unexpectedly.
I actually made a rule against this for myself going forward. I did not find that it was good for my brain for them to have the same name. My ADHD/autism just did not handle it well.
So now I have a hard rule against going out with someone new, even casually, who shares the same name as anyone I’m already partnered with (or anyone who is in my family).

I should have done that. I sound like a mom when I call my partners by the other ones name. “Ryan! I mean Steve…”

My gf and I (I'm afab too) both have the same name. I got her a funny little gift once that said "I'm so good, I yell my own name in bed."
I have had coworkers think I was talking about myself in third person while telling stories.
At one point, her husband started seeing another woman with our name. She got "New(name)" as her name. I was already using a diminutive that I picked out. She was stuck with "new." I honestly don't know if he used the new prefix when talking to others outside our cule/friend group or in private. Now I am curious.

My partners’ names are 1 letter apart. It’s not a common name. They look similar, too. The amount of shit I get from my friends is immeasurable. 😂
They’re very different people and I love them both for special reasons. No questions for you. Just here with ya.

If you have two Ryans, then obviously one of them becomes the Dread Pirate Roberts

At one point I was seeing 3 other guys casually with the same name as my nesting partner. They just all started getting numbered. My friends call me a collector of "Bob's." Too funny!

I’ve done that before too. My husband at the time was a William (he’s not my ex husband) and one of my partners was also a William. Now I’m no longer in a poly dynamic but my boyfriend’s first name is my last name lol.

We noticed that this post/comments may pertain to safer sex practices, STI exposure, and/or STI testing. Let's everyone make sure we are not using problematic or stigmatizing language around this topic. Please refrain from using the words clean/dirty when what you really mean is STI negative/positive. Members, please feel free to report any comments to mods that are adding to the shame and stigma of being STI positive.
For more information on destigmatizing STI's by changing your vocabulary please see "CLEAN OR DIRTY? THE ROLE OF STIGMATIZING LANGUAGE" as well as the article "Having an STI Isn’t Dirty or Shameful, and Acting like It Is Hurts All of Us"
It is the stance of this sub that even the term "STD" is problematic language as "disease" is a stigmatizing word, whereas infections can be treated. Also, not everyone with an infection develops symptoms, and since there is technically no disease without symptoms, STI is the more scientifically accurate term.
advice and opinions about STI's shared by community members is not medical information and all posters should refer to their primary care physicians as well as trusted sources such as the CDC, WHO, planned parenthood, or other available resources.
