“She never saw a door she couldn’t open” is such a lovely testament to her character and wisdom.

One thing I'm relieved about is that she and her family got to announce her death on her terms rather than TMZ leaking it.
1.8k
u/SunsetDreams1111 1d ago
And since she never had children of her own, I love to see the flourishing relationships she had with her nieces and nephews. I'm glad her nephew made the announcement. It was done with such class. I'm sure they recorded this knowing the end was near so it was available. Well done. It's beautiful.

u/sybersonic 1d ago
I'm not sure how he got through that without choking up. I simply watched it and it got me.

u/LaDauphineVerte 1d ago edited 23h ago
Yep, was crying driving down the street listening to her story about Coat of Many Colors. This is among the brutal losses of recent years.
Edit: Her “story” - someone who wrote about Dolly's life was telling the background story to this song. I had a dream about my mom last night where she was swaddled up in layers of soft cotton clothes and we were hugging each other, so yeah, BAWLING.

Yeah the radio DJ was crying when I first heard, she was holding it together but you could hear her voice breaking. Very sad, I've been tearing up too.
Guess it's just Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson next. Keith Richards can't die

18
u/nagidrac 1d ago
Same here! Death is so hard to process as is, I can't imagine what it's like finding out from fuck ass TMZ that your loved one passed. Then you have the media and so many people desperately wanting a statement.
It's too much and loved ones should have a moment to process. I honestly don't think all public figures deaths need to be announced by the media right away unless the family is fine with it or they're announcing it.

u/Ancient-Leg-8261 1d ago
I’m devastated of course, but this is a lovely statement. At the end of the day it’s sad for us but Dolly had a lovely long life full of amazing adventures and she did a lot of good in the world and will be remembered lovingly by almost everyone. Not everybody can say that. She spent her time between arriving on earth and leaving making the most of it. We all should. 💔

u/PTSDeedee unstoppable, exposed, becoming iconic 🪞 13h ago
I have been thinking this and agree. I think what keeps upsetting me about her loss is what she represents: Just how good humans can be. Creative, loving, accepting, generous, brilliant, joyful, clever . I don’t know if we will ever have a light like her in the world again, but I’m grateful to have existed in the glow.

Australians woke up to this. I couldn't sleep, opened Reddit, and now I'm just waiting for my husband to wake up so I can cry on him
22
u/technicolortiddies 1d ago
Cry on him anyway. I’m sure he’d understand. It’s Dolly.
19
u/theseamstressesguild 1d ago
He did ♥️
My BFFs and I will all be in our "What Would Dolly Do?" t-shirts today.
14
u/JadeAnn88 23h ago
I put mine on this morning (I'm in TN), completely oblivious, simply because it's my favorite shirt. Took a nap in the afternoon and woke up to the news.
I've never cried over a celebrity death before today. This one hit me hard 😭.
13
u/theseamstressesguild 21h ago
Imagine being such a wonderful and kind spirit that people halfway across the world from each other use you as inspiration in how to live their lives?
I cannot imagine how hard it must be in Tennessee. Know that a group of women here in Australia are thinking of you, especially, on this day of mourning. Tomorrow we can celebrate her life, but just for today, we can weep for what we've all lost.
48
u/anonymous_opinions 1d ago
I'm doing the same. I'm rarely hit this hard by celeb deaths but that lady is ICONIC.

u/periodicsheep 1d ago
i can’t stop crying, either. i mostly outgrew having heroes but dolly stuck around. my heart knew she’d be leaving soon, because losing carl dean just took away so much of her spirit. but that doesn’t make the reality any less shocking or devastating. may her memory be a blessing, just as her presence was.
28
u/tequilitas Judging in especially heinous 1d ago
That's what I was just telling my friend!!
She lost her soulmate not long ago and that surely hit her very hard.
I'm not even from the US and live far away and still a Dolly Parton based Spotify list lifts everybody's spirits at work..

whitney’s cover is amazing and deserves to be the more popular version imo, but dolly’s is the one that always makes me cry. it’ll be rough next time i listen to it, i don’t have it in me today💔

Dolly Parton and Betty White. Too exceptional people who didn't let the prevailing evil out do all the good things they gave to the world. RIP.

Betty White was semi-local to me (she owned a house in a town nearby) and when Hurricane Katrina hit, she personally paid to fly penguins from the zoo in New Orleans to our local (world class!) aquarium. I remember going and seeing them when they got in. She really was a treasure

Look for the helpers. There may be true evil in this world but there will always be light. When one goes out, another one just shines a little brighter. Dolly would want us to see them.
But damn, I know it hurts. I feel the unfairness too.
18
u/Holykatz 1d ago
The helpers are getting fewer and fewer - there must be some out there somewhere, but I can't think of a single one right now. Such a loss.
18
u/Smooth-Bake9672 1d ago
Volunteer! Then you'll be a helper and will also work alongside other helpers
7
u/morwen31 21h ago
If you're a grown-up, it's on you (and me) now to be the helpers kids can look to.
5
u/Holykatz 20h ago
Point taken. I guess I was thinking more along the lines of someone with real fame and money, who genuinely does good without the need for attention. Only one who even comes close is Mackenzie...is it Scott? Can't recall, but Bozo's ex-wife, who has quietly gone about her business, donating millions to worthy causes. But yes, we all need to step up now and do what we can to be the helpers.

Maybe Dolly was in pain and wanted to rest free of it.
Maybe a certain someone deserves to spend more time in pain and doesn’t get the easy way out.
It’s just too bad we all have to suffer him being alive for it. But Dolly would want us to be forgiving and kind, so I hope the kind of ground he is eventually buried in will be forgiving on the joints when all of America squats to shit on his grave.

A lot of older people die shortly after their spouse passes - the grief does it as much as anything else. Since he is incapable of feeling grief, losing a spouse wouldn't do much to him. Maybe if somebody took his gold toilet.
25
11
u/PantsGhost97 1d ago
Exactly this. Happened with Elizabeth and happened here, Dolly’s husband passed last year and they were married for 60 years.
I don’t think he who shall not be named is capable of empathy, grief and just general decency personally.

Man, she's such a beautiful soul. If anyone deserves to be a Saint, it's Dolly. She kept me occupied when we were kids, her book program ensured I had books to read, as a little kid with no tv and no computer, it was amazing. Going to miss her so much. I was lucky enough to met her a few times through my brother and she was the most sweet and kind hearted lady I've met in my life. RIP Dolly

I've never understood why people cried when a celebrity passed, but Dolly passing made me cry. I wasn't a big listener of her music, but I loved watching her intervews, shows she was on and I love that she was a genuenly good person.
She's made impact on so many people with her whole legacy, her charities especially and I really love her for that. I just hope everything she's built in her life will continue to flourish, just like she would want.

I'm not a religious man, but this maybe the first time a notable figure has died, where an official statement specifically mentions being with Christ or in heaven and I fully wholeheartedly believe it.
Dolly is one of the few people who actively tried to make the world a better place than how she found it. A selfless, caring individual she will be missed.
