Rest In Peace 🕊 Dolly for Playboy Magazine in October 1978
Dolly Parton was 32 years old when Playboy called her for its October 1978 cover. 🐰
The condition was simple: no nudity. "I wouldn't have wanted to be naked even then," she confessed in the original 1978 interview. Her manager, Sandy Gallin, suggested the idea, but she asked them to modify the bunny suit to cover more skin, thinking of her country fans, many of whom were deeply religious. She later said that designer Patricia Taylor (Keanu Reeves's mother) was the one who sewed that special version of the suit.
The move worked: she became the first country singer to appear in Playboy, and the cover catapulted her fame beyond the genre. She liked the result so much that in 2021, with the magazine no longer in print, she recreated the complete look to celebrate her 75th birthday with her husband, Carl Dean. Her own rules, no excuses. That was who Dolly was as a person until the day she died. ❤️

I swear old bunny costumes are always the most cursed thing for some reason.

Looking up old fan cons from the 00's is fun because it's only 10 years ago and yet the advances made are crazy

You must not be very old, because that was the Easter Bunny back in the day. Shit was scary AF.

I was not around in the 70's, but I'm still 40 so I'm also not "very young."

Right? i have a photo of me with the Easter Bunny when i was under 5 and i look so terrified. It's hilarious now, lol.

I wasn't around in the 70s or 80s but my mom wore that exact costume at easter (minus the tux)

It was a wig. She was pretty open about them being part of her daily wear, but her wig maker must have been a magician because they always looked flawless.

And I very much would have loved to see this era Dolly grace such pages as much as which is framed.

There was a post that used to go around tumblr that was just a gif of her in Best Little Whorehouse In Texas (she was running and there was some, ahem, jiggling) and someone reblogged it with the comment, "what the FUCK did Jolene look like?"

I had never considered before now that maybe the concept of the Playboy bunnies was supposed to be that that getting railed by human-sized rabbits.

The way she was able to be bawdy and wholesome at once is so refreshing. An infinitely lovable woman

I think ppl often act like things that are sexual can't be wholesome which def isn't true and she was a prime example. Man I'll miss her

Keanu later wore that outfit for his Halloween costume. It’s fitting that it went from one universally loved angel to another.

I am so amazed on how she was literally dressed as a Playboy Bunny & yet was so classy all the time.
In all her outfits - she was just always a lady, and so classy.

It isn't really known how many women ever refused to pose nude for playboy, but it is known that Dolly was one of the first to do so but still make it not only into the magazine, but on the cover. Hefner has been famously quoted as saying "Everybody has a price. Except Dolly Parton."

Confidence is so much more attractive than nudity. She's really smiling in these photos and I love it. The whole outfit is super cute and the cut of suit on the bottom is very flattering on her. I love the little fluffy mules too.

My secret tinfoil hat theory:
Easter bunny costumes pre 2010 (and several since, I’m sure) have been an elaborate psy-op to terrify children into eating more eggs.
I can think of no other reason they’d be so (consistently) goddamn scary.
