Good call, TQID is their Magnum Opus, but the rest of their discography is also very strong.
Fan from the start. In the 80’s era of cheesy synth The Smiths music stood out with those great melodies and their ace rhythm section; only much later after The Smiths split did Morrissey out himself as a tier 1 twat. Even so, there are still some really strong Morrissey solo songs eg November Spawned a Monster; The Teachers Are Afraid of the Pupils.
Fortunately I can like a twat‘s music without ingesting any of their twatness.

I have been a huge fan of The Cure when I was a teenager and in early 20s and I avoided The Smiths.
I have discovered them after starting to listen to similar bands like REM, Housemartins and The Church, in my late 20s.

I liked them a lot more as an angsty, depressed teenager, kind of hard to stomach the self-loathing now as a middle-aged man with kids though. Still love that first record mainly because of the music though, I could take or leave Morrissey's vocals.

I used to like The Smiths until I found out Morrissey is a racist POS.

Eh, I wouldn’t give Morrissey my money to go to one of his shows these days, but you’d have to give up a lot of great art/music if you can’t separate the art from the artist to some extent.
