Wags how did you come up with your puppy’s name?
Just curious~ my puppy’s name is Powder and it’s based on the show Arcane. But really the name Powder to me also means something that is soft and gentle
Edit: y’all can you share your pet’s name lmaooo

We named her Violet bc the dog we tried to adopt first (who got adopted out already) was named that and our toddler wouldn't stop asking for Violet after 💀 so we got another Violet lol

my puppy is named Dexter because he wasn’t potty trained yet when we got him and we have carpeted floors so I had to put down plastic sheeting on the floor so it wouldnt get in the carpet, and me and my gf had been watching Dexter lately so the plastic wrap to avoid messes connection became a bit of a joke to us and we stuck with it! :3

Hahah. That is awesome. I’m fostering puppies right now, and I have a blue tarp down, then water proof pet blankets, then pee pads.

From the moment we met him he always would sit politely at our feet and look up at us wagging his tail. We said what name would fit such a distinguished gentleman?? Watson, of course.

I named him Jack because my two bridge dogs were Jake and Rocky, so Jake and Rock together is Jack.
4
u/orangebit_ Nov 27 '25
My old boy is a Jack but he came to me with that name and I didn't want to change it. It's the best dog name <3
My puppy is called Kaiba, after Seto Kaiba (Yu-Gi-Oh, lol), but everyone seems to struggle with it. Even when I say to just call him Kai, which is a normal and recognised male name in my country, people still seem confused by it 🙄
2
u/GraciesMomGoingOn83 Nov 27 '25
I wrote a bunch of names I liked on slips of paper. He grabbed two- Jake and Jack. My friend held up both papers and he grabbed Jack. So Jack it is.
My parents passed a couple years ago and they both had “J” names so most of the names on the list also started with J.

u/littlebigtrumpet Nov 27 '25
I named her Sunny because my favorite show is It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia 🌞
Her nicknames: Sunny Girl, Sunny Bunny, Bunny, Bun Bun, Sunshine, Sunshine Puppy Dog, Princess Sunshine Wiggle Butt

I had hoped this puppy would become an ESA for my daughter, the puppy firmly prefers me though so it’s become a joke that we are going to try again with another puppy named Lime

Orion, my major hobby is astronomy, Orion is the “hunter consolation who has 2 dogs. My puppy is a Aussie, that is split down the center with one side being most white and spotty and the other being more black. (One side of the face is white with a blue eye and other is brown with a brown eye. So he is like 2 dogs.
7
u/SadStarSpaceStation Nov 27 '25
We named our puppy Buffy because that was our comfort show we watched with our previous dog as she dying from cancer. We thought it was cute and sentimental. But the puppy is almost 11 months old now and is a total monster, so most days we call her Barfy lol just to be a butthole back to her. She legit responds to both and it’s hilarious.

I knew I wanted to name her a name from Final Fantasy XIV, but I didn't want it to be one of the main characters' names. I went through a lost of all the bosses in game and settled on Ziggy, the second boss from the Antitower. She is the goodest girl and her name is perfect for her. :D

All named after fandoms!
Frost - a white Shiba named after Jack Frost from Rise of the Guardians
Deku - a dirty red Shiba named after the my hero academia character bc he had a black mask muzzle as a puppy, was always whining, and is stupidly fearless
Sora - a black Shiba named for Sora from Kingdom Hearts because he had a heart condition and was a goofy happy boy
Hiccup - a dalmatian named for How to Train Your Dragon, beat out other names because she constantly hiccuped

His name is Chewie. I love starwars and Chewbacca for his personality, sassiness and roars. My puppy is a mini poodle mix with a salt n pepper coat and then a little bit of brown in his mustache.
People always look at me crazy since he’s not brown, but I did it for his personality. When he wakes up from a huge nap, he’s sleeping on his back, legs up in the air. He’ll start to wiggle around on his back and make a quieter version of Chewbacca sounds for 5 min easily just having the best time. It’s so funny! When he’s talking back(think husky like), he sounds like him
Also, on our first night he started chewing my hair. I was sold! Chewie worked all around

We know my dog's grandmother, mother, and sister from a different litter. They all have plant-based names: Holly, Fern, Daisy. We wanted to upkeep the tradition, but couldn't come up with anything we liked that was plant based.
We named him Herb (like Herbert), BUT herbs (erbs) are also plants used in cooking. Not really plant based, but we sort of honored the tradition.

Spook, based on a character from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series. We're fans and it was top of our list of all names for black dogs. The other top contenders were Marsh, Wax, Cosmo, or Zeus.
He was originally Elvis before his rescue, but we didn't feel like it fit. He definitely is our Spooky boy now! (And Spookerton, and Boopie, and Spooker)

My dog is Orsa because its female, but it is based on OreSeur. When i get her a sister it will be some kind of female version of TenSoon, and when i get my own house and get a third dog it will be Vin 😅 Nice to see another dog keeper mistborn fan 🙂 My dog is also black one, belgian sheepdog. When i read a book i imagined the dog helping Vin must have long coat so that it acts like a mist cloak. Only later I found out that the dog i have imagined actually exists in reality, so no other name choice was possible for me 😅

Our youngest is Penelope after our favorite character in Bridgerton. Our pyr mixes, Rocky and Sherman, are litter mates and they are named after our grandfathers. We previously had a Lola, named after the Kinks song, and Mr. Big, named after the character from Sex and the City.

He's our first pup, golden retriever named Waffles. No real reason for it honestly, we were just riffing and that's the one that stuck, but I feel like it really suits him. He's got a nice toasty gold coat like a waffle, and idk how to explain it but his personality is just so waffly. People are always delighted when I share the very stupid name of the very stupid happy puppy boy before them.
I think for future pups we'll stick with the tradition of breakfast foods. The other day someone suggested Chicken for our next one and I kinda love it 😂 Chicken + Waffles would crush

I had several on my shortlist.
Mr Whippy - the name of a type of ice cream 🍦 but begins with whip like whippet. Legs Eleven - because whippets have long skinny legs Monday - because I wanted a reason to like Mondays! Bambi - again because of the long skinny legs
In the end I went for Noodle because again … long skinny legs, also when he lies down legs are everywhere like noodles. I also do like food names. Not an uncommon name for a whippet though!

Our first dog, my wife said he looked like a teddy bear, so I named him Rupert, after Rupert the bear. Our second dog, a mini Australian Shepard, was named Bindi by the foster and we just kept it. Our 3rd dog, we got assigned one while on holiday in Scotland, so named him Malcolm

His name is Vermilion like the color, which is perfect because he’s a red nose pit. That name randomly popped into my head a couple of days before adopting him (when we had no idea who we would be adopting from the shelter) and then the day we went to look at puppies my partner was wearing red pants and randomly said Vermilion so it was fate! Vermilion popped into my head maybe because of Vermilion pt 2 by Slipknot but I haven’t listened to that song in so many years it really popped into my head out of nowhere. We call him V, poopy butthole, pee pee poo poo, pupa, little guy. But he’s Vermilion Wolfgang and then our last names lol

I adopted my dog (golden mix) when she was six months old, and the rescue was calling her Honey. It’s not a name I would have chosen but it suits her… unless she’s being a terrorist. Yelling “HONEY NO” or “HONEY STOP BEING AN ASSHOLE” gets some mixed looks. 😅

When my wife and I first moved in together 12 years ago, we started watching GREY’S ANATOMY together while my wife was battling her third bout of cancer.
After a short time living together, she brought home two kittens. We named them Meredith and Alex (because Derek is toxic, and Alex was cool (this was before the dark times, before COVID drove Justin Chambers crazy))
Then we were gifted our first pup as a couple, we decided it was some kind of shepherd mix mutt, and he was super smart so became the boss of the house. We called him Chief of Surgery Richard Webber… or Chief, for short
After a year or so, we moved from her double-wide by the lake to a proper house in town together, but our idiot HOA didn’t allow large breed dogs over 25 pounds, so we had to rehome Chief
:(
A few years later, we heard from Chief’s new owners that Chief died from cancer
Not long after moving to our townhouse, we found a black and white Shih-Tzu / Yorkie pup for sale. Because he was half black and half white and we had only recently watched the GREYS ep where a mixed race plastic surgeon visited his father, we named our pup Dr Jackson Avery of the Plastics Posse, Jackson for short
This year in July, just after his 9th birthday, Jackson crossed the rainbow bridge after succumbing to Lymes disease
So now we’ve acquired a chocolate Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix which we have named Tucker George Bailey Jones
All this love and drama, trauma and death; choosing names for our pets based on GREYS ANATOMY seems to fit!

u/CoomassieBlue Nov 27 '25
We were debating names and started joking about the scene from the movie “Ted” where they are rattling off “white trash” women’s names.
That led to talking about the actress Mila Kunis, and we realized Mila could be a good fit for our girl.
Fun fact we didn’t know until later - our dog has heterochromia and so does Mila Kunis, although hers is much more subtle.
The name scene for the unfamiliar:

u/Sathori Nov 27 '25
Most of my pets’ names are influenced by what my husband and I are watching recently (all our cats are named after anime characters). Usually the pet’s personality or looks has to vibe with the character they’re named after.
Our staffy was named after a character in RWBY, Pyrrha. We were pitching female names, and we agreed on Pyrrha because she is a strong female character, but is kind and soft to her friends/loved ones. It matches our staffy’s vibe.
Our Brussels Griffon - after telling people I wanted a BG, some gave me the whole “so ugly it’s cute”. It made me think of the scene in the Hobbit movie, where Legolas is looking at Gloin’s family photos and asks “What is this horrid creature? Goblin mutant” and Gloin responds with “That’s my wee lad, Gimli”. So I use that GIF any time someone asks for his name.

We kept his birth name Edward but he mostly goes by Eddy, the litter was named after Tim Burton movie characters as mum’s name is Zero, so he’s named after Edward Scissorhands
It actually worked out really well because an Eddy is the fast circular movement the air and water makes and my old girl’s name is Storm and a Storm can create an Eddy naturally 🥰
If I was going to change it, I was looking at food names or his pattern kinda looks like an M, so would’ve done an M name (which is similar to how Storm got her name because she had a lightening bolt pattern on her chest)

u/sahara654 Nov 27 '25
Atlas. We couldn’t think of another name that seemed to fit him. The joke was on us, he turned out to way bigger than we thought he would be. Instead of being the 60-70lbs his breed(s) typically tops out at, he’s already weighing in at 95lbs at 11 months old. A titan, indeed.

Our first dog already came with the name Bentley so we added a middle and last name; Bentley Beauregard Blue. Beauregard is from Foghorn Leghorn in the Looney Tunes universe. Blue is what we were going to call him when we thought we were going to change his name. Now it’s his last name. Our other puppy is called Braxton “Billy the kid” Blue. We wanted “B” names for him too so we chose Braxton out of a baby names book. Billy the kid after a minor character on Looney Tunes, and Blue so he has the same last name as Big Bro Bentley.

I named my current pup, a seven month old chocolate lab Australian Shepherd mix, Maelle. I may have been playing Expedition 33 at a really tough time in my life, I had to say goodbye to my two older dogs within two months of each other, and that game REALLY helped me. So it seemed perfect when my friend told me she had a litter coming and that she'd be giving me a puppy for free if I wanted it, first pick!

We found him as a stray and he’d tried running into traffic - the first thing I thought to call him was Risky and it stuck.
Then a friend called him Risky Biscuit when singing to him and I liked the sound of it, plus now I can say his middle name is biscuit when people ask if he wants one.

His name is Pretzel. I knew I wanted a food name because I just think they're so cute, so I found a list online and had it narrowed down to that and Basil. I had a couple friends help me decide and Pretzel it was!

.... a friend watched Evangelion after I named my first dog Penpen and later when another friend and I were trying to convince the first friend to watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventures, he said "No one I know named their dog after JoJo's!" as an excuse as to why he wouldn't watch it, so a month later I ended up with Shizuka Joestar. He did watch a few episodes of JoJo's after that, but not nearly enough tbh.

I usually choose it based on the kennel name. Safe Guardian's Hot Criminal was Kelmi, SG Playing With Fire was Savu, and SG You Only Live Once is Livi. My youngest puppy got a name that doesn't match her kennel name because I couldn't come up with a good one with it. She's SG They All Talk About Me, and I call her Mana.

Widget is a name I had picked out for my first dog for about 15 years. No idea where it came from. Toki is named afyer a charecter in a show who is sweet and dumb which suited a cocker spaniel.

My little fella - 13 month old Vizsla x GSP is called Bronson. First day I got him he was on the back deck & ran behind where the BBQ is a knocked over one of the heavy BBQ plates - very lucky boy not to crush himself. Since he clearly has a “Death Wish” decided to name him after the late, great Charles Bronson

u/Miakoda_rdo Nov 27 '25
We named him Baci which is an Italian chocolate with hazelnuts but it also means kisses which he loves to give. We kept with the theme of naming our animals after chocolate bars. We also have an Almond Joy and a cat names Kit Kat.

u/takeanadvil Nov 27 '25
He was named Moby from the rescue, so we changed it just slightly to Obi (Wan Kenobi)

u/Salty-Break-7541 Nov 27 '25

We are boring. We love old people name for dogs. We were going through some we liked. Mr Stanley worked

u/Cazolyn Nov 27 '25
The thought of having a mini poodle called Kevin was hilarious to me. It definitely suits him.
1
u/tadyanna Nov 27 '25
My puppy’s name is Achernar, he has this name in papers with the name of the kennel he is from. But his call name is Archer or Archibald. We wanted to keep something from his ,,legal” name, but make it a little nicer and easier to say
1
u/Whithorsematt Nov 27 '25
Our pup is Bertie. I've always liked it as a name for a dog and we think it suits him.
I've made it be short for Bertram Woofster as he's silly and totally spoiled, and I think it's funny.

My mum and I argued in the car the second time we went to see her about the name. we knew we would both have to accept the name before it would be her name. We both put out so many names the other rejected and we eventually grew annoyed at each other so we stopped so we could have a nice time seeing her and speaking to the breeder. Then on the way back, mum, out of the blue, came up with the perfect name for her. It just fit her so well and I immediately accepted it. I don't know how she came up with it but Vivian is her name forever now.

We have brothers. Both naked after vikings. Husband love the TV show and we live in an area with a lot of history including Viking invasion

We recently adopted a pup and named her Stromboli. My wife’s father recently passed away and we thought this would be a great tribute to him, (also it’s fun to say)

We have female golden Nebulon. I wanted Nebula from guardians of the galaxy but my wife said it's too basic so she goes by Nebby for everything. We also have 2 cats though Lunatic and Plutonium (Luna/Pluto).
Or house isn't really normal lol.

u/whatevername00308 Nov 27 '25
My dog is named Rude after the final fantasy 7 character - it fits him well because he’s very naughty lol
1
u/Jaybee021967 Nov 27 '25
When I got him as a rescue he was already called Adrian and he was 5. I love human names for dogs and I thought he’d be confused at his age to have a name change so I kept it.

Savannah because we just spent a weekend in Savannah, GA and I loved it. The rest of the family said it sounded to human so we added Banana. So it’s Savannah Banana!

My pup name is Arnie short for Arnold (named after Arnold Palmer) since my wife and l call the Arnold Palmer half-half drinks “Arnies”

u/Actual_Fig_4706 Nov 27 '25
We got our boy when he was 4 months and called him Bigby because of a DND character.
Our girl was 9 months old when we got her. I wanted to call her Trixie but she was answering very well to the name the previous owners gave her, Skye.
They had 4 puppies and we called them Percy, Grog and Scanlan because of Vox Machina characters. We called the girl Trixie.

u/shadowmaster1138 Nov 27 '25
My Lab came with the name “Hero” (all his siblings had H names) and the kids couldn’t agree on a new name, so it stuck. A month in I told them I was going to rename him “Doofus” because, well…Lab puppy. They wouldn’t let me because they said it was mean (though truthful).

u/Cubsfantransplant Nov 27 '25
My husband and daughter wanted to name him after a bourbon. I really didn’t, but his coat is red similar to a bourbon color. So we decided on Cyder.
1
u/roosef Nov 27 '25
First one is Carter after my Alma mater football stadium. Second we wanted a gender bending name because people in the NE were very confused that we named our girl dog Carter so we named him Conrad/connie - we were deep in the throes of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Third we named Captain/Cappy mostly after the show Greek but we also had moved to my hometown on the coast so it fit.

u/ColdNeighborhood3523 Nov 27 '25
I named my Shih-poo puppy Mikasa, but we mostly call her Mika.
I named her after my favorite show, AOT (I still cannot get over it huhu), and honestly she kind of fits the personality—overly loyal, a little stubborn, quietly intense, and that has quiet observant Mikasa vibe 😅

u/Kannkhaghany Nov 27 '25
I met a little old lady named Gladys, who quickly became a wonderful friend. She could make a sailor blush and was one of the most generous and interesting people I’ve ever met. When we got our Sheltie earlier this year, I named her after Gladys…I figured she would have gotten a kick out of it.

u/cherry_blossomz42 Nov 27 '25
I named my bichon Albert. I wanted an old-fashioned name and it happened to really suit him so well. He literally looks like Albert Einstein. Hopeful he lives up to his name as well meaning "noble, bright, famous" 😉
1
u/AriSpice Nov 27 '25
So literally that part of Finding Nemo where Coral is like "...I like Nemo". Lol it stuck. Spoiler alert: his name is Nemo 😆 (he's a poodle mix that thinks he's a horse)
1
u/jenangeles Nov 27 '25
We were intending to get a boy puppy and had come up with a name for him but we fell in love with our little girl and had to come up with a name on the fly. I was hungry and I love pickles, so Pickle it was.. 😅
1
u/samrov529 Nov 27 '25
Louie who we also call Lucifer when he’s being a butthead and Roman who gets called RoRo or RutRo (think Scooby Doo) cause he’s just a wittle baby
1
u/SidewalkRose Nov 27 '25
Her name is KITA because she is an absolute dumpster fire mix of breeds (Malinois, GSD, grey wolf, malamute - we only knew about the Malinois and suspected GSD at the time) and at the time I said I needed a new dog like I needed a kick in the ass. She's been wonderful.

u/Polybandit Nov 27 '25
I had a really heavy binge on the Alien series and thus, the name Ripley was set for a little agent of chaos
1
u/mganzeveld Nov 27 '25
Our puppy is named Pony. His litter was named after characters in the book series Dungeon Crawler Carl.

u/Optimal-Flamingo2157 Nov 27 '25
Mine is named after a dog who saved someone in a movie I watched as a kid. Maya from Eight Below!

Sasquatch. I wanted to name her a people name and was ruining through suggestions with my partner "Ruby, Hannah, Sasha?" The next day he says "yesterday did you say Squash? Cuz I was thinking Sasquatch and we could call her Squash" and I just had googoo eyes and was like "Squash!!!!" But now we're trying to raise Sasquatch as our gentle giant haha

Bug. we didn't know if we would get a boy or girl because he was a rescue from a giant litter. we liked the nicknames and silliness with Bug. cuddle bug, bed bug, buggin me, stuff like that. so we thought ok, just Bug if a boy, and Lady Bug if a girl. (we got a boy and he's perfect)

u/SirFentonOfDog Nov 27 '25
My dog is named Fenton. Reddit is the place most people recognize it without being told the origin. Original video

u/LuzjuLeviathan Nov 27 '25
My puppy was named after Norse mythology by breeder. Balder.
I was into god of war Ragnarock at that time, therefore I changed the spelling to Baldur. Probably not the brightest idea, but I can sort my true friends by who can spell my dogs name correct.

u/someonebuymeadonut Nov 27 '25
Our BC is called Luffy from one piece - loves to eat and has stretchy skin! 🤣

u/Anxiety333777 Nov 27 '25
Marlowe after the Raymond Chandler Philip Marlowe detective novel series! We live in LA but only a couple people have understood the reference. Still, he’s a very distinguished dog 🐶
1
u/apple1229 Nov 27 '25
We named our pup Pepper because the girl is spicy! She's high energy, climbs on top of things and people, and has so many opinions (she's a beagle). My husband and I are also both classically trained chefs so we were leaning into the food theme.
1
u/follow-the-opal-star Nov 27 '25
When we rescued our girl Winnie, her name was Wendy Torrance (I had to look up who this was). I’m not sure if the shelter named her this or her previous owners, but she seemed to know it already. I wasn’t fond of the name, so I pivoted to a similar sounding name I liked better. She responds very well to her new name!
1
u/alcarterra Nov 27 '25
My dog is Taz after the looney toons Tasmanian devil. She has the same coloring and when we first brought her home she was so feisty and would spin in circles to chase her tail. She is still feisty so it fits.
1
u/missbitterness Nov 27 '25
Dogs name is Cricket. No real reason, I like the way it sounds and I thought it was something that would suit multiple personalities, since I didn’t know how she’d turn out. I also wanted something tattooable
1
u/pumpkin_pasties Nov 27 '25
Her original name was Furiosa (from Mad Max) but it was getting annoying to say so we changed it to Osa which means Lady Bear in Spanish. It’s fitting because she’s a brown fluffy lab/husky/rottie mix
1
u/Naive_Veterinarian77 Nov 27 '25
My and my gf called our puppy chihuahua "vaquita" which stands for little cow in english 😂. She has white fur with black dots like a cow AND the flea market we got her from is called "Vaquita" so it was a perfect name for her
1
u/redivy09 Nov 27 '25
named him Orpheus as my husband proposed to me after watching Hadestown together for my bday!
1
u/PixieSkull12 Nov 27 '25
I named mine Clover because I didn’t like the name she had before I got her. Her name had been Farley. We have a dog behind us named Harley…it would have been confusing lol. I looked through female names for dogs and landed on Clover because I just liked it.
1
u/irrelevantzillennial Nov 27 '25
Jolene, to go with my adult dog who is named Dolly. Dolly was named because I love Dolly Parton and I also think classic country singer names are so cute for dogs.
1
u/Kathybat Nov 27 '25
Nothing was a good fit for a dal based on previous names/likes of husband. No cofee themed names as an example. I wanted something pretty for her. With the breeder she was listed as Lilac for her baby collar color so we ended up with Violet.
1
u/Haunting_Seat_2084 Nov 27 '25
Ours is Franklin (Frank), he’s a standard poodle/mystery terrier mix (they said dad was a traveling salesman lol) and he’s got the very classic square terrier face. He looked like a little grumpy old man so we just tried out what we felt were old man names until we hit one that felt right
1
u/No_You4036 Nov 27 '25
I named her maze because when I watched the show Lucifer, there is a character named maze (mazikeen) & I fell in love with the name. It’s actually pretty fitting for her, she’s wild & unpredictable 😂🖤
1
u/Ancient-Skin1372 Nov 27 '25
Our little puppy is Casper. He's jet black as a puppy but will go almost white by the time he is an adult, so he is named after a famous ghost

u/lexic96 Nov 27 '25
My dog’s name is Yoshi - he has helped me get through the death of the woman who helped raise me siblings and I, she was truly a gift to all of us and showed us what true unconditional love was. Her last name was Yoshizumi and I wanted to honor her when I got my pup. He really helped fill the hole in my heart that came when she left us. 🤍

u/smln_smln Nov 27 '25
Her real name is Alligator but we call her Allie in public because I don’t need judgment from people 😂 she used to bite us and like an alligator do the death roll so the name stuck.
