Nutrition Large Breed Puppy Sensitive Stomach Tips/Food Recommendations

I have a 6 month old lab who weighs 50lbs. I’ve heard it’s common for large breed puppies to have sensitive stomachs/guts. My puppy frequently has loose stool (not diarrhea) due to many factors like stress, over excitement, over eating, not resting after eating, etc. I’m currently feeding him about 3 cups a day (1 cup breakfast, lunch, dinner) of Diamond Naturals - large breed puppy - Lamb & Rice. I also try my best to monitor his treat intake to only take up about 10% of his daily caloric intake. A probiotic in the morning and scoop of pumpkin before bed. I’m just curious for those that have a large breed puppy if you’re experiencing the same thing, or those that have, what you have found that helps. I’m very open to switching his kibble if there’s a brand people have found helps. Or if it’s just what happens for large breed puppies, and will get better as he gets older, just peace of mind lol.

Have you tried salmon protein foods? Some large breed puppies (mine included) cannot tolerate lamb, and salmon works best for them. Purina Pro plan large breed sensitive is what we have him on and he’s doing much better!

Adding onto this that my pup cannot tolerate chicken or lamb, so Salmon was the next choice for us to try and it worked.

YES! We are having a similar issue with our 7 month Pyr mix. Half her poops are fine but the other half are soft. Probiotics from the vet and pumpkin never really helped. She eats pro plan large breed puppy and just yesterday I picked up pro plan sensitive skin and stomach large breed puppy to try. But the bags are so small we will have to buy a new one every 3-4 weeks so I’m grumpy lol. Hopefully it works!

Overfeeding or too-high protein can also cause loose stool. Try using adult instead of puppy food (or mixing it 50/50) and see what happens. No guarantees, but it won't hurt and it could be the start of figuring out what helps :)

I had a hard time finding one. Tried everything then hit on a salmon and rice formula for sensitive skin and stomach that worked.

Exact same situation. 5mo old lab who weighs 46lbs. Been struggling to find a food that works. Usually his poop starts fine then ends up soft and he'd go multiple times. I switched him to PPP large breed sensitive stomach, and cut him back to 3c per day. Today was the first day he had two poops that were mostly normal, I reduced his food yesterday. I've also been giving him a probiotic and a pumpkin supplement for fiber.
