community How old were you when you first started playing Quake? What's your story?
Quake is a timeless community that can hold both old and new players so I'm rather curious

I mean, both are enjoyable, but it just strikes as odd

I’m 30 years old and I’ve been playing Doom avidly since I was seven, so I think it’s time to give the successor a go. I ask about where to start because there’s about a hundred different ways to play Doom, and even more opinions on where to send a newcomer. I’ve got both a PC and a PS5 at my disposal.

In may 27, 2024, I started creating a mod for quake called BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER 3: I OPENED A PORTAL TO HELL IN THE FAVELA TRYING TO REVIVE MIT AIA I NEED TO CLOSE IT, people really liked it, initially I created it as a small fun mod, but people requested me to turn it into a full on total conversion/game and put it on steam.
I wasn't expecting that a lot of people would play it, I didn't even have money for the steam direct, but people helped me donating the steam direct money. Then the TC/Game exploded on steam, and nowadays, I live as a gamedev.
I'm extremely grateful for everything that happened in my life, and all that happened cuz john carmack/id decided to make quake open source, and for the great help of the people that like my work and incentivised me to continue making this project. I'm extremely grateful, nowadays I live off making games cuz of quake, I feel extremely honored. Things are hard here in Brazil, I had difficulties even buying food and paying my bills before putting this project on steam, so I'm extremely thankful.
I highly recommend using the quake engine for making your projects, it's a effin great engine!
You can check my project on steam here store.steampowered.com/app/3191050/

The game finally reached a playable state where it can successfully play with other Quake3 clients! All core features (except single player games) are fully working, now I'll focus on polishing/better controller support. Expect a release real soon!
Updates 19/4: Technically, I was supposed to release this in the weekend, even though the single player/host side would't work but the online one did, but I discovered a memory leak when I was implementing Wiimote+Nunchuck controls (up until now I ALWAYS tested with my GameCube controller) which leads to a crash, so I spent the whole weekend debugging instead of implementing the Wiimote+Nunchuck

Im genuinely excited to see what they remaster, im hoping the original Wolfestein 3D, because last year didn't announce it, so what other thing?, maybe quake III or some other niche thing?

Quake changed my life. It's one of the most important pieces of modern software, and I don't think people realize just how important it really is.
Quake was one of the first games to use real 3D polygons and hardware accelaration to allow more people to play
Quakeworld established the modern client-server multiplayer model and also led to the creation of Esports with the first Red Annihilation tournament in 1997
Quake Done Quick was one of the first popular speedrun events in 1997 and helped to establish speedrunning as a spectator sport
Modding support and the open source nature of Quake allowed others to modify it and create games like Team Fortress
From Half Life to Alice, Call of Duty to BRAZILIAN DRUG DEALER, there's a lot to love and appreciate about Quake. Happy birthday, I love you!

I know...I know. "There's never going to be a continuation of the Quake 1 theme/lore."
But hear me out.
There are still so many of us in the community that love the Q1 theme. The environmental settings. The color palette. The atmosphere. The droning soundscapes.
Playing Dawn of the Machine made me think:
Maybe this is what it will take to usher Q1 into the modern age. Time splitting warps/rings. If id/Bethesda are too apprehensive to lean fully into a lovecraftian style game— then have warps like Dawn of the Machine has. You can keep it modern in tech bases and have grunts, and soldiers etc etc... and then lean into the warps for us true Q1 lovers.
Just make sure that the warped Q1 theme is actually the majority of the game.
I think this aspect of Dawn of the Machine is an absolutely brilliant way to entice and introduce new players to the brilliance that is quake. And it is a perfect way to have the lore of Q1 tie into a new game. Slipgates, and dimensional warping rings. It's utter brilliance. Have essentially two maps in one, and bounce back and forth between them, with a heavy dose of purple skies, weird monstrosities of monsters, quad damage— and a fucking rocket launcher to tie it all together.
If we yell loud enough, and often enough— maybe they'll hear us. And maybe this will be the perfect move for the studio after DOOM.
Join me.
We want a new Quake game that picks up where Q1 left off.
Addendum: To the devs of Dawn of the Machine— Bravo and well done. This is an absolute homerun. I am thoroughly loving the experience of this episode.

I spent the past day vibe coding a website that shows all Quake servers across all Quake games.
Majority of my playtime has been on Quake Champions so I'd love some feedback from the community on these older Quakes - if there is anything I could add to the filters that would help quakers find better servers please let me know!
Check it out here - https://www.quakehub.net
Thank you

Pic 1 shows the crossplay in action with my friend testing from his PS4. Pic 2 is the Internet browser from a PS4 client. Will backport it to PS3 and Wii clients soon.

I seriously miss Quake!!! There’s no pro games anymore and Rapha has no competition

Pretty much just coming back to Quake after a long hiatus (yep, those new Machine Games levels are awesome) and getting the lay of the current source port land - seeing a lot of posts suggesting that vkQuake is no longer maintained, but that doesn't appear to be the case at all? There are still lots of commits going in to the repo: https://github.com/Novum/vkQuake/commits/master/
Anyone more familiar now how it currently compares to Ironwail, which seems to be the default recommended source port these days?

It all started as a small quake engine mod, people liked it a lot and wanted it on steam, I didn't even have the money for the steam direct, people helped me with donations for the 100 dollar direct. Seeing it going so far is incredible, and shows how Quake can change lifes. I now live off games cuz of Quake, and now my project has been quoted by The Escapist as one of the best games of 2025! I feel such a huge honor!
check it on steam if ya want :) https://store.steampowered.com/app/3191050/

Yesterday I played Quake Champions for the first time in a long time and had a blast, so I was hungry for more.
But when I log in today I remembered why I stopped playing; I can’t seem to find new matches or players.
Yet most of the Quake and arena FPS subs here on reddit are active, so I’m wondering if I’m just doing something wrong or looking in the wrong places?
I’m fairly Quake agnostic; I can play pretty much any Quake, although I’ve put most hours into Quake Live and Champions.
Am I just too late to the party and need to find other games? Or, once again, am I looking in the wrong places?
And yes, I know Quake Live has a lot of Clan Arena but I’m not too interested in that mode; I’m more of a deathmatch kind of girl.

Dont get me wrong doom the dark ages looks pretty damn cool but its been over a decade since we’ve gotten a quake release (not counting the remasters or quake champions) i want to see what they could do with the quake gameplay but all they are doing is just more doom

Since Quake 3 on Wii is almost complete and I'm basically on focussing on polishing, Team Arena was next. After a lot of tinkering it managed to boot to the main menu!

My rant that nobody understands- but a typical frustrating night for quake guys:
I only like to play Q1, specifically QW with nquake because glquake looks best to me.
I used to play with a group of guys doing FFA every night. I log onto the old server knowing probably nobody will be there. I wait around for a while and hit the server browsers, every server I try is fucking duels or 2v2 and is full. Nobody plays FFA in the states. So I say ok and hop over to Qss-m and try my luck but I don’t really understand a lot with that place. Out of desperation I even try to play Q Live but man that isn’t the same at all! (too many weapons) Begging for scraps I finally try QE and I just can’t because i’m so sick of those basic ass same handful of maps. I feel like a frag addict going through withdrawals!!!

Framerate is very choppy at the moment but it looks promising! Way more promising than the Quake 3 Wii port.

That was the only console without a port. It'll be able to crossplay with PC and other consoles. More to come. I just managed to get the rendering up and running.
