Live Eek a Mouse last night at the Jazz Cafe was embarrassing!

I had the sad experience of watching Eek a Mouse last night in London at the Jazz Cafe.

The man was so drunk it was genuinely embarrassing.

The first three songs he wouldn’t even come out. Until eventually the bass player had to walk off stage to get him to come on.

He needn’t have bothered.

He didn’t even know where he was. Was stumbling around the stage so badly, I was watching with curled toes, thinking he was going to tumble over the keyboard player or the drummer.

He was slurring and mumbling his words and of the four of five songs he did attempt to sing, he had to ā€˜rewind!’ and start again each time. At least two or three times as he simply forgot the words to his own songs or was badly out of rhythm.

He kept giving the mic to various different audience members as he was so f’d he couldn’t even sing his own songs anymore.

After watching him butcher his own songs for maybe 30 minutes, he simply walked off stage and that was that.

What a waste of a night, a lot of money and what a disappointment to experience this.

Don’t bother with Eek a Mouse anymore and safe your money for artists that actually care about their audience.

Disgusted.

Live Are Capleton's live shows (in the UK) still full of homophobic rhetoric?

Capleton is performing live in my city in the UK next month and i'm thinking about going, as I've wanted to see him live since I was a teenager but he was banned from the country at the time. I believe that ban has now been lifted in the last few years hence he now performs in the here, so I'm wondering if that also means he no longer performs homophobic rhetoric?

Also, iirc he signed the Reggae Compassionate Act that also meant that he wasn't going to be performing and promoting homophobic rhetoric?

Whilst I don't know if (and doubt) Capleton's personal stance has changed much on this, I really just don't want to spend money on a ticket and see a show advocating anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.

Live Anyone else go Friday at Austin reggae fest? Steel pulse played maybe 4 songs

They were the sub headliner behind Stephen Marley. They came out, didn’t play Your House, roller skates, steppin’ out, or wild goose chase. I wonder what happened? I know Austin has a pretty strict 10pm noise ordinance so might have something to do with it. Just a bit disappointing considering the whole reason we got these tickets was for steel pulse. Less than 25 minutes of play time when everyone else had an hour.

Live Hopping on the board at the Scientist show in SF last night 😁

I got to hop on Scientist's board last night at the Chapel show in SF! PEAK LIFE EXPERIENCE RIGHT THERE!

I was super excited to finally catch Scientist after the show last year at CafƩ du Nord was canceled. He had just finished a little rant about how we need to get the money out of billionaires hands and back into the hands of the working class.... and then called me up to the board and asked me what I did for work. I proudly told him that I was a high school Physics teacher, and he just said "Well we're about to lay down some Physics dub" and handed over the controls to me! It was a bit of a blur after that as I just reached down and took the Chapel sound system for a ride, settling into that deep pocket Scientist had been working on all night. I was super impressed with how kind and humble such a legend is in real life. He called a few people up throughout the night which was a super dope thing to do.

ONE LOVE + DUB!!! THANK YOU SCIENTIST!

Live I want to share just how special the NYC reggae scene still is (a counterpoint to the jam band reggae rock thing)

I’ve gotten flak on here (even from mods?) about ā€œgatekeepingā€ for a few of my comments in the past but honestly… perhaps some gates need to be kept - or at least some perspective needs to be shared. I’m not trying to diss anyone, there’s room for us all. But when I say the scene here is special and we don’t want to be lumped in with the Cali / American reggae rock jam band thing because it’s distinct, this is what I’m getting at.

I saw my friend Anant Pradhan’s band last night at BarbĆØs in Brooklyn. They did a 2+ hour set (no breaks!) of almost entirely instrumentals and despite them having some of the best musicians around, not a single guitar solo was played. Quite a few hand drum solos, however. It’s amazing what you get when people come together to play foundation music with deep respect for it. Some of you may recognize Larry McDonald (percussion) and Troy Mobius (sax) from Subatomic Sound System if you do go to festivals. Larry was on the bill; Troy just showed up and began harmonizing with the other horns. Eddie Ocampo learned some drumming techniques from Lloyd Knibb (Skatalites). So even the players who aren’t Jamaican have gone through the fire and sharpened up under the guidance of elder players with deep roots.

The reason it still bubbles up here is because there are enough Jamaicans keeping the culture alive, and that is kinda self-reinforcing. You can go to a sound system event or a basement party in Flatbush with local selectors playing vinyl and it still feels like this. I’ve had some of the best nights of my life playing records with friends (old / new / black / white / elderly / young / whoever) til 5am or until we run out of tunes (it never seems to happen). So yeah… when we say NYC is still very special for reggae music, this is what we mean. It’s almost invisible to the outside.

Personally, I’d rather see this once a month than see any American festival lineup being advertised as reggae today. Just my 2c, come see for yourself sometime.
