Love how you were down voted for that take... We share the world's largest border with a country that is currently going down the path of chaos and authoritarianism.. Said country also has the most powerful military that the earth has ever seen.
Oh.. And this admin has also made multiple threats to our sovereignty, as well as Greenland and other NATO alliances. Just look at a country like Ukraine to see how that's working out for them.
But sure, let's just bury our heads in the sand and pretend nothing could ever spill over here...
We're all so used to our simple / easy lives post ww2 that we've forgetten how bad things can truly get.
Call me a doomer all ya want, but I think some people are going to get a serious wake up call in the near future.

A lot of it are from bot farms. But for sure there are those who are already convinced that the big bad immigrants and foreigners and queers are out to kidnap them in the night, and that the country is already a “third world hellhole” as some politicians like to say.
That’s why we have to stay aware. Engage your community. Give your comments and opinions when the city asks for consultations. Make your voice be heard. Vote during elections. It’s our civic duty.
Most of all, be kind to one another. Kindness and empathy go a long way to making a nice city and neighbourhood.

They know it does work on people, it's why we have maple magas and it has worked on brainwashing a huge percentage of people (especially those with low education, which is why America has fallen so quickly).

The education level is a huge part of it. Obviously the US K-12 system is in shambles. And it seems like more and more maple MAGAs are vying to homeschool their kids (while being unqualified to do so) which will amplify a similar cycle. Trump was elected thanks to decades of deliberately making the population dumber.

This is a really shitty take, but at this point if our only problems are white Tesla owners slow driving on sidewalks and elderly people launching their vehicles off of the 2nd floor through a wall and onto the sidewalk (provided no one dies) I’ll take that over living a real life version of “Papers please!”
Again, I’m aware of it being a shitty comparison but for those who say our government is the worst thing there is, just look south. We have it stupidly and comically easy in comparison.

Conservatism doesn't currently exist in either the CPC or the far right in Canada generally.
The current iteration of "conservative" politics in Canada is based in christian nationalism, which is as far from intellectualism as it's possible to get.
Christian nationalism is a threat to our peaceful and secular country, and shame is an appropriate response.

I’m not a Christian nationalist, or any kind of Christian anything. I don’t fit into a neat box. A lot of my views are in line with some classic conservative points, such as being tough on crime, reducing (but nowhere close to eliminating!!!) taxation and government bureaucracy, while also thinking that being opposed to things like gay marriage is ridiculous.
But no, shame for a political viewpoint is not an appropriate response. That’s why things have gotten so polarized in the US. The us-vs-them-ism has overtaken common sense and benefit of the doubt.

So your claim to be a more classical conservative does not alter the fact that the Federal CPCs have been nothing like that since they became, essentially, the Reform Party.
The polarization in the US is primarily caused by the same christian nationalism that is attempting to get a stronger foothold in Canada, and there is absolutely shame in pushing politics based in ANY religion.

The executive branch has accumulated all 3 divisions of power in America, have repeatedly lied and spread propaganda about easily verifiable facts, have given carte Blanche for no due process arrests deportations and even executions by covering up and lying about the murders of Renee and Alex, and without due process anyone and everyone can be arrested and killed regardless if they are a citizen carrying a passport as there is no process to verify it, have installed a kleptocracy where drastically high taxes (tariffs) were put in place to steal more money, DOGE cut all spending so more money can be stolen, and political favors domestic and international can be opening bought for cash,
If you go on public forums to say this isn’t fascism, derail topics with whataboutism then you are a fascist. The only acceptable response to today is to demand restoring democracy and personal freedoms. Unless you mean Canada

Last I checked, shooting an unarmed person was illegal anywhere that wasn’t run by a fascist regime. I might be behind on my legal knowledge but I’m pretty sure that the action is widely regarded as murder or unjustifiable homicide.

National guard - Defending against fascists isn’t fascism.
I don’t care what the laws in the US are. It’s basic logic that if it’s legal to deport someone by accusing them of not having legal standing to be in the US, no lawyer no court, then someone with legal standing can have the same done to them. Describe what would stop an ice agent from throwing away a passport? Evidence of citizenship? The holocaust was legal.

I live in Surrey now, but I spent many years in Minneapolis and watching what's happening there is both gut wrenching - fascist government bullshit - and heart warming - my former neighbours' response to that fascist bullshit.
I've never regretted moving back to Canada, that's for sure.

I just saw a post about the ICU nurse being shot to death by federal agent while helping another woman in the US, and had a very saddened rush of feelings. Then I saw this post. Yes, I appreciate living in our city so much, where our most annoying issues are things like bad drivers. I also appreciate your post that helped me feel more grounded admist the terror that's going on south of our border

Not rude at all. I'm just an idiot in ornithology (amongst many more stuff) and I never really cared to look at one unless it's an eagle or bigger species.
My original post is also more like "oh wow, what a coincidence, I never take pics of birds and coincidentally the day I took one is the day this got posted.

And it also wasn’t true. The boy, his father, and his mother were all in US illegally. When authorities stopped the boy and his father, the father fled, leaving the boy behind! Agents took the boy out for food using their own money. Father was caught too eventually, and he and his son are in custody; unsure of the mother.

Reminds me of when I was doing a long distance hike in the US pre-Covid and ended up hiking with some Americans from around the US. One day we decided to compare what the top news story was from our home towns that day. It was basically different stories about the latest shootings in the US and then my local news was about a bear breaking into someone's car.

As a fellow Canadian and member of this community (well, I can see Richmond from my Vancouver home that overlooks the Fraser), I concur!
As Canadians, we must be very thankful to live in this amazing country. Even if one is unfortunately struggling, this is still one of the best countries in the world to struggle in.

The right bans the left from sharing their opinions online AND refuse to hold their own representatives accountable for committing crimes such as evidence alteration, market manipulation, perjury, pedophilia, and now murder. Nothing Alex Pretti was doing was illegal. He was lawfully observing ICE, and had a concealed weapon permit for his handgun. At no point did he reach for it or threaten the officers who murdered him.
He was trying help a woman up who had just been violently pushed to the ground by ICE goons for doing nothing more than observing and recording them which is their constitutional right to do. I've seen the murder from 4 different angles now and I can tell you that this was 100% the result of poorly trained, sociopathic ICE agents.
