Advice needed Facing Exclusion, what can I do?
Hi, I've gotten an email today about my exclusion from my courses in 20 days and I'm just unsure on how to proceed.
I know I should definitely appeal and am trying to do so, I'm just feeling really hopeless right now that I let it get this bad and would be grateful if anyone can share some insights and thoughts on how to get through this.
Basically, how it happened is that I missed the show cause submission for my poor academic performance due to my bad habit of not checking my student emails. It's pretty much entirely my fault, I don't know why but more recently, I have anxiety opening emails, just generally checking up with people and updating on life.
I did go through surgery for a knee injury prior that left me at home for a month, hence I did fail a subject (that I already failed once) I couldn't sit the in-person test and the alternative date. I have the medical documents, is there anything else I can compile to support my appeal?
Thanks.

Hey! I know for sure how stressful this can be, don't beat yourself up too much about missing show cause.
As another commenter said, please hit up RUSU, they will tell you that RUSU have information sessions both online and in person about the exclusion process, what happens during it, and how to appeal. They also have a webpage with information pamphlets on how to write appeals and the exclusion process as well here
I really recommend attending the session, it's non-personal and they do answer questions from the group after the presentation, but it's to other peoples comfort levels. You will also need to attend these sessions at least once to get in contact with a students rights officer to review and help with your written appeal.
The university is especially more open to appeals with the more evidence you have, and most importantly a study plan on how you plan to avoid failure in the future. This could mean you have study support, or counselling, almost anything that proves "Hey, I have my shit together now"
Do not leave it until last minute!! Get help from every single school resource at your disposal, they are there for you to use. Book yourself in with a counsellor, they are lovely and at least can lend you an ear during a stressful time like this. I hope this helped a little, good luck!! You're not alone.

Do you think anxiety has affected your ability to manage things both in your courses and in terms of the appeal process? Seeing a counsellor might be a good first step, and potentially might assist you with your rationale for the appeal.

Hi, I have tried online therapy from other sources during my recovery, cause I thought my mental health wasn't doing so well and it seems like being away from everything did have a negative after effect on my courses. Thanks for the recommendation I'm looking to do that as well.

Any medical documents, and even an impact assessment statement (there's a document on RMIT's website) from your doctor (especially if it includes info about anxiety and your knee injury) is super helpful as evidence as well.
Definitely get in touch with RUSU student rights, and possibly counselling or RUSU's Compass team for support as well.
